A lot of people here have said that, it's not a rare opinion that gets down votes here. It's an incredibly popular one, which is interesting because the MRM claims to be a human rights organisation. But don't tell me you think all women are incapable of lying. Why would I think that? Everyone is capable of lying. What I'm saying is that it's repulsive that an organisation that claims not to hate women and belittle rape victims would ever say such outrageous things, especially considering there a…

I'm sorry for what happened to you, and I'm glad you've found here to be a positive environment, but I've lost count of the threads and comments where it's discussed that "most cases of rape are regretted drunk sex". When I'm back at my laptop I'll link you to some. Heck, even at their conference once speaker said that women use saying they've been raped after regretting drunken sex as a "get out of jail free card". I find that incredibly disrespectful and hurtful. I am glad to hear you find thi…

I didn't notice that they weren't the same poster, which looking back is kind of obvious. You're implying that the fall out (this boy getting in trouble) is a natural course of action and that gun control is the solution. What would your solution be? I'm not from the US but I know that no children where I'm from have gotten suspended from school for making a shooting motion with their hands. Maybe there's some other reason for the paranoid and hysteria in the States over guns in schools that I'm…

I can understand being frustrated at being lumped in with nutters if you're from a hunting background. I guess the difference here is in where we're looking at it from. Given my upbringing in a country where firearms are very restricted, I view this point of yours as being invalid: Not having a legally obtained gun isn't going to stop shootings. It isn't going to stop mass killings. People who are doing bad things don't care about going through proper legal channels to obtain weapons. There have…

Well then what's your problem with what happened here? If you don't have a problem with the hysteria in your country over guns and school shootings then why do you care if young children are suspended for playing? If you believe that it's acceptable for every citizen to own firearms and for access to weapons to be incredibly easy and straightforward, why do you have a problem with the inevitable fallout of innocent people getting shot while living their lives and terror of school shootings being…

You don't think that this is an issue about America's relationship with guns rather than it being about "the feminists"? I've literally never heard of a child in Europe being suspended for making a shooting action with their hand. And that includes a good many what I'm sure you'd refer to as "feminist nanny-states". Wouldn't it make more sense to question gun culture and hysteria in America rather than blindly blaming this on feminists?

Ok, then I'm afraid your point wasn't very clear and I missed what you were getting at. I'm not talking about the risks everyone takes by going outside of being mugged or attacked (which are very preventable with the right kinds of social initiatives (the city I'm currently living in has one third the level of crime than the city in from)). I'm talking about sexual assaults, which are also preventable through similar social initiatives, and yet everyone here is getting riled up when I say that I…

I don't believe men have ever been told they needed to take self defense classes to avoid being raped by women (or other men). So where are you getting "men have been told to decent themselves for hundreds of years"? sprinkle in the first world are so coddled it's retarded. Reality is reality. Rape and murder happen. So your solution to both is.... do nothing? Tough shit, life is bad, there's no point trying to prevent murders and rapes even though there's established ways of reducing both? Bett…

psychopaths Do you really think all sexual assaults are being committed by mentally ill people? Aside from the fact that the vast majority of rapes are carried out by someone the victim knows, if you think the swathes of mentally ill people roaming the streets are the only ones doing the raping, maybe we should look at improving mental health services instead of throwing our hands in the air and saying "shit happens, deal with it".
/r/MensRights12/06/14 05:01 AM

Have you taken self-defence classes? I understand standing up for yourself, and being confident and physically fit, but I don't think it's fair to be telling one gender that they need classes to defend themselves against another. Does it not depress you that we have to tell women to learn how to defend themselves against men? It depresses the hell out of me. Surely tackling rape culture rather than promoting it in this way is a much better way to reach the ideal where no sexual assaults happen (…

I know better than to go jogging with earbuds by myself after dusk, why doesn't everyone else? Carry mace, learn a self defense course. I always find this insulting to men. It implies that they can't control themselves and will rape when they see an opportunity, and that self-defence classes are all that are keeping them off you. You shouldn't need to learn a self-defence course, people should just not attack you. Why put up with cowering behind your mace and self defence classes that rather tha…

First off, here's the wiki for the scandals in Ireland. Here, and here and here, and here are articles that discuss how advocacy groups aren't happy with all Pope Francis has done towards the sex scandals. I really dislike what he said in an interview recently "is perhaps the only public institution to have acted with transparency and responsibility. No one else has done more. Yet the Church is the only one to have been attacked. The statistics on the phenomenon of violence against children are …

I'm well aware of that, also part of the reason I said the church was anti-women. As this is the men's rights sub I didn't think you'd be interested in me listing off the ways in which the church has actively hurt women, rather I thought I would give an example of how they've abused boys and men too. It's not a competition, there's no need to turn it into one. The church has only ever acted in its own best interests, and I thought it was outrageous that members of this sub were able to put aside…

