They know the maximum sentence is to be held in custody until their 21st birthday. I once saw a case in court where a woman accused a man of rape. On the day of the alleged attack the supposed rapist was incarcerated a 1000 miles away from the alleged victim. She was eventually charged for filing a false report. I don't know what the disposition was on that case, but I'm sure she learned her lesson from the couple of hours of community she had to do.
