You are correct. Once I make it clear I am unavailable, or at least not interested in dating them, the vast majority of them vanish into the ether. If I try to be friends, or show interest that isn't sexual or romantic, they sometimes seem baffled and confused. That's okay, though. It is still a "no one gets hurt" situation.
