My experience as a student and as an educator is that if there are boys or men that are reaching the same levels as the girls or women, they will get better grades, better opportunities, and more attention in general. Networking events are a nightmare as a woman. Professorships keep going to men even in the humanities. I believe education in general is not well designed because we are all different regardless of gender and any other qualifier. I struggled a lot throughout middle and high school.…

I used to smoke and before a date I would make sure to brush my teeth very well and use mouth wash and get some chewing gum too just in case… And they don’t even shower. It’s insane.

I once dated a former coworker. He waited until we weren’t in the same company because he thought it was unethical. I don’t know. Maybe he’s an idiot, or maybe he has strong morals. Just throwing my two cents.

I’ve been interrogating men about this since I was a teenager (and they were boys, yes haha), because of my own upbringing. When I was 15 and I decided ai wanted to be a mom one day, I thought it was probably better to be a single mother because men are never good dads (based in my own experience), but now despite all odds I’m willing to believe there is someone good out there. So let’s keep vetting! PS: if you feel your guy doesn’t have your back, he won’t have your children’s either. Not in th…

Alright, I’ll give you my list, in no particular order: Highly educated, postgrad minimum. PhD desirable. High emotional intelligence. Interest in the arts, especially poetry and painting. Capable of conversing about these. No nonsense about sciences being better than humanities, that always reeks of misogyny. Bilingual. At least a bit travelled, has curiosity about cultures other than his own. Leftist. Atheist/agnostic. Taller than me (I’m 5’3). Fit and healthy. I want him to live longer than m…

My grandmother, after whom I was named, passed away last Sunday. Because of Covid I haven’t been able to go back to my country in a long time, nor was I able to get on a plane when I got the news that she was found unconscious. All of the women who raised me are now dead. My grandma was the first woman I knew to dump her husband. She was independent and fearless. Travelled by herself, had friends, really cared about her health and appearance in a very cute way. She was very stubborn and almost a…

I smack them on the chest or arm or whatever if they do this to me. I grab them. I tell them I’m small and a slow walker and they must adjust to my pace. And if a man doesn’t want to commit to me because he can sleep around... I don’t want him on the first place. Cheating has always happened, too. I personally want to be free and meet a partner who is also free, so we can freely choose each other every day.

I honestly just want to be able to do as I wish without being judged. If I want abstinence, great, if I wanna fool around, great, if I’m seeking to commit, great—but I’m also 100% honest about what I want and fully aware of the consequences and risks. Some relationships are not meant to last nor to become serious, it’s a journey of discovery that goes inwards and outwards. And eventually, when I’m ready and they are ready, one relationship will hopefully last forever.

I don’t know other women, but besides the getting ready and other stuff, I think dealing with their bullshit and giving them a pleasant experience even if they are assholes (meaning I’m a nice person to be around, not rude or anything, unlike a lot of them) at least until I leave IS EFFORT.

As someone who is capable of having sex and give it the importance of having coffee, I’ll weigh in by saying that this (meaningless sex) only works, in my personal experience, when the person in question is not ready for a relationship. So if your partner is fucking around, he ain’t ready to be with you, or anyone else for that matter. He might not feel anything for them and not give those hook ups any importance, but he sure as hell isn’t valuing you either. Feelings are complex, so it’s possib…

I’m a poet, and an expert in Japanese art and literature, who speaks Japanese and reads classical Japanese, and who has written an article about haiku. Well, this man, knowing what I do, told me that he had written a haiku and then proceeded to explain what a haiku is to me. As we were sitting by my bookshelf full of books about Japan. You can visit their website and try the chat if you need to talk to someone. If not, there are other resources available in Australia, such as CASA. I’m not familiar with them so I can’t recommend anything personally; I’d try to find reviews or comments from survivors who have talked to them before contacting, and looking at their website thoroughly. In any case, I hope you’re okay and I wish I could be more helpful to you.

American men never stop to tell me how much they love my voice and accent, and how exotic it is; sometimes they even comment on my English proficiency (ten years living in English-speaking countries, but especially knowing that I am a PhD student in the US at a highly prestigious institution (my profiles normally say it or it comes up in convos quite fast) apparently isn’t enough of a clue for them in terms of language proficiency). Ugh.

