This is for the federal court system. Anybody know if there has ever been a similar study done in the state court system?

Two thoughts come to mind. The first is the eradication of male only environments. The socialization, camaraderie, empathy, competition, help, etc. that a man receives in these environments is like nothing else. I'm still friends, thirty years later, with male friends I made in the Navy. These kinds of friendships have no substitute and are extremely important for men. Inject just one female into one of these male-only environments and they change radically - some to the point that they are esse…

I think their target audience for this piece are normies that have never heard of men's rights. Of course there's the obligatory painting of MRA's as being far-right spaces for extremists. However, overall I think it was a pretty good and sympathetic perspective. Very surprised to hear this from the BBC. Give it a listen and tell me what you think.

I didn't read that as a plea or argument for the rights of men, only to recognize their worth and see them in a positive light. I would say that societies opinion of men has worsened in the past 20 years, and in spite of the few recent #MeToo corrections, I only see things getting worse. I think that changing how society views and values men is a necessary first step to regaining the legal rights we've lost. So, setting aside rights, what would you suggest as a way to improve the public image of…

I see your point, but at the same time: It's largely a positive message about men and not attacking women. How have our other strategies been working for us? So IMHO it's not the best, but I'm currently at a loss for anything better.

I think that depending on the study rates of depression between the genders are either equal, or that women suffer from depression more than men (source). IIRC in the Myth of Male Power there was a suggestion that male rates were probably much higher because women are more likely to seek help and support than men. I haven't researched this much, so if I've got some bad sources I'd love to see others.
/r/MensRights17/06/17 02:34 PM

My source was Susan Koman. In all honesty I really am OK with prioritizing younger people when it comes to health care. I also accept that women have a more critical role in reproduction, so I accept taking a back seat to women of reproductive age there as well. However, if both theoretical patients are approximately the same age, but one category (women) gets something like 3x the funding than the other (source), then I don't see the justification for that.

The average of prostate cancer diagnosis is 66, but the average age of breast cancer diagnosis is 62. So, unfortunately it's really not age, but good 'ol gender bias at work here.
/r/MensRights16/06/17 03:39 PM
2

It all comes down to your age and prognosis. If you're old (average age of diagnosis is 66) and at stage 1, then you're probably best advised to keep an eye on it: AKA "active surveillance". If you're younger with decades left to live then you will probably want to do something about it eventually. The surgery involves one night in the hospital, and then 1-2 weeks at home to recover.

It's a good article, but unfortunately for every one of these I probably read dozens decrying how hard women have it, and how horrible men are. I do wish it were different, but to me it still feels like things on the whole are still getting worse and not better.

I like Tommy a lot. I think his facts are inflated somewhat. Like, he says, "men die 10-15 years earlier", (it's really five) and also claims that before the Great Society fatherless in the black community was 7%, and now it's something like 75% (not quoting as I'm going from memory). Politifact rates that as false, and I think that Thomas Sowell said it was something like 20% to 74% (or thereabouts). All that aside, I still agree with most (or all) of his points, just that the numbers are a bit…

Are you just looking for part-time work? If not then maybe a daycare or better yet and after school program. My school ran one, and there was a young man there that the kids absolutely loved. He was young, and even had tatoo's. Unfortunately, we're still a long way away from society trusting men alone with their children like they do with women.
/r/MensRights09/04/17 05:41 AM

I am now convinced that they fully understand and are mostly not complaining about equal pay for equal work (yes some talk about that). What they really want is for women to make as much (they'd be OK with more) money as men regardless of their chosen profession. On NPR I heard somebody being interviewed complaining that "society just doesn't value women's work as much as men's". I believe there are plenty that would love to pass laws mandating equal pay - basically communism.

It wasn't a horrible article IMO. It's been a long time since I was dating, but I still have a hard time believing that men (ignoring the college years) are really in the drivers seat. Am I just out of touch?

That was a fantastic article. One change I would make would be at the beginning of section 4 "Solutions". Nothing's going to happen until people actually realize and understand that this is a problem. The amount of unconscious and willful blindness to this looming problem still astounds me. That The Myth of Male Power is 24 years old now, and The War Against Boys is 21 years old, but still we have Obama repeating the wage gap myth just leaves me flabbergasted. While at the same time AI will be powering self-driving vehicles. 3% of the US workers are drivers, nearly all of them are men. In some states 15% of the men earn a living as drivers. That's only one small category of work that will be replaced by AI. The suicide rate of men once they lose their jobs goes up dramatically (I think 2x). I really don't think that AI will a net positive impact on male suicide.

