48 here. A fair bit of approach anxiety but that's more to do with living in a small UK town and not wanting to be known as "that guy". That said, when I DO approach the results have been good, usually with girls around half my age. I get rejected obviously, but generally forget about those. It helps that I run a coffee shop and meet a lot of nice women. I have a rule to not hit on customers but it increases my sociability overall.

I had this same problem. I got a part time job as a barista around my web design work. Some of my closest friends now were customers in the coffee shop. Drinking buddies, climbing partners, new clients. I even got offered an acting part in a play! And I now know a huge amount of people in my town just to chat to. Basically, do something that makes you be sociable and allows you to meet a lot of people.
