But this comments section here isn't discussing criminal sentencing favoring women, either. This is a Women Behaving Badly post. Guys, we don't want to be known for this. It's severely damaging to our credibility.

But this article doesn't discuss this matter at all.

How is this relevant to the men's rights movement?
/r/MensRights29/04/12 12:42 PM

Yes, the movement absolutely has a credibility problem. In the absence of a sufficient effort to clean up /r/mensrights to make it a better public face for the men's rights movvement, our second best option is to have multiple men's rights spaces with different points of focus, so that discrediting one space is not enough to discredit the entire cause of men's rights. Maybe one part of learning from this setback could involve expanding our support for the men's rights subreddit which I mod, /r/m…

But if these thugs can drive off the reasonable, moderate leaders of the men's rights movement, then they win. They drive off everyone who actually wants to do some good and make a difference in the world, and then all that's left is the elements of both movements with the strongest appetite for all this fighting.

Yep. This isn't a courageous refusal to give women the typical forgiving treatment - instead, it's a political message. And the message is as follows; Look what horrible immoral people these protesters are! Here's a typical example of the kind of people participating - an awful mom and cheating wife who abandoned her loving husband and children to go shack up with some waiter she just met! It's a cheap way to discredit the movement without actually considering the issues they stand for.

This argument would probably find more sympathy if it wasn't coming from the ultimate feminist troll.
/r/MensRights21/10/11 04:35 PM

By your argument, there's no reason why women should have access to legal abortions, since women do have birth control options already!
/r/MensRights21/10/11 03:21 PM

In all fairness, shitredditsays and againstmensrights are not representative of all feminists. They're just the hateful fringes who have nothing better to do than attack progressive movements and work against equality.
/r/MensRights21/10/11 03:14 PM

But that's not what the comment she replied to said. She's replying to a comment that stated "Men should also have some sort of a right to medically aborting their children," Fortunately, most of the MRM doesn't take this argument quite THAT far, I see that most of us do respect individual bodily autonomy.
/r/MensRights21/10/11 03:11 PM

The problem is that so many people still disagree and fight against the first part of that statement - that women should have the right to choose. As long as we haven't even established whether abortion is going to be available to women or not, then we are going to have a hell of a time tackling the last part of your statement.

Ok I went and re-read the article to refresh my memory, because I remembered her calling feminists man-haters and denying any association. Looks like the actual quote was a little different though, As a matter of fact, I pick and choose when I'm a feminist because I'm not down with man-bashing. and later, I know I'm being sexist. The feminist, progressive, modern, cool kid perspective is "we teach children appropriate touching and that men can be trusted, not feared" (she then explains why she r…

Exactly. Why all the "crazy feminist bitch" language in this comic, when what we're dealing with here is a mother who has been influenced by sexist messages that too many people have accepted about men? That's a problem with society. She's not even a feminist.

anonymous reporters and noncustodial parents (usually fathers) most frequently make intentionally false reports. Of the intentionally false allegations of maltreatment tracked by the CIS-98, custodial parents (usually mothers) and children were least likely to fabricate reports of abuse or neglect. interesting

Is it any surprise that boys do poorly in an education system that is overwhelmingly managed, run, and taught by women? The solution isn't more government testing at a younger age in schools. The solution is to change our culture so that men are more widely accepted and welcomed as teachers (and not treated as pedophiles for pursuing a career in education).
/r/MensRights20/10/11 09:59 PM

I'm glad to see the gendered language go, however the "penetration" part is problematic. They've basically redefined sex to mean "being penetrated". This means that when a (heterosexual) couple has sex, really only the woman is having sex. The man is not having sex because he's not being penetrated. And that's ridiculous. Either both people are having sex or neither is having sex. It's a team sport. The only difference between sex and rape is consent - not which person is penetrated.

I'm surprised the men's rights movement hasn't spent more energy and effort promoting this one change - protect the identity of those accused of sexual assault or rape, until there is a conviction in a court of law. It's so obviously right, so easy to gain sympathy, and so important and life-changing to those it affects. Instead of tackling all issues at once, I think the men's rights movement should pick this issue first, and focus all our efforts on actually DOING something with it. One victor…

Really? Do we have to blame feminism for every bad thing that happens to men? Feminists certainly shoulder their share of blame but this attitude really comes off as ridiculous at times.