I'm on my phone now but when I get home I'll reply with sources. I grew up with this surrounding me and yes, it does hit close to home. It sickens me what those men got away with, and the fact that the Vatican knew and did nothing to stop it completely enrages me. Your last sentence is strange, I never blamed the pope for what an individual priest did, I'm saying he's complicit in what was essentially a cover-up by the church that enabled known paedophiles to continue to have access to, and to s…

One dissenting voice among so many is not acceptable in a sub that claims to be dedicated to the welfare of men and boys. Also, u/lafielle had made it look like a footnote and no one has mentioned it since that one small reference to it. Either everyone here is too young to remember the scandals/old enough but not from a country especially affected by it, or else the condemnation of feminism is more important to them than the thousands of boys who were raped and violated by members of the commun…

Sorry, do people here not realise that they're lauding the man who is head of an organisation that covered up (and essentially condoned) the systemic and horrific sexual abuse of young boys? Have I lost my mind? Because the man expressed some anti-feminist view you're suddenly ok with the fact that he is the head of an organisation that covered up for child rapists? I've seen feminists lament shock humor but never the casual dismissal of underage male victims. Where? Absolutely no one I know who identifies as a feminist has ever dismissed the rape of children, no matter their gender. I also haven't come across any feminist school of thought that advocates the rape of children. The only time I've ever seen anyone say "cool, props to the kid for getting with his teacher", is on places like reddit. Actually, recently on a MRA-related subreddit I was reading a …

You also need to look at the other side of the ledger. Equipment for STEM - maybe not so much for the M - tends to be expensive. You need competent people to run it. Whereas for Feminist Studies, you need mouthy ladies spouting the party line, and there's no shortage of them. lol ok, sounds like you've really got a handle on how STEM and Women's Studies go down, don't think I'll be able to argue my way out of that even with my years of working in universities. Can't say I ever experienced that, nor have my supervisors (who incidentally are extremely pro getting more women into the higher levels of science). I'm always curious as to which area of science people who pooh-pooh psychology work in. I imagine that unless you work in psychology or at least the sciences then you wouldn't really understand the amount of statistics and experimental design that goes into the study of psychology. Fine, with regards that link you just put up, what part of it are you disagreeing with? The message is that promoting ongoing contact is not about legislation; it is about quality of relationships, especially the quality of those relationships before parents separated. In the vast majority of cases that come to court, the courts agree contact. In 2010, only 300 out of 95,460 applications for child contact were refused. Doesn't matter if it is or not. So there's not even a veneer of caring about young men, no? Alright then. Men should not have their behavior dictated by a bunch of women whose knickers are in a twist. The heart of the issue. Women are telling you they feel uncomfortable at how a certain subculture views them, and treats them, and they try to change that. There were a good few issues about it when I was at university (I graduated within the last several years), and I remember this as a particular example that got people talking about it. Sure. When people talk about "survival rates" for cancer they're generally referring to the five year survival rate, that is, how many people are still alive five years after diagnosis. Usually the sooner you catch it, the easier it is to treat, and therefore the survival rate will be higher. There are some cancers that are very aggressive though. How did a society that "implicitly favours men" come about? You'd have to go back an awful long way to figure that one out. When civilised society came about, men put themselves in charge, and essentially owned women, children and slaves. It's only very recently that women stopped being the property of the men in their lives, either fathers or husbands. I'm curious how you interpret the (false)notion that the majority of rapists are men and that the majority of rape victims are women. You don't feel that there is a "war on women?" or that men create "violence against women?" Typhon, I'm out. This is ridiculous. Pulling words I didn't say out of thin air to put in my mouth and ignoring what I actually asked is ridiculous. How is any of this helping men? Also, I just saw your most recent reply to my other comment. Again, twisting the meaning of w…

Who determines the "best interest of the child?" Feminists? The courts do, typhon. The courts. Judges, people with backgrounds in family law, who know much more about the complexities of what's in the best interest of a child than you or I will ever know. hared parenting as an initiative by men to reduce child support or by male abusers to keep control over their exes. Read them again more closely, rather than cherry-picking certain phrases.

They became allies. ...what? Allies in what? Raping, not raping, being raped, not being raped? I really don't know what you're getting at? it was about seeing half of the people around me as enemies. If that's genuinely how you felt that's terribly sad, and I'm glad you don't feel that way nor view men as enemies anymore.

