One of the scariest things is there are no effective laws against stalkers and the like. The police waits for them to rape/murder you in order to take some action, which is ridiculous!

I definitely support having separate bank account, but I don't agree with the hiding part. It's a form of test, you see. If your precious hubby has any problem with the fact that he's not in total control of you and your finances, then you need to leave and find a HVM who will respect your independence. Hiding your money and living in fear is already a bad relationship.

I'm not so sure about the past being better - it was socially accepted to beat your wife. All my old relatives ladies have mentioned casually about being beaten at some point. Nowadays this problem is getting a bit better but it still needs work. I think the conditioning comes from the older generation, that women should endure in the name of the family. The divorce rates show that more modern women don't agree with this anymore.
