In my experience, I've come across lots of super-smart people in fields like physics, astronomy, mathematics, maybe chemistry. For my program, the main difference was the Thesis. One way I might describe a thesis is: become the world leading expert in something. It'll be microscopically narrow, but you're the expert. Another way I might describe the thesis: nobody is going to tell you to do it. Self motivation 100%. My experience was different. My Bachelor was one type of engineering, masters in another. For one class I covered the prerequisites by reading the pre-req textbook on my own time. I don't understand why these companies don't just hire the most qualified individuals. Small companies do. It's one of their advantages. But not big companies. Because once a company reaches a certain size, and has one or more monopoly positions in the market, it doesn't mater what they do.
