-Whenever he's driving me somewhere, when I get in the passenger side of the car, I lean over and unlock the driver's side for him. -Dogs are my role model for how to act when he gets home from work. I get excited when I hear him coming in and jump up and hug him. -He likes to do little things for me - repairs, cleaning, etc. - and then wait to see how long it takes me to notice. It takes effort to always be looking for what's different in the house, what might have been done while I was asleep …

When I started sewing, my first project was a felt poodle skirt for a Halloween costume. I'd definitely recommend starting with an easy fabric like felt to ease into it. Other good ideas for your first skirt might be a wrap skirt or asymmetrical skirt. With a wrap skirt, you can skip zippers. With an asymmetrical hem, you can skip the part where you have to get someone to make sure your hem is perfectly even. Another thing that helps me do a better job is doing a practice run of my project on …

Thank you! So far, FlyLady's routines and emails seem to help more than anything. Being able to look at a message that tells me what to clean and suggest things that may need my attention takes a lot of pressure off me. It makes me realize I was paralyzed by the thought, "there's so much to do," that offered nowhere to start. Has the Kon Mari method worked? It inspires me but we are nowhere near ready. We still like some level of extras in storage in case of apocalypse ;) But maybe someday.

Thank you. You know, you're right - but I'm betting on my self-esteem being the result of a vicious cycle that cleaning might help me to break. Maybe if I can give my husband a clean house, and be surrounded by a clean room that doesn't scream "SO MUCH WORK NEEDS TO BE DONE!" I will find more esteem towards myself. Fingers crossed.

Thank you so much for such great suggestions! I've since read Marie Kondo - I'd seen the book before, but the intensity of her method scared me away. Still, I think it's going to be much needed as I work on this. It unexpectedly helped me think a little differently towards letting go of objects, and taking better care of my things. I found it particularly useful to envision the way I want my home to be, and to consider that the things cluttering my home "would prefer" being let go of when they n…

A good friend of mine is a cleaning lady, and two years ago, when I first got my house, I hired her to help me deep clean around the holidays, before special occasions, etc. My husband never knew about her coming to clean. We weren't married or engaged yet, it was my house and my money, and this went on while he was at work, because he is against spending money on things we can, theoretically, do ourselves. I kept it from him because he would have been annoyed, based on his reaction when I broug…

Thank you! I know you're right. In fact, while I'm not crazy about minimalism, sometimes I think aiming for minimalism - even though I will fall short - is the only way I'll get a house I can invite people over without a day's notice for panic-cleaning. Minimizing our house slowly will be key. I'm going to let him store his many tools and antiques in the basement - he's an organized packrat, after all, and every nut and bolt has a home. The basement is huge and unfinished, and he loves being dow…

You are so inspiring! If you can get that much done every week, even working through the negativity about cleaning in your past like mine, and even with full-time work, young children, and a puppy...then anything must be possible! You're so right about shifting perspective. I'm trying to do that now in a big way. In many areas of my life, I have been trying to improve myself for marriage, and as a result of it. In fact, looking for discussion about how to prepare for marriage (not just the part …

Your bare minimum is where I want to be, soon! Definitely going to try the coffee idea. I like coffee in the morning, and the morning sunlight in through the windows always helps me see what needs cleaning, and my progress when I have cleaned it. It's such a waste that it puts me in the mood to clean only when I have to be at work in a few minutes. That's when I typically feel like moving and getting things done. (Which I do, just...at work). Thank you for the blog recommendation! Looks charming…

I just checked her out and this is exactly the kind of resource I was looking for. I'm signing up for those emails. Thank you!
