This 1,000%. They know. And honestly even if they don't, who wants to be romantically involved with someone that oblivious? It was like pulling teeth to get my ex to pay attention to my concerns. He constantly feigned ignorance no matter how clearly I communicated things. On the other hand, my husband is so in tune with me that sometimes he realizes I'm upset before I do. I never have to bend over backwards because he's just always listening and paying attention. It's not that hard!

Luckily for me he didn't need my financial support; he was a trust fund baby. I was the only one who worked, and God help me but I would have supported him if he had needed it. He convinced me for a long time that he was serious about being an independent adult and building a real life with me. You're right that it's very easy to disclose too much in the name of communication. Communication is only healthy and helpful if the other person is trustworthy. So many women have been brainwashed to bel…

Absolutely. And when you do decide to just leave/ignore/block/delete so you don't get sucked into their nonsense, they will act like you're being cold or cruel. It's challenging to put up that strong, instant boundary once you realize where things are going, and women do catch backlash socially for doing it. But the alternative is much worse.

You're absolutely right. When abusive people, or even just selfish, childish people with no self-awareness, go into therapy, they just end up with a shiny new list of justifications for their behavior. One of my cousins was with a deadbeat, emotionally aloof boyfriend for years and wouldn't leave him because she insisted he was "working on himself." All he was doing was going to the same therapist over and over again to have his warped perspectives on everything validated.

It's really wild that he is framing this situation as "awkward" rather than horrifying. 90% of his concern appears to be that this teenager doesn't fit in with his friend group and she's bringing down the vibe. If she could drink and was filled out enough to register as "hot" in OP's opinion, would he still be worried that his friend is grooming a kid? There seems to be so little worry about the girl herself.

It's enraging that the kind of men who have this attitude are also usually the kind to assume that basic acts of politeness are signs of sexual interest. Like which is it, Herbert? Are all women supposed to smile at all men to avoid getting murdered, or does the 18-year-old you're harassing on the metro definitely want you to chat her up because look at that customer service smile!

This. 1,000% this. I struggled for years with extreme people-pleasing. Every time I started to assert myself, I felt like I was at risk of becoming a raging selfish asshole. I finally realized that I'm not going to wake up one day as a selfish jerk anymore than I'm going to spontaneously develop a six pack. My sense of empathy isn't going anywhere, I just need to apply more of it to myself and less to people who don't reciprocate.

We need sex education programs to address this kind of thing. There are so many women who have been brainwashed to believe that it's normal/fine for a man to be disinterested in emotional connection during sex, so the woman needs to bend over backwards to "spice things up" in order to be worthy of basic intimacy. Obviously when you're in a long-term relationship, your partner can become so comfortable and familiar that you start craving experimentation and novelty, and there's absolutely nothing…

I'm not a shrink, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that this is "common" normal, not "healthy" normal. Fantasizing about celebrities or attractive strangers is one thing, but this person is deliberately seeking out photos of women he knows and socializes with. That seems extremely weird to me. Being attracted to a "friend" is awkward enough without going to enormous efforts to sexualize them. I snorted when I got to the mention of putting the pictures side by side so he can imagine a three…

These idiots will refuse to take a woman seriously until she's furious, exhausted, and ready to bounce. Then it's "She just left me/threw all my shit on the lawn/swore never to fuck me again, and I don't even know why!"

This man is 31. years. old. If I had to guess his age based on his writing, I would assume he was still a teenager. I have so many queries! Why is it so hard for him to understand that this small, extremely unobtrusive and low maintenance self-care item is important to his girlfriend? Why does he think his family will make fun of her or judge her for having a special towel for her hair? Are they really that shitty? If so, why tf is he asking her to stay overnight in their house? Why does he seem…

Translation: I have been harassing my coworker for years with clumsily veiled sexual advances and disclosures about my personal life. She has been too polite or nervous to tell me to fuck off so bluntly that it is impossible for even my willfully delusional ass to ignore. Now she's leaving, probably at least in part to get away from the toxic and suffocating work culture I've helped to create. Will someone please soothe my wounded fee-fees? Speculation, obviously. My ex wouldn't let me take the lead in planning our honeymoon in Europe, even though he had never traveled internationally before and I had done so half a dozen times. I warned him so many times that the itinerary he'd planned was way too aggressive, with too many border crossings and flights and just an extremely convoluted and inefficient timeline. We ended up spending almost three full days in airports off and on. At one point, we had to sleep overnight at an airport after missing a connectin…

Absolutely. Some of it is sour grapes, not wanting to see other people benefit from things you didn't have access to or weren't willing to do for yourself. "Well I did just fine without." The thing is, if they were really fine, they wouldn't be discouraging other people from doing the best they can for themselves.