Sigh. Have you read any of these or just looked at the titles and decided that feminists were against shared parenting? Genuinely, have you read these? Because I can't find anywhere in it that explicitly states, or even implies, that feminism is against shared parenting when it's in the best interest of the child? Nowhere did the historical personages discussing women's conscription mention that women were unable to do combat or kill, just that they shouldn't have too. Typhon, the issue here is that you're not getting the concept of historical context. I'm also fairly certain that you don't understand what patriarchy theory actually is, it seems like you're working off some strawman version of it. If you don't understand it you can't argue against it without coming across as terribly uneducated on the sub…

I read about Selective Service after someone here told me about it, which is very interesting. I think that's what you were hinting at before but never actually told me the name of. There's no point in us going any further with this, neither of us are going to get anything from it. I think a lot of your points show a lack of understanding of the social and cultural reasonings behind why women aren't allowed to be drafted, and a lack of wanting to understand these. Thanks for sending me that, that's actually really interesting. I suppose I was being hyperbolic when I said many. There is one giant flaw with my country, and it's the way we view women's rights to bodily and reproductive autonomy. Our abortion laws are barbaric, and even though we passed legislation last summer so that the life of the mother is at risk, abortion may be performed. It's outrageous that women in this country are forced to flee abroad to have access to a medical procedure. All claims as to why women don't need access to abortion are ridiculous…

My definition of rape is presumably what most other peoples (and the CDC's) definition is: a nonconsensual sex act. The problem I'm having with your essay is that you're not talking about legitimate rape of a drunk person, where one person is clearly taking advantage of another person. You're talking about the fear of going to bed with a drunk woman, and waking up and being accused of rape. Those are different things, and they are concerned with very different things. The first one is concerned …

As a feminist, who moves in feminist circles and reads a lot of feminist literature and theory, I can genuinely tell you, 100%, that what you're talking about is simply not a "theory" entertained in feminism. Feminism doesn't tell people that "sex with any person who's had a drink is rape", and the one or two instances where people have heard that (and taken out of context at that) is from feminists who are usually seen as extremists. How do you propose that we reach that ideal though, without some sort of nudge in that direction? While I will give you that the pool is still more skewed towards having more qualified men than women, surely having gender quotas in place will encourage more women to go the whole hog, and aim for the top? I believe that women are as capable as men, and that to have the top positions being equal gender-wise reflects this. I find it absurd that 100% of the poopulation is represented by 50%, rather than 100%. I disagree, the pool from which these people are selected requires that you be highly educated and experienced to simply be eligible. Of course, hopefully over time there won't be a need for quotas, simply it will happen that the top positions will be roughly equal when it comes to gender. Gender quotas make me a little uncomfortable, but I do think the situation needs a little kick to get going in the right direction, and that this may be it.

Well I wrote that in response to the above comment which was stating (fallaciously) that women like "cut dicks", and feminism is about giving women what they want, implying that feminists like "cut dicks". I disagreed with his statement, and put that down to give a bit of background of who I am, and what my beliefs are. I could have done what's all over reddit these days "source: I am a woman and a feminist", but I didn't. Hope this helps explain why I typed what I typed!

Oh ok. It's such a strange practice, I just can't understand why anyone would choose to have it done to their child (by choice I mean non-medical reasons). I have two friends who are circumcised (one at 16, and one at about three or four) and they both say that the issues with sensitivity are terrible, in that it hurts them during the day from rubbing against their pants, and when they're with a sexual partner, they often lose their erections because they can't feel much with a condom. I just do…

Genuinely, as a woman (and a feminist), "cut dicks" certainly do NOT look hotter (perhaps because I'm European and circumcision isn't practiced here except for medical reasons, so nearly no one is circumcised). Out of interest (I'm asking because I know nothing about it), it's my understanding that male circumcision in the US is mainly a religious thing, in that Jewish boys are circumcised. Why are you not railing against religion rather than feminists, when it is religion that has, for centurie…

The largest movement that aims to reduce and eventually remove many factors described in OPs post from society should surely be backed by male advocates too? Suicide among males needs to be addressed urgently, and a lot of studies are being carried out and practices implemented, but societal views on mental health and stigma regarding gender roles need to examined and changed. The rates of male suicide are horrendous and add up to a ridiculous waste of life and potential. I don't believe that fe…

If you're looking to feel misaligned by scoiety then that's how you're going to experience things. In my personal experience, and the experience of most people I know, the world is not gynocentric and it most certaintly is not misandric. This is about equality for all, not just "equality" for men or women alone. I don't like the fact that many video games make me feel uncomfortable when playing them. I want to play a game where female characters are treated the same as the male ones, in that the…

They think if they invade all the male space we just stop being men, well, it's not going to happen. By saying that you're implying that all men are closet misogynists who love to make rape jokes? That's pretty offensive, most of my male friends would take a lot of umbrage at the idea that they need a "space" in which they can make rape jokes without upsetting the wimmin. Real men don't suddenly become their true selves when women aren't around, they are themselves all the time, and that self em…