So close, and yet so far... “The term ‘batterer’ is actually a gender specific term that refers to coercively controlling tactics...That power and control dynamic that really defines domestic violence is often not a power and control dynamic that women are able to access." Some might argue that violence is violence—regardless of who throws the blow—and that changing the language around it minimizes the experience of male victims. However, Larance explains that women use physical force differentl…

There's a key dynamic here which this article didn't discuss... And I'm generalizing greatly here, but it's something I've observed for a while... But, in the young adult years, women have the upper hand in the dating world. But this reverses later on, and in later adulthood, men have the upper hand in the dating world. Women in their 20's and 30's are at their pinnacle. Everyone wants to be with a woman in this age range, including teenagers, including older men. (I'm generalizing of course, bu…

You've already made it abundantly clear that we don't have your support, tentative or otherwise. So while that's fine, it's not your right to declare a gag order that r/masculism is never to be mentioned in here again.

I don't know the individual who posted that submission, and I hadn't seen that submission until you linked me. I appreciate that he wanted to call attention to us, but he seems unaware that we had already posted a promotion submission in here, and obviously I'm not responsible for what other people post. I'm posting here because it's relevant to the topic at hand.

If you want to help steer the men's rights movement in a different direction, then come help set the tone of things at r/masculism - we're almost two weeks old so we're brand new, and trying to keep a somewhat different focus.

sure...they are basically the same as r/againstmensrights, just less explicit in their purpose. But practically, they end up doing the same thing, because most of the links they post are from men's rights. They lurk in men's rights spaces watching and waiting for someone to say something they can (often) take out of context and repost in their forum as an example of "shit reddit says", and in the process paint the entire men's rights movement with the same negative brush by portraying the worst …

Indeed, so I suppose the only question that remains is - what atmosphere, attitude, and ideology do we endorse, and is it the direction we want to go? I have my opinion on that, and everyone else will come to their own conclusion too, but we're striving our best to help contribute to building a robust, influential men's rights movement.

Why would multiple spaces splinter the movement?
/r/MensRights24/09/11 10:37 PM

You know they could easily do this, and there's not much we can do about it. The only speech I control is my own, so I hope everyone can realize that when those hostile spaces speak, they only speak for themselves.

I'm all for a robust gender egalitarian movement. However, this is the world we live in, and so the best thing we can do is to support efforts within the existing movements to move towards the middle, to a more moderate, inclusive, egalitarian approach to both men's rights and feminism. I'm much less concerned with the titles that people go by, and much more concerned with how egalitarian their ideas are.

which one...how does r/mensrights not do this? That one? See thats the thing, there's tons of overlap between what r/mensrights does and what this space is about, the difference is in degree, or focus, or how much priority or energy we spend in that area. If I'm being too vague, a lot of that is because a mod really can't control a subreddit, all he can do is make suggestions and guidelines and point things in the right direction, and then hope for the best. It's going to be up to our users to d…

Ok, you're right, let me amend my statement - every single person was invited to be a moderator, but some chose to decline and preferred approved submitter status instead. And the second was not a lie, SRS members mostly got downvoted. I'm not saying you did it maliciously, but I am saying they'll probably use it as a way to undermine r/MR. Who's they? You're the only one I see trying to use it against us.

No, we oppose censorship and our goal is a hands-off mod policy. The difference is that the subreddit's focus is on outreach. We want to spend more time and energy focusing on reaching out to the general public to help them recognize that men's issues are real and worth paying attention to. We want to bring this to the mainstream. That's the difference. And there doesn't have to be anything wrong with r/mensrights in order for there to be a place for a complementary space. Feminists have r/femin…

Ahh, I never saw your blog response, thanks for the link. For starters, although I've only had a chance to skim what you wrote and will need to read it in more depth later (when I'm not putting out ten fires at once)...you have identified some of the problems with NSWATM which lead to our decision to distance ourselves from them. I don't necessarily agree with everything you said, but you do explain well some of the biggest problems. And for second, yes, it sure looks like there was a misinterpr…

We hope for transparency, consistency, and as hands-off of a mod approach as possible while still maintaining the subreddit. We value freedom of speech, and we will also enforce our rules as fairly and consistently as possible. As you mentioned, hate speech is not allowed.

You are neglecting to count the members who preferred for their own reasons to be approved submitters rather than moderators. It seems that you're attacking me in the same way that manboobz and r/againstmensrights attacks this space - you're cherry picking the worst comments and then painting them as representative of the entire space. That's hardly fair.
/r/MensRights22/09/11 08:38 PM

I wrote an article arguing that society needs to look at the message it sends when rape jokes are funny and consent isn't taken seriously, but that this should be more of an overall attitude change rather than accusing all men of being potential rapists (which is obviously sexist against men). And I never said anything about rape culture.

