I think the most disgusting thing I saw related to this is this woman told a story about how a guy told her he would rather commit sewer-slide than lose her from his life and she just wasn't having it and blocked him. Then, he actually went through with it. Someone said they were sorry she had to go through that and "clearly he was just trying to manipulate you and being selfish" I don't remember what the context was if any was given but like....if he went through with it, clearly he wasn't lyin…

I did some reading on that and common law marriage isn't as simple as the state forces it on you. You both have to be aware of it and agree to it, "represent yourselves to the community" as husband and wife, maybe even the woman goes by the man's last name, etc. It didn't at all seem to me to be something that can be forced on anyone against their will, despite what I initially assumed.

If your ex sacrificed her career to be with your kids, but would have had a chance at a successful career, you have to pay the difference. Why? 1) That sacrifice is a two way street (a choice on her part as well) 2) It depends on who initiated the divorce. The vast majority of the time it's the woman, and I say if she chooses to leave she should get absolutely nothing anyway. Forget #1.

I'm talking about Canada's common law marriage laws, not the OP. /u/scaur said that they do a 50/50 split of everything in a common law "divorce" but in his own link it basically says the only things at risk are assets in both names, which makes much more sense.
