Just got served divorced papers today. Any advice would be helpful.Don’t pay down any debts, don’t spend any more money on home projects or improvements to anything. If the tires on the car have some life left, leave them. You might think you know how everything will be split, but you may have to part with something that doesn’t make a lot of sense, just so the numbers add up. Get really familiar with your finances, if you’re not already. Get a plan in place for worst case scenario and you’ll feel a lot more at peace through everything. I was 90% sure I knew wh… | /r/Divorce_Men | 21/05/21 12:04 AM
Post divorce relationship timingIt’s perfectly normal to not want to commit to a second marriage a year out from a divorce...What you should feel or how long you should feel that way is up to you. You’ll feel it until you don’t. She needs to understand that and should, being in the same boat basically.. You’re not comparing HER to your first marriage, you’re comparing a second marriage to your first marriage. You crash a plane, you probably won’t want to fly for a while. Doesn’t matter if your first plane was shit and someone … | /r/Divorce_Men | 16/05/21 03:27 AM
Pre divorce filing phase - any gotchas ?If you haven’t even filed yet, there’s no reason you can’t pay your friend from your joint account. But you probably shouldn’t go paying off any debt. Less debt might just raise your ability to pay her even more alimony.. I bet you’d be better off ‘agreeing’ to take full responsibility for that portion, during mediation or something. | /r/Divorce_Men | 02/05/21 01:55 PM
Just talked about divorce. Afraid right now. Help?A 3yr old isn’t going to know what’s going on. I mean, they’re smart enough to know somethings different but not in the way an adult or older child does. They can tell what treating someone like shit looks like though. So don’t do that. And hopefully she won’t treat you that way either. As far as her family, if they’re the type to hate you by default, just due to the divorce, you can’t do anything about it. So thank god you don’t have to go to Christmas and thanksgiving with them anymore. If the… | /r/Divorce_Men | 02/05/21 12:40 AM
I am a 30 year older man Recently separated and trying to understand my chances at finding loveDuuude... I barely felt the urge to read that, but I’m glad I did. Real eye opener bc I’ve felt like maybe I was ready to date for a while now. I’m probably the “1 bj away from clearing closet space for her” type and looking back at any past relationship- the “ignores red flags and paid the price” guy..right here. | /r/Divorce_Men | 20/03/21 10:22 PM
Being Bought Out of HomeYea what about that 5yrs worth of mortgage payments you get to make? If it’s say $1000 a month, 2yrs into a 30yr loan, that’s what.. 200 worth of principal per month? 12k more that you have to split with her after 5yrs? Or are you splitting only the proceeds you get that are above and beyond what you owed at the time you divorced? I bought my ex out by taking on our other debts that happened to equal what we decided was half of her equity in the home. You should entertain the idea of it. What’s … | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/03/21 02:24 AM
Unresponsive AttorneyGo into their office to speak to them. If they’re busy, wait. That’s ridiculous. If they say there’s appointments ahead of you, tell them great you’d love to speak to those people in the meantime lol. | /r/Divorce_Men | 05/03/21 12:23 AM
Home Custody evaluation MondayDepending on their age, you may want to make sure any bookshelves, tall dressers, etc are secured to the wall. I think a lot of them come with these small safety straps nowadays. But even more primitively secured, in a reasonable manner, I’ve always thought was better than nothing. Just guessing but, seems like one of those things that can be easy to forget, until you see your kid start to climb one. | /r/Divorce_Men | 14/02/20 03:36 AM
Told wife I want a divorce. Why’s everyone on this subreddit always trying to convince other people to try harder or go to counseling again? Seems like no matter what OP’s say, there’s always a handful of people commenting, acting like they haven’t tried hard enough. They’re normally here from having previously made life decisions like that- out of fear. I say fuck that, get out while it’s still easy. Once you have kids it’s way worse. If you’re unhappy enough to think this way now, no damn counselor or medication is going… | /r/Divorce_Men | 13/02/20 02:47 AM
Lawyer bails outOh, and since you asked for recommendations to compromise- (sorry got distracted because I’m angry for you lol) what my ex and I did, in mediation too, was agreed that ‘no alcohol was to be consumed in the presence of the child’. THAT was reasonable, considering her history of neglecting our child because of her alcohol abuse. You could try something like that, if she claims your girlfriend has some sort of drug or alcohol problem. If she just claims you just have bad judgment or something- agai… | /r/Divorce_Men | 06/02/20 12:05 AM
Lawyer bails outMan you need to stand your ground on this one. That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Assuming she has no good reason, like evidence of you putting your child in a dangerous situation, or you or your girlfriend are drug abusers or something, she doesn’t have a leg to stand on if it went to court. She’s just pissed and manipulative. One more way to ‘get at you’. Presumably because there’s no other legitimate way. Do not agree with her on any sort of limit to that. You are not guilty un… | /r/Divorce_Men | 05/02/20 11:52 PM
Lawyer bails outHe’s not claiming it’s absolutely necessary right now. He doesn’t want to be under a court order to never allow it. That’s a huge difference. | /r/Divorce_Men | 05/02/20 11:45 PM
Child supportYou do have a point there. That’s actually the case with my other child. Yet it still didn’t cross my mind as an option here, until you said it. Maybe because there were a lot of safety concerns with that one being with his mother. This time there’s none of that. She’s a good mom. There’s no real concerns, I don’t think, on either side. Ive talked to so many people about this whole thing, and not a single one has brought up what you said. Goes to show how we all still just assume that the dad is… | /r/Divorce_Men | 20/01/20 11:29 AM
Child supportThanks for all that info. If my state has something similar, some of those may apply to the situation. I do have another child from before the marriage. So does she. And I can’t move where she’s going without taking him away from his mother here, changing schools, putting her in the same position that I’m trying to avoid I guess. | /r/Divorce_Men | 20/01/20 03:40 AM