You need to understand that our r/SRS members have been extremely unpopular, and have been downvoted and disagreed with at every turn. The planning subreddit had almost a hundred members in it, and the two or three problematic members you've identified out of a hundred, did not have a central role in the planning process.

I'm kind of surprised that you're so opposed, considering how helpful you were to me when I reached out to you earlier...and I remain grateful for your very helpful guidance no matter what conclusion you end up coming to about our space, but I still had hoped that you at least would see what I'm really about here. Surely you can see that I'm not responsible for, nor do I endorse, every single thing that any member posts within a space that I moderate, right? If I was to try to control what every…

well, with every single person as a mod, anybody can change the settings anytime, and I have no idea who changed the settings but it's not really fair to do that without giving everyone a warning. I mean, people posted in there under the assumption that it was a closed discussion, and it's not fair to change that without letting everyone know first. We could consider opening it up, its not like we're hiding anything, but it needs to be discussed first.

Mostly just because r/mensrights was taken, and because it seems that if there's a "feminism" then there ought to exist a "masculism" too.

Because in r/communityplans, everyone is a mod, every single person there. Moderator status was meaningless in r/communityplans since it was a group discussion where nobody was appointed above anybody else. In building r/communityplans, I basically invited in anybody who I saw discussing issues that suggested they were interested in a more open, inclusive approach that could help the men's rights movement grow to the mainstream. In doing so, I was inviting in a whole lot of unknown people on the…

Oh, we have a whole lot of goals! Our primary goal is growth, and spreading awareness of these issues beyond the small circle of activists we have here, and reaching the public mainstream. Read the sidebar and you'll see an outline of all the ways we hope to see men's rights discussion unfold. As for positions on the issues, well to a certain degree it's not really appropriate for moderators to dictate positions to their users - a lot of the positions will unfold naturally as the community discu…

I hope to clear up a lot of that with the announcement that I just posted here, but in a nutshell, we are focused more on outreach and on helping the men's rights movement get mainstream support. Our purpose is to grow this movement and to make men's rights a common, household term that average people know about and support, and we intend to do this through a very welcoming, open, inclusive approach to the issues, as well as in other ways.

The problem with these stupid wars between feminists and MRAs, is the generalizing happening on both sides. Not all feminists are anything. Not all MRAs are anything. I'm sure that quite a few second-wave feminists were wonderful mothers who raised healthy happy well-adjusted men as sons. But some of them didn't. And I am friends with the sons of these women, and I have heard their stories about the things they were taught and the way they were treated for being male, and I've seen how it affect…

I'm absolutely blown away that this comment got linked by r/againstmensrights as somehow being bad. I guess they don't realize that some of the male children of second-wave feminists grew up being taught that their penis makes them evil and that their sex drive is a horrible instrument of rape that they inflict upon any woman they pursue? That kind of talk will really ruin you when it comes from your own parents during the confusion and turmoil of figuring out your own identity during adolescenc…

Understand the difference between trying to ally with all of feminism, vs not rejecting individuals who support men's rights merely because they choose the label "feminist" for themselves. We do not support all of feminism, nor do we want to work with all of them, as there are many branches of feminism that have worked directly against men's rights. Instead, we're trying to make men's rights an inclusive, open movement that welcomes support from anybody who wants to give it regardless of which o…

I understand your suspicions. I don't have a very deep history with men's rights, and I'm really an MRA on principle, because it's a cause I support, but I've mostly just been reading and listening for a while. But I see an opportunity here, and somebody's got to take the initiative. I think it would have been better coming from an established leader within r/mensrights, but if you sit around waiting for someone else to do things, then nothing will ever get done. But, that's why I'm doing a priv…

First, I was never a mod. I was a person who wrote two articles for NSWATM when invited to do so by another redditor. I was unaware of NSWATM's manboobz affiliations or strong feminist lean - instead, when I got involved, I thought it was a more moderate men's rights space. When I discovered their manboobz affiliations, I first attempted to urge them to cut ties with a site that is anti-mensrights. They were not willing to do so. Because of this, I have left the blog as a writer not as a mod bec…

Yeah and that's the distinction which patriarchy theory seems to gloss over...male privilege isn't equally distributed. Not all men are on top and powerful simply by virtue of being men. The men who conform best to gendered expectations for men, who show all the machismo and leadership and power that we expect of "proper" men, are the ones who rise to those top positions. But men who don't do well at fitting into such a rigid, narrow role, can just as easily find themselves crushed and beaten up…
