Nice little zinger at the end: The mother has also been ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment because of concern she may have a "delusional belief system or some other mental-health issue." To date, she has refused to comply on the grounds she can't find a psychiatrist willing to work with her. Emphasis mine.

I'm still laughing. Seriously, check this, right. Macquire writes, Maybe there was a party at the Sydney Morning Herald last night and after seven schooners the leader writer remembered they hadn’t filed and had to pull something out of their arse. ... and then she publishes some bullet points. I- sorry, I just honestly can't stop laughing at this. What a half-arsed article! Posts half-arsed non-rebuttal

I don't have a source on hand - I believe it came from an article over at Feminist Critics - but I read there was some fudging on numbers of the "girls attempt suicide more" thing. Statistics relating to self-harm were classified as "suicide attempts", thus inflating the number, iirc.

Re-read my original comment, sympathy was expressed, you're just resorting to lies now. I have removed the part of the post which directly compared his case to other examples, it was immature and rhetorically flawed. You misread me. I wasn't questioning that you expressed sympathy, but rather that you did not address the issue of how authorities would respond to his attack. The impression the article gives is that the alleged victim was in shock. At this stage, there's not really enough information to make that kind of judgement. I hope the alleged victim is given the support she needs, and Johnson is given the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise.

I am not required to prove, it is the consensus (every report i have ever seen dealing with this subject makes the distinction). I'm not sure whether to classify this as an appeal to authority or an appeal to belief, but it's still wrong. That a large number of people agree with something doesn't make it true. That people in a position of authority - be it legal or academic - agree with something doesn't make it true. You came into this thread stating that rape by envelopment isn't rape because …

I read the first few chapters a while back, and I was incredibly impressed. Even if you reject the lengths to which Vilar takes her theory - and I did, at times - it's fascinating in that applies the same kind of rhetorical style as many feminist works from that period. The same social dynamics that Dworkin, Daly, MacKinnon et al. spun into the unilateral oppression of women are just as easily presented by Vilar as unilaterally oppressing men, and based on the sample I read, the book appears wor…

You're moving the goalposts again. First you claim a qualitative difference between rape by penetration and rape by envelopment is being forced to penetrate truly as psychologically damaging as being forcibly penetrated? with nothing to back it up. thankyou for dripping your well thought-out, politely worded mind sweat onto my screen. You are most welcome. It was not "my" definition of rape per se, it was the report's. And the US law. And Australian law. And U.K law. This is a blatant example of an appeal to authority. By this logic, no spousal rape occurred before the creation of spousal rape statutes. As laws regarding sexual and domestic violence were typically created with the sole intention of protecting women, during a time when male…

You are aware that sex negative feminism is a thing, right? That, in fact, sex positive feminism is the new kid on the block? Because I really don't understand what gives you the right to kick out the last two-and-a-half waves of feminism, just because you imagine that feminism is nicer than that.

At no point do I say women have it worse O rly? The report used by typhonblue in this thread defines rape to only include instances of the victim being forcibly penetrated, which [...] surely seems like a more abusive, violent invasion of personal power does it not? From that same report, it states that 1 in 5 women in the US have experienced this form of rape, whereas only 1 in 71 males have, with over a quarter of those occurring before the age of ten. I don't think that most young men are consciously aware of the risks involved, but subconsciously? Could be. Feminism has a bit of a problem with appropriation, however, whether it's the suffering of gay men via "femmephobia" or telling non-feminists that hey, you must be a feminist, because you believe in equality. Whether you intent offence or not, whether you meant to draw parallels to gender feminism, it's disrespectful to claim GWW for a movement that she herself disavows, NAFALT or not.

First, I saw this was by Hymowitz and set my expectations very low. To my immense surprise, she surpassed them by actually criticising women's behaviour. Bravo, Kay. Maybe there's hope for you yet. Of course, she swings wide on a number of points. For one, she sees no contradiction in both describing women's behaviour as being unequal and exploitative, but also describing men's reactions to the behaviour as "immaturity, as my own book seems to suggest ... [or] just good, old-fashioned misogyny".…

That is some ass-backwards logic right there. Questioning the reinforcement of a role which kills men (and almost only men) is not the same as calling for women to die. This is the same kind of "thinking" which sees drops in male workplace fatalities depicted as "more women are dying at work". Or should I instead be focusing on how these women are the real victims, because they have to live with the guilt?