I would recommend the Mistress of the Art of Death series by Ariana Franklin, but TW for violence and sexual assault. The series is set in medieval England and does not pull any punches in describing how women and minorities were treated. The protagonist, Adelia, is a female physician and the medieval equivalent of a forensic examiner. I find her to be extremely well written and inspiring as she demonstrates courage, cleverness, and general bad-assery while dealing with sexism, racism, and preju…

I would recommend "Why Does He Do That" by Lundy Bancroft. If she can be persuaded to read it, it should communicate clearly and effectively why the behavior she's tolerated in the past is (a) abusive and (b) unlikely to ever change. I would also recommend "Why Men Love Bitches" by Sherry Argov. Between the two, this one may be more likely to get through to her because it's written from the perspective of how to attract the right men rather than how to avoid the wrong ones. Since having a man in…

If he's as amazing as she describes, why are signs of aging bothering her so much? Thirty-six is no spring chicken, but it's not geriatric either. Is she really upset for some other reason? Is she concerned he's going to go old-man mode as quickly as possible and stop taking care of himself, stop wanting to do fun/exciting things, etc.? In other words, how likely is it that this sudden concern is about his age/appearance and not his personality? I'm not saying a 10-year age gap isn't inherently …

I don't understand this tendency men have to assume their peer group includes every man their age, even if they're insanely attractive, famous, wealthy, cultured, intelligent, etc. Like yes, if some incredibly respectful, classy, attractive, well-groomed older man wanted to woo me with scintillating conversation, wine tastings, fine food, and trips abroad, all while doting on me emotionally, not expecting any sex before commitment, being amazing in the sack when we finally did get there, and ass…

Even if it wasn't extremely insulting and offensive to invalidate a person's attempts at self-improvement/self-care, how willfully ignorant do you have to be at this point to assume that needing therapy or medication means someone is "crazy" or pathetic? That's on a par with thinking the world is flat. You have to be stupid or deliberately ignoring modern science to believe it.

Exactly. Having a mental illness is not an excuse for hurting people. I think everyone who struggles with mental health has done things they're not proud of in part because of it, but you still have to take responsibility for your mistakes and do your best to correct them. If you're unable or unwilling to do that, people have every right to limit contact with you until that changes. The difference between you and your family is that you have a sense of accountability and empathy. Who knows how p…

Narcissism transcends culture. Your mom sounds exactly like my privileged American mom except maybe a bit more blunt. I'm not discounting that your parents have experienced trauma and that could explain some of their behavior. But if you ever find yourself tempted to cut them too much slack over that, just keep in mind that there are plenty of traumatized people out there who manage to avoid actively emotionally terrorizing their family. Even if what he's saying were accurate, it would be a shockingly stupid thing to say. "Men have been oppressing women since the dawn of civilization but you guys have been ruining that for 30 whole years! That's not fair!" Also hella weird that he thinks the women's rights movement is only like a generation old. We done been complaining about their shit for centuries. But I guess his grasp of history is tenuous.

Yet another case study in why women should never marry down. So many shitty men out there who will resent you for being more accomplished than them. I'd bet my left tit the only reason he's angry is because it makes him feel insanely insecure that she's still enjoying massive success as a writer while holding down a full-time job AND creating and raising a human AND presumably taking care of his whiny ass. I wonder if female celebrities are ever coached by PR people to politely put up with creepy male celebrities during public appearances, especially if they're beloved "kindly" old men. There are so many people commenting on these videos whining about how he's not being creepy, he's a national treasure blah blah. As appalling and shitty as it is, the women might catch backlash for being cold to this old creeper. Yet another demonstration of the fact that even the most wealthy, privileged women don…

Within the debate surrounding the ethics of sex work, why is there so little discussion and acknowledgement of the fact that having sex with someone against your will is so deeply soul-murdering? Let's assume for the sake of argument that we have a unicorn on our hands: a woman who truly wants to be a sex worker and is not doing it because she feels she has no other options. Unless she also genuinely wants to have sex with every single one of her clients (and of course she doesn't), she is riski…

I don't think the use of the term "libfem" in this context is meant as a criticism of liberal politics in general. It's more of a commentary on how a liberal facade is often placed over the same misogynistic bullshit that a lot of Republicans believe. The packaging is different; the product is the same. A good example of this is that many Republicans believe women's bodies should be private property (owned by their husbands/God), whereas many Democrats believe women should be public property, wi…

You don't owe anybody an explanation for why you don't want to get involved with poly, but if you want a quick way to shut them up when they're criticizing or questioning your desire for monogamy, I'd try something along these lines: "My platonic and family relationships are extremely important to me, and I'm a busy person in general. I simply don't have time to maintain multiple romantic relationships." Again, it's dumb for them to judge you, and you're not obligated to explain, but I feel like…

