That post was mortifying! The man married some lady he wasn't that into, had three kids with her and they were 13 years into the marriage before he let her know that he completely settled. I agree with the posts that assert that these situations don't come out of nowhere. There are always clues, tells, and red flags. I was thrust into the dating pool in my early 30's post divorce from a cheating husband, and really had to start to examine if the men I was dating were over their exe's. I tended t…

I am loving these outlooks and answers! food preferences: agree, at a certain age, especially if a person values their health, fruits, veggies and healthy food portions should be the norm. In that vein, a guy should know how to cook the basics and engage in that for a good majority of his meals. The perpetual takeout person is usually pretty unhealthy and lazy. FDS really turned me on to the men who don’t wash their asses trope. It’s a real thing! I know of men who only use water to wash with no…

I was in that boat, and really should have waited about a year to heal (though I kept dates away from my kids). My own family was very against me dating until my kids were adults, which I found ridiculous.

I’d take the “don’t date separated men” rule further and say don’t date a man less than a year out from an official divorce. I’ve dated men who were 3-4 months from their finalized divorce, and it was always a shit show. They were still hung up on their ex’s (not necessarily pining to get back with them but still over communicating with them even with kids involved), had not worked on themselves or performed any self reflection whatsoever.

I couldn’t watch it anymore after episode 4, and then only hung on because I’d have it one while treadmill running. Brad’s D in episode 3 was a highlight (is it real!?). Billie is awful. She’s the protagonist who I think is supposed to present as a caged and conflicted housewife who is pining for an ex (Brad) who sexually rocked her world eight years ago and emotionally abused her to the hilt as well. In fact, he ends up FaceTiming her in present day while he has sex with her best (seems like on…

I have a different spin with the same result as the OP. I just broke it off with a man who was divorced from someone who was (is probably) an alcoholic and diagnosed with BPD. They have a son who very glaringly has systemic issues from FASD. Soooo, at first he mentions her alcoholism and BPD does not use the term crazy ex so points for him. I cannot stand the term “crazy” whether it is made up by a manipulative man or a description of mental illness. As time passed it was obvious she was still i…

Dammmitttt, yes, every.single.man I’ve ever spoken with about the 5 Love Languages always professes touch as his number 1. And I, like a clown, tried to educate and say, “many men conflate that with sex but it is actual physical non sexual touch.” Blank stares ensued.

I can confirm it is easier to raise children alone than children plus a NVM. My ex husband thought he was father of the year for changing a diaper every once in a blue moon (usually coincided with his parents’ visits).

Lol, the plot gets no better. I kept wondering why a hot, billionaire woman wants Daniel the near 30’s guy with no ambition who lives with his parents. Spoiler the lady who proposed goes after his near 30’s brother with no talent or ambition who lives with his parents.

I could even go along with her, “is the person perpetrating the behavior actually distressed” logic if that logic led to, and if he isn’t then he needs to learn how to respect his partner or get left.

Another mark against the Dave Ramsey clan. I used to listen to his podcast daily many years ago and they inspired me to get out of debt, so for that I’m thankful. But with this garbage and his recent lawsuit (he fired several employees for having premarital sex) I am finished.

Yes! I dated someone who had the shakes from Alcoholism, but the kind that I guess are more permanent than run-of-the-mill DT’s because of the prolonged excessive drinking over the course of two decades (think early teenage drinker). It was bananas the abject denial and strange behavior. I guess he wasn’t drinking for about a month into us drinking because he was subject to random drug screenings from a civil court order related to even getting a small sliver of visitation for his kids. Lol, lady military officer here. I agree with a majority of what you said, and married service members also don’t have to live in barracks or get put on weekend details as much as their single counterparts.

