Reading Models is arguably the only material you need to read when trying to understand attraction. The best thing to do is to not chase after him. You already tried to make an effort to keep in touch. There is no need to make another. He could have been too kind and unclear but there is no need to dwell. Also declining a coworkers friend request is also kind of weird if you never tried to flirt with him while you two worked together.

An idea would be to ask for a pen and return it after class when everyone is leaving and start with how you appreciate it, talk about the class and/or bullshit for a minute. Then when she or you are leaving tell her you think she is cute and if she would want to hang out. Don't draw out the conversation, because its the day time (not a party where you can drag it along) and people have places to be. Just shoot your shot (RIP Kobe) after a minute or so of conversation.
