You guys shouldn’t need legal fees. Mediation is a few hundred especially if it’s a non-contested divorce. Move just outside the city and commute to make it more affordable. You walk away with 15k so does she. Or, try to legitimately fix your marriage.

Rhode Island is a “best interest of the child” state. I work until 6/7:00 every night. Soon to be ex is a school teacher with holidays, weekends, great hours, etc. In what world would 50/50 be best when I would be paying for daycare for them? My hope is sensibility prevails and we can coparent and arrange a feasible schedule for them that is equitable. As for the house, I don’t want my children to move schools or their childhood home. Ex is the custodial parent, but I’m talking an affluent area in RI close to two of our more prestigious colleges. Obviously background check etc would come with rental. I wouldn’t imagine I’ll have my kids many nights because schedule won’t permit it.

I think for me at least the notion of “joint” custody isn’t feasible for now. In an effort to maintain as much consistency for the kids I relinquished all equity in the house in exchange for no restrictions. Meaning I see them legally whenever I want, can travel with them, etc. It would take me months to get back on solid financial ground, so for me this arrangement worked best.
