I feel like there are a lot of posts on trp about power in the abstract. Imo this stuff only really matters in the situations where you're competition with others for the same goal. your career, for example. Then it's sort of easy to see obstacles if you specifically know what you want. But if it's just some petty dickhead in your day to day, who cares why they're a petty dickhead. not like there's any reason to remain close.

This is solid advice. I would just add, don't let anyone tell you the personal boundaries you see fit are wrong minded. The common criticism is that you are too emotionally closed off and harming yourself for not letting any and all women waltz right into your full confidence. I get the OP and your point. Not sure you get mine. Valuing yourself and your agency in the world is obviously critical, but narcissism and being real are mutually exclusive traits. It's a funny thing that retelling a positive event like this has a shade of shame, like it has crossed a line into gay territory. This is actually a modern boundary. If you read correspondence between guys in the 18th-19th century, they were remarkably intimate. Back when I was in college & waited tables, older women were aggressively forward. However most women seem to age hard and fast. you can tell some of their bodies are being held in shape by their clothes. If you do meet someone hot and older, it's worth trying though. I imagine it's also lonely to sacrifice your ambition and risk taking for the stable job you need to support a family. this is an interesting response. Freakonomics had an episode exploring this. There were two things I remember them suggesting. Among middle class, there is a "nothing left to blame it on" mentality. If you have always been poor, you can blame unhappiness on your situation. If you are better off and unhappy, you are more likely to blame yourself and internalize it. it almost makes the connection about a lack of positive identity given to a group. but skews more towards 'people killing themselves'…