I don't mean to offend but having a leash reactive dog is usually not a good thing unless the behavior has been deliberately trained and is controlled by commands. And untrained "protection work" is often just a dog being aggressively territorial about you, also not a good thing. If your dog is responsive to your commands on leash even when a strange man is approaching and will stop barking, lunging, etc. when you tell her to it's not a problem, but otherwise I would recommend carefully training…

I just...I know I shouldn't expect an attempt at empathy from this guy. But maybe, just maybe, it's not really about the bedframe. Maybe women are reluctant to get involved with men who care so little about themselves and their own environment. If they lived in a culture in which bedframes were considered a luxury for some reason or most people didn't use them, it wouldn't be an issue. But for a man who makes a decent living to just not bother with this incredibly basic aspect of comfort and aes…

I used to get hit on by teenage boys when I was in my early/mid-20s. I found this horrifyingly awkward and hilarious, not sexy. My first instinct was to resting bitch face and tell them to knock it off. Poly seems to be all about the worship of sex as an inherent good and the consumption of people as if they're products. I need someone for dirty sex, and someone for crunchy hippie sex in the woods, and someone to go to fancy liquor bars with. I need a blonde and a redhead and someone with tattoos. I need to collect and conquer people like a trophy hunter, and I need to do this while feeling that I'm more moral and open-minded than the people who stare in horror at my lifestyle. If food is something you're passionate about, I would say a guy being indifferent to/disgusted by most foods would be an issue, UNLESS he goes above and beyond to care about the fact that it's important to you. If he's willing to take you out to enjoy new foodie experiences, learn to prepare foods you love even if he doesn't like them, etc. then no worries. As an introvert, polyamory is so puzzling to me. If you want to be single and play the field, just do that. If you want to have casual sex, just do that, and call it what it is: fucking around. Why would any sane person want to actively be in a romantic relationship with multiple people? If you're actually being ethical about that, there have to be so many conversations and negotiations about boundaries and scheduling and prioritizing. That sounds completely exhausting. I wouldn't be surprised if she's been in this situation before and ended up dealing with an angry scrote or a full-blown stalker. This is absolutely true. It's so easy to get trapped in a cycle of working too much and neglecting the work of building mental and physical health, then turning to retail therapy because we feel exhausted and just want a magic bullet of some kind. It's important to remember that being materialistic and loving beautiful things and refreshing experiences don't have to go hand in hand. I think part of it is that a lot of these men aren't really strong, they're just rigid. Rigid things break easily when pressure is applied, and they've learned to avoid having pressure put on them by throwing tantrums when people make demands of them in personal and professional relationships. When a man is despairing over a woman being angry with him, odds are he doesn't actually feel helpless. He's just hoping his mantrum will persuade her to stop expressing emotions that fail to make his pee-…

This. It takes such a massive level of entitlement and such a massive lack of empathy to become an abuser, and every single one of the steps Lundy outlined requires the abuser to do a complete 180 in terms of how they perceive their partner and themselves. It's theoretically possible an abuser will do all of these things, but it's a terrible bet. In contrast, its extremely likely they will backslide into abusive behavior the second they're stressed or frustrated.

I used to think this is the main reason I don't really bother venting to a person (man or woman) who is being a dick. I assume that either they know what they're doing or they're stupid. Either way, they probably won't respond to anything other than concrete consequences. I also don't want to waste my energy getting angry at someone who won't understand or care about my anger (even if it's perfectly justified.) It's absolutely cheating and dangerous to use psychedelics if you're unwilling or unable to do a ton of self-reflection, preparation, and integration after the experience. It's a process that should be respected, not used by a man-baby to put a facade of respectability and wisdom over the gross lifestyle choices he's pre-selected to satisfy his wiener.

Is there a close friend or relative you can go stay with for awhile, someone who can support you and keep you accountable for blocking/going no contact? I know it's easier said than done, but this is so scary. It's crucial that you get out of this situation as quickly as possible. It isn't going to get easier and it will almost definitely get more dangerous, especially if he senses he's starting to lose his hold on you.

I stayed with him for over six years, against my better judgement. I know it's hard to leave. I know you feel guilty and responsible for him. He knows it too, and he will use it against you every chance he gets, because you are not valuable to him. Unlike you, he isn't considering what's best for the person …

This post is spot on and it needs more upvotes. Ladies, even if you're in a committed relationship with someone you trust, be careful about how you disclose trauma. Does their behavior toward you change in any negative way? When I told my ex husband I'd experienced trauma (without giving him any detai…

I'm so sorry this has happened to you. A lot of ladies are suggesting that you seek legal help and that should definitely be your first step in my opinion. I'm amazed at how the presence or absence of cooking skills can be such a massive indicator of HVM potential. Not saying it's perfect obviously, but if a man can't cook and isn't willing to learn, I'd be running for the hills. When I'm struggling with regret around my decision to stay in a toxic dead-end relationship that wasted 6 years of my 20s, I remind myself how much I've learned from that experience.
