My good friend grew up in a poor urban town where the high school had a daycare. He went to college with me, and was top of our class in engineering. was an overall good dude too. only thing I wanted to add is - lots of people are mentioning trades but if you work hard and make good grades in community college, you can get a nice scholarship to a 4-year university. similarly, there's the military as well. lots of positions that don't involve bodily harm or going to Iraq. Just choose carefully with that option.
