It’s happened to me and all my close guy friends, but only once each. Might be something about my city… a guy only gets a single one-night-stand per lifetime. I dunno.

I would say your prose most resembles Hemingway in its accessible construction! And I do see an element of romantic self-reflection/self-destruction characteristic to classic Russian literature! Roth and Updike aren’t prose artists in the same way that other writers are—their prose is good, but it’s more of the psychosexual subject matter that made me think you might have drawn inspiration from them. Based on you writing, you’d probably really like them, Phillip Roth especially! Portnoy’s Compla…

Nice, I’m always excited to read short fiction. This community has so much writing but so few writers; do you know what I mean? Am I correct in picking up on the subtext that the narrator is a repressed homosexual? I’d like to hear who your influences are—Roth, Updike?

The real answer is social conditioning that’s as old as time, but it’s really kicked up a notch in the contemporary era. Men are encouraged to (try to) sleep around because it’s an indicator of sexual skill/vitality and desirability. Speaking from experience: you’re at an advantage if you are happy with intermittent monogamy because buying into the social conditioning of hookup culture, like a lot of us here have, leads to a ton of frustration and insecurity if you don’t live up to the very high…

Damn, man. I wish I lived in a city where there were a ton of people always out. I live in a medium-sized city and the bars are usually packed on the weekends, but it’s a drag having to wait all week. Everything is also a lot slower in the winter, too. I honestly want to go spend a week in Vegas, not gamble a cent or buy a drink, and just approach approach approach all the time.

I used to be super resentful about it, but eventually you get to a point where you have to claim responsibility for yourself and your outlook. It’s important to understand where your beliefs toward sex and dating come from, but it’s also important to learn how to move on. I couldn’t do that until I went to therapy. I just highly recommend therapy to everybody. It’s worth it.

First, I’m not implying that you resent anybody, that was more addressed to the other people here making comments about women I think are questionable. Sorry if it came off accusatory. Second: the fact that this girl you texted ghosted you has nothing to do with you and what you said, nothing to do do with your friend and what she said, and everything to do with the girl. Your comment wasn’t too forward at all in my opinion, but the sad fact is that the world is just filled with flakes—male, fem…

Do you guys actually like women? If you’re sitting here thinking women give bad advice because they’re trying to sabotage you, you’re either friends with some pretty bad people, or you need to take a good look at yourself and your beliefs about the opposite sex. Yeah, I’ve gotten some pretty awful dating advice from the women in my life. But I don’t sit around resenting them for trying to ruin my life; they just don’t understand what it’s like having to be the pursuer in dating. Girls have funda…

Thanks for the tips! You’re for sure right about needing more experience. It’s hard for me to find opportunities outside of bars on weekends, but I’m keeping my eyes peeled. Interesting what you said about always pushing a set. At this point my game is so underdeveloped that if I get further than I ever have—like I did in this field report—I get caught by surprise and don’t know what to do. I guess I’ll just get more comfortable as time goes on, and part of that will be pushing every set as far …

Thanks, homie! I really believe that truly learning from experiences is the way to success in this game. I had a phase last year when I did a lot of cold approaches but never saw any success, and I’m realizing now that I wasn’t learning from my approaches, just throwing spaghetti and hoping something would stick. I’m not experienced or knowledgeable enough to be giving anybody advice, but if I had to I’d highly recommend doing what I’m doing, writing out field reports with analysis. Even if nobo…

Thanks for the feedback, man. I lost access to the OP account but it's still me. I love what you said about outcome independence and staying positive. My therapist tells me that if I stay in control of my thoughts it can have a huge impact on my emotions and behaviors and you're getting at the same thing. You're also right about pushing myself outside of my comfort zone. Last time I gave this whole game thing a try, I got really frustrated because of my lack of results--but now that time has pas…
