So no cold approaching whatsoever? I thought a good rule of thumb would be approaching exclusively in ”appropriate” settings like clubs or bars.

That was not at all what I meant. It’s easier to speak in metaphors and analogies when it comes to topics this deep. To put it differently, everyone has certain qualities within them, and some qualities conflict with each other. A perfect partner is someone whose qualities thoroughly compliment your own. That’s quite rare, though, and convergence often takes a long time. Point was that OP shouldn’t get discouraged if he has difficulty finding a partner by cold approach.

If you’re not that handsome, don’t cold approach. You can, but don’t rely on it. Your friend likely was more attractive than you. The dating market is a market, you need to provide value, and your soulmates are your ideal customers. You just need to find them.