I believe I recall reading in the Myth of Male Power, that this is a true statement. That children with single mothers are 100x more likely than those living with married parents to experience sexual abuse. Also, that the cause is from the new men (boyfriends, etc.) in the family. Good question, and I really don't have a completely fixed idea on this. I certainly don't want to start restricting people from doing things like in your example above - so you and I may be pretty close to having the same opinion on this. However, on the other hand, if you're helping one group that is already advantaged then is that the moral equivalent to hurting the other group that is not advantaged? What if you were a white man, and used your millions to fund getting more white people into finance? Sounds pretty bigoted now huh? I commend your observations - I'm way older than you and was quite blind to this for many years. Not disagreeing with a single thing you're saying, but would like to point out that the problems men face in "other cultures and other parts of the world" may be no better than their female counterparts. If that is the case, then only addressing the women's issues in those cultures would breed the same inequity we see today in the west.

I don't disagree with anything you say, and I think we can all imagine suffering the hardship of being disabled. I'm just confused as to what is a "human right", vs. a standard "legal right", "parental right", "student right", etc. Human rights are those rights that we all have, merely because we're human - so I think it'd be a somewhat small list. But - it's a growing list it seems. Pretty soon, it will be a human right, if it isn't already, to be called by your preferred gender pronouns. Is it…

Not sure I buy all that either. India has many many women working - many in high tech - and India has arranged marriages. I was going to ask about the audience sizes - because I can really only think of female tennis players, and barely any men. I think that the pay should be proportional to the audience size (and therefore the revenue) and had women had an equal sized audience then I'd have no problem with it. However... According to Wimbleton's facts and figures page: The Ladies’ Singles Final drew a peak audience of 4.3m viewers, up on 2013’s 3.1m and down -0.9m on 2013. The Gentlemen's Singles Final drew a peak…

I don't know how Brainwatch analysis text, but I'm guessing it's with standard natural language processing algorithms, I think that in the next few years we will start seeing deeper analysis of social media, news, etc. This shallow analysis will also pick up phrases like "he called me a slut" and "she's not a slut". Those numbers may be a small percentage, but today it takes humans to correctly categorize those statements. Soon computers will do that work. I can't wait to see the results!

I posted this here because I know that more boys than girls raise their hands - and are called on. I don't have any data on the truly shy/introverted boys and girls, and the percentage that are boys, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the majority are girls. I'd love to know one way or another. However, if my guess is correct then I can imagine this new teaching style, allowing kids to submit their feedback via drawing/writing, to even further "sour" boys on school.

I don't want that either, and I agree with your points. I only selected that because it was an example of a zero-sum issue. I think another nearly zero-sum issue are resources (money) for domestic violence shelters. If we convince the government that there are men in need, the money needs to come from somewhere. Sure, the government might raise taxes, but in all reality the money would be deducted from elsewhere to fund those shelters. Both of these (and many other) issues are debatable. I only …

Aren't some things zero-sum? Like if a woman wants to have a child and the man does not. I'm not talking about being responsible for that child, I'm talking about actually having it? If you accommodate the man's decision then you infringe on the woman's right don't you? This is an honest question - I'm not just trying to stir the pot.

Oh give me a break. Facebook was founded in 2004, she joined in 2008, they IPO'd in 2012, and it's now 2016. She's been there working for 8 of FB's 12 years of existence where they have scaled amazingly well and become quite profitable during her tenure. I haven't read a single thing online to lead me to believe that she is doing a bad job and only there to fill their supposed "woman quota". I really despise the current trend that thinks it can "fix" boys by teaching them to express their feelings. The sooner they learn that nobody, especially women, gives a shit about how they feel the better. Girls and women (and let's be honest boys and men too) are disgusted by weak men. Teaching them to expose their vulnerabilities will only make them victims.

I think that teaching boys to show their emotions will do more harm to the boys than good. Women are still hypergamous and prefer stoic men. I think the goal would be to find a movie that some others would use as evidence of a patriarchy, and to reinterpret that through a "meninist" lense. And the people who lose the most? The children, who nearly always become detached from the half of their family on their father's side. I wonder about this. Sure the kids are most certainly losers, but the men lose their entire family, and it's usually not their choice. To add insult to injury they are required to subsidize their wife's new life. This is probably why men are 9.7 times as likely to commit suicide post divorce than women. I think the biggest losers are the fathers.