Pre-FDS I dated a LVM who was definitely an alcoholic. He went on and on about how his ex wife (who used to be cool and down for driving around with him while they chugged beers from a cooler in the back) abruptly wanted both of them to stop drinking for good when she became pregnant. She explained that she grew up with an alcoholic father and did not want an environment like that for their child. The way he spoke about how wrong and terrible of a request it was shook me out of my coma. I looked…

I definitely had the ghost dad. My mom and him have been married for over 45 years now, and their dysfunction still amazes me. She can’t “leave him at the house alone” too long or else “something might happen” (ie he is very dependent and refuses to do things for himself). I look back and see that my dad really didn’t contribute anything to the household but was very proud to say he had a job and supported his family. That literally consisted of getting a paycheck every week (my mom was in charg…

Amen for posting this. I am in a relationship that I THINK is with a HVM, but I also want a prenup. My outlook is that everything I have now (house, rental home, retirement accounts, etc.) is mine and ultimately my kids’ if I punch out earlier than expected. I was thinking to myself that if I ever get married again I would insist on a prenup that protects all I have now so I can walk away with what I brought in if there is a divorce and a will that divides my assets among my kids (guy has 60 day…

So in a Women’s Reading Group course in law school we learned never to type in an email “just”. For example, “I just wanted to see how you had progressed or this or that.” or “I was just thinking maybe we could do this or that.” I used to catch myself making myself small via email in that way and have now eliminated “just”. But I still love emojis on text and Reddit. 😉

Agree with above, he will re-tell a half version of the story where you randomly came to his place one evening and took everything out in trash bags to include the light bulbs because you’re so crazy and unreasonable. If asked what he did about it; it will be a blabbering of what could I do? I am a nice guy and a victim.

Are you me!? I was in a dual military officer marriage from commissioning until senior Captain, and had the harder career demands (PSYOP) and much better evaluations but my now ex did not pull his weight around the homestead when we had kids. Nor did any of my male peers. It is systemic throughout the military that males get wide appliances that take care of everything outside the military career. I routinely witnessed my male peers lying to their spouses about what duty stations were available …

Amen, I dated someone who was more like the modern day man with the $70k/yr salary, $70k home equity and maybe $60k in a 401k who I had way more than and you would think he had a multi-million dollar net worth the way he convinced himself that “everyone was after his money”. He once told me that he knew I was into him for him because I had more, but also that he had to protect his assets from me.....which equated to crappy gifts and low effort.

Military officer with ex military officer husband here; thank goodness we are stationed 100’s of miles apart and I have the children 78% of the year (I did a sweet spreadsheet for the courts when he tried to eradicate his child support payments). I wholeheartedly agree with the above posters. I’ve seen countless men go on and on about how their children are their lives and they devote everything to them as single dads, but being a single dad is having them one Wednesday per week and every other …

Yes! The least involved father can really step it up in the court room for child custody and lowering child support (on the promise he will be more present and involved smh).

Military hands down. I’m an Army officer, and can attest to the fact that many men in service have a gross sense of entitlement (officer and enlisted). Not to mention implicitly that the women (and sometimes men) who hitch themselves to service members will become isolated from friends and family due to numerous moves.

Single mom, six figure salary, home owner with a rental property on the side and two sons. I can’t tell you how pissed I get when bare minimum “fathering” is praised to the utmost. I agree with the previous posts; it is better to be a single mother than a married single mother!

While sexual harassment is very pervasive; assault is not. Make good choices in terms of the company you keep, make sure to hang out in groups and common areas. If you want to invite someone of the opposite sex to your room make it clear there will be no sex (unless that’s what you’re going for). If someone from the opposite sex invites you to his room make it clear why you are there or don’t go. Watch out for the older guys with more rank if they seem to be giving you unwanted attention. There …

I took the recommendation for this book from an earlier post on here. It is a great book and very insightful into identifying and leaving abusive men. Abuse comes in all shapes and sizes. Bancroft crushes the myth that abuse is black eyes and battered women.

Or my favorite “we just kissed” that is code for “we totally had sex multiple times”.