I have no source whatsoever, but I've been told that men and women are sensitive to different kinds of pain. So while a woman might have greater resistance to lower back pain, she would have less resistance to pain from a broken rib, and so on. The last thing men need right now are more criteria for what makes us MEN and NOT MEN, and I'm glad the author avoids falling into this trap. Where this article seems to fall short, however, is when it regards the problems with masculine roles to gynocentric equivalence. This seems to stem from a fundamental misunderstanding of what being a man is like: as annoying as the dating contradictions men face on account of gender roles are, they really pale beside the use of shame to compel men into sa…

Breivik was an antifeminist, not an MRA; additionally, anti-feminist sentiments made up ~2% of his manifesto, with focused primarily on anti-multiculturalist and pro-Christian ideology. Ball harmed only himself and Berge, from what I've gathered, has not himself committed a violent crime. I'm not for one second suggested that the MRM is free from big-mouthed, trigger-happy individuals who call for bloodshed. I just don't think it's the case Assuming my reading of Elam the article is correct, that's entirely beside your point of him "inciting violence". Your logic is based on entirely different premises. In his case, the violence will not be originating from the MRM, so it's not the MRM's responsibility to stop it - a fact compounded by the MRM's struggle to alleviate contributory conditions. To return to typhonblue's mobster metaphor, you're assuming we know the mobster, Elam Fidelbogen assumes we d…

Except the dam is being blown by MRAs. If violence erupted, it would erupt from within the MRM. I feel like you're making a false equivalence between MRAs and marginalised men. I read it as Elam stating that marginalised men are likely to act violently if present conditions continue, not necessarily MRAs. For the most part, I personally see the MRM as helping to defuse potential violence by giving those men a place to blow off steam and a community genuinely empathetic to their experiences.

I don't have the study on hand and I'm off to bed shortly, I've seen it floating around so hopefully someone else can provide. IIRC, women were shown to be the primary perpetrators of every form of child abuse sans sexual abuse - in the case of neglect, by a significant margin. The single highest demographic for child abuse was single mothers.

Right, so as you see it, "Everyone knows that rape is a factor of prison" and you seem to view that knowledge as a form of deterrant. Even though you support progressive rehabilitative measures, you don't see prison rape as a cause worthy of the MRM's time or energy. You also don't seem to hold particular empathy for men who are raped in prison, because they knew they were facing the possibility of rape when they committed whatever offence saw them incarcerated - an odd position, btw, given that…

As I see it, the SCUM Manfifesto itself isn't a huge deal - crazy, homocidal bigots write crazy bigoted tracts all the time. The real issue is the way that other feminists react to it. If Mark Lepine, or any other killer that feminists have tried to link to the MRM, published an anti-woman screed, we wouldn't be praising it. I think it can be argued as such, but only when you consider that in the end, the Narrator rejects Tyler Durden and his views on masculinity as well. Neither defining oneself through ownership and consumption, like the start of the film, nor by violent destruction/self-destruction, are positive behaviours for men. This is probably further emphasised in the book, as opposed to the film, where Tyler's plan fails and the Narrator is institutionalised. In ultimately rejecting both consumerist and re…

Even discounting their constantly slagging off of the MRM, there are three fundamental flaws with NSWATM. Their refusal to discard existing feminist concepts - e.g., the pieces they've written about "Nice Guys(TM)", "creeps" and even "mansplainin" - even when those concepts themselves are discriminatory Their reluctance to criticise other mainstream feminists. Awesome post. Many feminists seem to approach gender issues as being issues that occur "between" genders - typically, men imposing some kind of behaviour upon women. Even ideas such as kyriarchy, which present a more diffuse ideas of power dynamics, really just add a step to this dynamic: "evil kyriarchial society forces men to impose this behaviour upon women." Anecdotally, I think most of us see "slut-shaming" as a behaviour more likely to the perpetrated by women, i.e. a means of keeping the …

The crux of the article is basically that the male academics they studied would do work-related tasks while at home - "such as research and publishing papers" - and the women didn't. So, much like the wage gap, it's an issue of women's versus men's choices, rather than any kind of external oppression. And yet, once again, it's presented as "(subject) hurts women". Why do men feel the need to continue working even when on leave? What stops women from doing the same? Only, that would involve actua…

I understand your frustration with feminism; it's a pretty common feeling in the MRM. Given that feminism presents itself as an equality movement, yet often serves to further marginalise men, and dismisses men's rights as misogynistic, or "clinging to male privilege", it's only natural. I do think it's important to recognise the nuance between those who don't care about men's issues and those who simply don't understand, however. The second group are sometimes amenable to discussion, which helps…

I don't think all feminists are like that, but even those who consider themselves egalitarian can often show a considerable blind spot when it comes to men's issues and men's experiences. I find this is even true of male feminists, who often extrapolate their own experiences as representative on men in general - I don't know if you're familiar with Hugo Schwyzer, but as a romantically successful man, his writings tended to completely disregard the issues faced by socially awkward or romantically…

Yes, but men's victimisation is invisible. Men's appointed place in society is to absorb violence and perform shitty tasks for the good of everyone else. That's why "women are the primary victims of war", why "women suffer systemic violence" and why men are "unilaterally privileged": because we're socialised to just not notice men suffering and dying. This is why random internet vitriol is only noticed and only worth discussing when it happens to women. The frustrating part is that, if their cla…