It's a long pipeline that really starts at birth - at least the non-biological part. The end of the pipeline is basically college - and then comes the job. As long as this is a company decision then I'm more-or-less OK with this. Let's say that worse case each woman takes one day per month. So that's 77% of her employees working 5% less per month - basically a loss of 3.9% of her employee work hours - but not a drop in expenses. She probably thought to herself, "they're going to mess with my reproductive rights, so I'll mess with theirs". It struck me odd that that didn't seem in any related to what I consider Title IX to cover. Just got me thinking...

I'm a little surprised you're getting downvoted too. I wouldn't go so far as to say "this isn't one of them", but with 2,125 cases in the US last year vs. 177,489 for prostate, 8,000 for testicular, and 62,000 for bladder, it's a relatively small number. If you then factor in all other causes of deaths, it becomes even less significant. And if you then factor in the other (non-death) men's issues, like equality before the law, child custody, domestic violence, homelessness, etc. it goes way way …

I don't think there's a perfect or easy answer to that. I think that some might say that a prenup, or some kind of contract should cover that. I personally don't think that a parent needs to spend years home with a toddler. Most neighborhoods have two working parents now, and are empty during the day. My wife stayed home with our kids all the way until they were in school. After that she went back to school for a teaching certificate, and only started working full time last year, when the kids w…

Mark my words. This is the start [of the end] of the concept of alimony as a thing. Now that women will be required to pay, it will be deemed unfair. Why do those men deserve a portion of their wife's future income? One-by-one states will begin to roll back, or even eliminate alimony altogether. It'll take a decode or two, but it will happen. Edit: +"of the end"

I haven't thought much about the morality of the draft. An all volunteer force tends to prey on the lower income groups - sort of how a lottery does. Just a thought experiment here, but what if we did away with the voluntary force, and made it draft only? This way we, as a society, might be less inclined to go to war if we knew that our sons and daughters wouldn't be insulated from war if they simply didn't volunteer. Sure, this won't work because we do need career soldiers.

I'm actually OK with somebody thinking the draft is shit, or not wanting to fight in a war. It's only when they think that one group should be exempt that I criticize their opinion.

I don't know what the current punishment's are, but I suspect that they were applied much more severely to male teachers than to female teachers. My guess is that our children would be better served by making the law "gender blind".

I haven't read a study or scholarly article about this, nor do I know that the problem of friendless men is actually worse now than it was in the near past (say in the 60's and 70's). However, I strongly suspect that it is worse - much worse. Here's my working theory: Men really can't bond at work anymore like they used to. Fantastic question - and one that I'd love to learn more about. My perspective here in the US is that our gynocentric media cherry picks the most horrible stories about things that men do to women, while at the same time completely ignoring the expectations that those societies (and the women within) impose on men. At the same time, they completely ignore any benefits that those women have as a result of how those societies work. For example, we hear a friggin' crapload about how Saudi women are…

I think you are 100% correct. Blindly believing what we are told about the past, and the present, makes us vulnerable to manipulation. Also, agree on the "two wrongs don't make a right point", but even then you might be saying to a girl that punched the boy that punched her that "two wrongs don't make a right". But even then the original offender, the boy, was the one being hit back. In this case today's men are being punished for the supposed offences of our ancestors. That's even less right.

Also, on #1 "women face shorter sentences for the same crimes". I'd make a few points. 1) same crime and criminal history. Also, consider the entire pipeline: 1) likelihood of arrest, 2) likelihood of charges, 3) likelihood of deferral (like, "testify against your boyfriend and we'll suspend your sentence"), and likelihood of sentence. I think that if you add it all up it accounts for a huge bias - something like 5x - but check my stats please.

Dr. Farrell talks about this in The Myth of Male Power (IIRC). It is true that women do more housework, but also provided a few facts. If you add up housework + non-housework then women work 58 hrs./week and men work 61 hrs./week. Both genders overestimate their work hours, but women overestimate more than men - I believe by two hours. Finally, men just aren't as into a tidy house as women, single men spend as much time cleaning their house as married men. It was an interesting perspective on th…

I agree with this (and initial) reply. I've been toying with writing a blog post attempting to argue that the wage gap is actually (somewhat) proof of female privilege. Yes, this will be interesting to dig into. I think it's wrong to expect 50/50 balance unless you feel the sides deserve 50/50 treatment. For example, I would not expect (nor want) a 50/50 balance between flat earthers and spherical earthers. But to see 89 stories about breast cancer and only 28 stories about prostate cancer seems hard to rationalize. Prostate cancer deaths are 66% as numerous as breast cancer, so to have equal treatment we should see 59 stories about prostate cancer instead of 2…

I totally agree - I can't really blame women (and men) for believing these lies when that's all they hear. I believed it too, and lived my entire life feeling guilty for it. This kind of affirmative action in hiring does nobody any favors, and is dangerous. Some other better qualified candidate (of either gender) was not hired, she's injured, she (her team and the public) have a greater risk of death or injury on the job, and now she's getting some very unfriendly press. Nobody wins. Just set a physical standard and grade candidates fairly.

