That's the total cost of ground school, flight time, and paying the instructor. Some instructors are cheaper. Once you obtain the license, however, it does become a lot cheaper because you're no longer paying for the schooling. Cessna 172s at my local airport run $130/hour right now (keep in mind this is only hours that the engine is actually running (known as "Hobbes hours", meaning if you take it for a day, you don't have to pay for 24 hours, just the amount of time the engine was on.)

I got my private pilot's license. Nothing fancy, I fly Cessnas like the 172 or 182. I highly recommend it, great hobby. You can also fly cross country to places you couldn't otherwise take day or weekend trips to. I'll fly back home to see family 10 hours drive away for the weekend, only takes a couple hours in the plane so I can leave Friday after work and be there for a late dinner. Very engaging mental task as well. Also, over 90% of pilots are men, so it passes your manly test.