I didn’t have the problem she is describing but I was in the same situation with a partner when I was 18 (you guessed it, he was 26). It didn’t register for me that it was rape—although I always knew I didn’t want it—until this year. I’m 34 years old. Reading this post has been quite triggering. Sexual assault is an incredibly complex thing to process, and I can’t recommend enough to contact RAINN if you are in a similar situation and need to talk to someone (they even have a chat if you don’t w…

I think it makes sense that it happened when you were doing better than ever! We lower our guards when we are doing fantastically. But now you can be aware of that, and you are reminding us too of this. It’s just human behavior. I think writing yourself a letter is beautiful. You can also do affirmations. Treat yourself to something nice as a sign of self love.

Don’t beat yourself up about it, just make a not about it and remember it in the future. We’re not robots. I have done a lot of casual sex as a coping mechanism, to have control over the situation after having been sexually assaulted by my partner in a serious relationship several times when I was 18-21. Now that I’m appropriately processing my trauma and listening to my body I have no interest in literally letting them enter it. Even though i have a really high libido—I’ll take care of myself, thank you very much.

After using OLD, I’ve noticed that for me a man’s voice is really important. The voice, the way he carries himself, the gesticulation, whether they maintain eye contact or not... There is also a certain something in their eyes, a certain light, that attracts me. Then, an energy that matches mine. Does the way he dresses please you? (Because you’re not here to teach him how to dress, or keep basic hygiene. They should know how already). That’s the physical stuff. And it’s perfectly normal if your…

How are y’all disrupting the patriarchy this week? Let’s inspire each other :D I’ve decided to gift myself a diamond ring when I finish my PhD exams in a month. It will probably be small because I don’t have much money, but I’m excited. I’m also thinking of honoring my mother by going to the beach and tell the ocean about my accomplishment (her ashes were spread in a river, so she is one with the ocean now). Absolutely. And don’t you think that focus on the wedding itself is a really strange thing? Why put so much emphasis on one day? Why is that the “Happy Ending”? This is why “Up” made us all tear up with a ten-minute story, and what most films and shows don’t really care to depict: how human relationships really work.

He literally has nothing to offer except your reflected brilliance. He has nothing going for him in his life except that you briefly deigned to spend time on him, and he got to talk about it to his friends and girlfriends. He thinks if someone as radiant as you saw something in him and he turned you down but you stayed around, there must be something special about him. But the only special thing about him was you.

The male centric aspect might be related to how it is focusing on Harvard graduates and it is a study that apparently started 75 years ago. Women’s presence at the University was scarce during a large part of the 20th century, making the possible case studies male, and the scientists in charge also probably men (haven’t really checked beyond reading the main page of the study’s website). I follow the “how they treat you has nothing to do with you, but with how they see themselves.” If treatment is anything but great, that scrote ain’t ready for this queen, and it shows absolutely nothing about me.

A €700 return flight to come see me in Japan. He broke up with me on my birthday two years later.

I’m in my mid-30s, and I was obsessed with finding a boyfriend early enough so they would move with me to another country for my mandatory research abroad period next year. Now I’m just getting into uprooting-my-life mode again (haven’t been in the same place for longer than 3 years in the last decade) and wondering what amazing shit I’m gonna do in Tokyo for one to two years. Fuck them fuckbois.

I just want to shout back at her: OKAY!!!!!, like a warrior responding to the general in the middle of battle prep.

Funny you say that. When asked for dealbreakers, I mention I’m not interested in getting absorbed by anyone’s family. My mother is dead and I have no interest in meeting someone else’s or in dealing with their fuckups.

And they still might not leave. My mom had to kick my dad out because he “couldn’t choose” between her and his mistress. And I distinctively remember hearing them having sex even after that. So there you go.

Today I went on a date to a very nice cafe (one of the few places with dine-in in the area, very yummy food). He arrived before me and texted me to let me know he was sitting inside. He stood up when I approached the table (and he was visibly paying attention to see me arrive) and asked me where I wanted to sit. Moved the table a bit so I could reach the couch area I liked. He was respectful, had good conversation, didn’t interrupt me. We had to look at the menu on our phones; he loaded it and i…

Hey, thanks for your post. I feel the same way, too, so tired of everything. I feel I’m such a weirdo for wanting things that seem common sense to me, to the point of thinking maybe they’re not common sense at all. I have much self-love, I journal, I take myself on dates and buy myself flowers, I’m an artist and a writer with friends and a rich inner life, but I still want a partner. I keep trying, but I’m intimidating or whatever (answer varies, but me being a smart woman is often an issue), an…