Thanks for this post. I've been searching for a book to provide a historical view on gender roles. Katherine was great in the interview too. I'd make a comment on the interviewer, but frankly the YouTube comments say it all.

I haven't seen it, but offhand I'm with the OP as well. In your description I don't see them fighting for men. Their men are already dead - beyond help. Retrieving their bodies is for somebody else. If they were tirelessly fighting for improved safety regulations for other men still working as miners then maybe.

Shame. The achievement gap between girls and boys of color is even greater than white's. They are already 2x more likely to attend college then their male peers. I wish the world was perfect and we had enough money to help everybody, but it's not, and we should be helping the most needy: minority boys.

I'm actually OK with this story. The author states: The data tell a similar story for young men. Last year 42.8% of men lived at home—higher than women, but not at its 1940 peak, when 47.5% of them lived at home. Women were just the first to return back over that 1940 threshold - men aren't yet there. At least that was my take away.

I agree. One fact I picked up from The WAR AGAINST BOYS is that they thrive on competition, but girls do not - just the opposite. So I can see having a boys STEM night with qualities that would help one sex and hurt another justifying a legitimate reason to cater to a single gender.

I didn't interpret this as white supremacist, but that's a hard issue to touch without being misinterpreted. I think the poster might have been referring to the fact that 84% of the military being male and 69% (both genders) being white (source). I'm not that exacting about strict proportionality, but have to admit that when the 6,000 convicts were recently released from prison early and the news had a picture of a woman when 90% (or thereabouts) of prisoners are men I was a little miffed. So I …

I was glad to see her actions publicized and roundly condemned. However, it really saddens me that when something like this happens the whole Internet goes crazy and seemingly the whole world wants her to lose her job. I felt the same way when Brendan Eich was forced to resign as Mozilla's CEO because he was against gay rights. Do I disagree with him? Yes. Do I want him fired just because he doesn't believe people of the same gender should be married? No. I kinda wonder if, after the very public…

Here's a link to a study showing that feminists do not think any less of men than female non-feminists. No idea if this is a good study, but thought I'd throw this out there. The sad news is that everyone thinks less of men than women.

I didn't find that study, but was curious what the woman's rate did during that time period. I did come across a report from Samaritans that shows overall (all ages) men's rates basically flat, but women's rates cutting in half from '83 to '13. Also, for Northern Ireland women's rates were flat while men's rates (again overall) doubled. I found not a single group/region where the gap between men and women narrowed.

If I'm not mistaken I believe Christina Hoff Sommers said something to this effect, "feminism isn't gone - it's everywhere - it's in the air". Based on my experiences I'd have to agree. Not all women in my family label themselves as feminists, but 100% of them agree with a whole lot of the feminist platform.

According to The Myth of Male Power from age 15-19 men are 4x more likely, but from 20-24 it goes up to 6x. That's the population at large, not the subset that go to college - this paper should have the answer: Variability in College Student Suicide. So the she may be ignoring even more than 80%.

Circumcision and female genital mutilatio (Wikipedia link) are both mutilation, but in all honesty what happens to women can be much worse than what happens to men. I don't know the numbers, but reading that Wikipedia article really made me cringe and was tough to get through. To be honest I am very much for mens rights, but I am more against female genital mutilation (because it's worse) than I am against men's circumcision.

So speaking personally I absolutely love children, and think I'd enjoy being a teacher. (note: have 2 kids and wife is a teacher). I have to be honest and say that the money would be my #1 reason for not teaching. But then again, I feel the need to support my family and do not have the freedom to change to a more rewarding and enriching profession. That being said, if money were no longer an issue, then my very real fear of a false accusation and being sent to prison would almost surely keep me …

This is so depressing. Yet another "scientific" survey. For those of you not yet married you have a 100% chance of an "unwanted sexual contact" from your spouse at some point. Is it time to start (sorry continue) to legislate sex in marriage? I've been saving my son's entire life to send him to college. The past few months have really started me wondering if I'm doing the right thing here.