As a European I find American politics incredibly strange. Also, for a country that is seen to be forward-thinking and liberal and that, both of the main parties are conservative by other standards. I met a wonderful American woman studying for a masters in European policy over here, who is very much a Democrat, and what I found puzzling was that her views were much more right wing than mine, and over here I'm barely left of centre. I wonder where the idea that the left is the enemy arose in Ame…

Word of the wise for OP, if you use any of what IcarusLived in an argument with anyone you're going to automatically: lose, insult them, and sound like you haven't taken the time to think critically about these issues. Do any of his rebuttals to what your friend said sound reasonable? When referring to women getting suffrage: To be given to women free of charge while those same women shamed men into enlisting to die at war. I don't even really know what to do with that. I mean, firstly, women we…

I agree fully with you, just so you know. I hate the way whenever you say anything that approaches the middle ground, let along anything that veers to the left, here, you get downvoted so no one else can even read it. It doesn't make any sense, and by going on and on about how there's no such thing as rape culture only serves to highlight how willing you are to ignore massive facets of society so you can feel justified in believing that feminism is a conspiracy against men.

gaming is one of the last remaining places that is based on male psychology and the competition-reward mentality, you take it away, something else will emerge. Making the change for gaming to be less male-dominated and more inclusive to females makes absolute sense. How can a company expect to make maximum profits if it continues to alienate half of its potential market? Also, what do you mean by "something else will emerge"?

Look, you obviously haven't read the literature, nor even sat down and had a hard think. Do that and get back to me. Women don't choose to go into these professions freely, which is my exact point. No woman who has options has ever gone into prostitution. I have no problem with people who have gone into a profession they have freely chosen, such as lingerie modelling or dancing, but you need to realise that not every "choice" is free. I'm not going to criticize them for that...why should feminis…

The problem is you don't have a high enough understanding of these topics to be able to succintly argue them. Displaying your ignorance while screaming "but they CHOSE to be whores!". A woman does not "choose" to "go into" prositution because it's feminine. Also, what does being submissive in bed have to do with anything? Are men who are submissive in bed displaying "feminine" traits? If I am dominant in bed am I being overly masculine? I would love to have a chat with you about feminism, but I'…

I'm afraid I don't know, I haven't spent any time on it. Unless the subreddit is populated by extremists I would highly doubt it! Men's rights issues are extremely important and need to be addressed too. True feminism holds both as being equally important. Edit: Sorry, I didn't see the edited version of yours. Equality definitely should run both ways. Absolutely if women have an advantage because of their sex, that shouldn't happen. For example, the absurd difference in maternity and paternity l…

I'm falsely telling you how I feel? Right. Also, you don't seem to understand these disorders. I don't want to debate you as I'm fairly certain you're going to turn everything I say into an accusation of being mentally ill. As another aside, I'm going to guess you immediately presumed I was a woman, which is why you've implied I have a personality disorder. Would have said that thinking I'm a man?

....are you trying to say that you think all domestic violence charges are a mass conspiracy designed to undermine men? Seriously? If you don't understand what feminism is, don't harp on about it like you do. It makes you sound like one of those old fogies who don't think evolution is real, and that fossils are a big conspiracy theory. Think about what you're saying you believe to be true of women. Right. No idea what feminism is at all. Also, as an aside, the fact that you are implying that a movement that includes victims of sexual assault as being mentally ill is sickening. I'm guessing you think women already have fully equal rights and are simply trying to remove mens rights to claim them as their own, all the while taking massive dumps on men's rights. You come across as a woman hater, and I'm not going to lie, it's shit scary.

I would suggest that you read into and make your own opinions, a lot of people here are biased and ignorant and don't understand the topic. Feminism concerns equality, for both men and women. It is about both sexes being entitled to equal pay, equal job opportunities, equal childcare, equal rights to custody, and removal of rape culture. Discrimination against either sex is incredibly negative and drags society down. Feminism is about both sexes being entitled to the same things. It isn't scary …

Does no one think it's ridiculous to say that women who want both men and women to be treated equally are best presumed to have a personality disorder? Reading through these comments is a horrifying reminder of how pervasive misogyny is. And of how misunderstood feminism as a concept is. Feminism is about equality, for both men and women. Women should get the same pay for the same work, have the right to live their lives without the fear of being sexually assaulted, among other things, and men s…

Yeah this does happen, but when it's portrayed as something that happens regularly it's incredibly damaging. The number of false rape claimes are astronomically small. Conviction rates for rapists are seriously low too, and many rapists reoffend. Putting the idea that most rape claims are false is dangerous, as it can often shame victims into not reporting a sexual assualt (both male and female). There should be more people flabberghasted at how low the reporting and conviction rate for rape is,…
