Interesting critique. I have a few issues though. First the dishonesty. I think an unverifiable white lie to get by institutional red tape is ok. If I did take her out later I'd tell her the truth in the first hour of the date and explain that I really just wanted to see the penthouse. If she bolts that's fine. On the topic of how to act at events. If you don't have anything to do show up early and offer to help setting up or find the other early people and hang out with them. Don't feel self conscious about being alone there and DON'T TRY TO LOOK IMPORTANT BY PLAYING WITH YOUR PHONE (unless you texting friends to come meet you).

Stay up really really late and do your studying in public study rooms. It helps if you have something to offer other people like the popular group video games and a TV in your room. Join a sports team. There are flyers everywhere for weird events. Go to all of them. Friend-zone the hottest girls. If your friends are talking about doing something enthusiastically invite yourself along. Be careful bro. My friend used to hand out stuff in the NYC subway and for a couple Halloweens he wore a banana outfit. He got the shit kicked out of him multiple times every year he wore that outfit. Now he wears a Luigi outfit and never has any problems. Moral of the story: If you're dressed in a banana outfit you better know how to fight.
