A good analogy I saw somewhere: if sex work is like any other work, then there’s no difference between your boss asking you to suck his dick or bring him a sandwich from the nearby store - both are simply requests to do something outside of your job description.

I know this isn’t always the case, but personally I unfollowed a couple of good friends whose insta posts I started to find not to my taste over time. I like these people a lot and they’re great IRL, I just didn’t want to be subscribed to their photo feeds any more.

Yeah, it was Kimberlé Crenshaw who coined the term. She wrote a case study focused on Black American women and their legal treatment. Now, it’s pretty diluted and got away from its roots - she said herself: She compared the experience of seeing other people talking about intersectionality to an “out-of-body experience,” telling me, “Sometimes I’ve read things that say, ‘Intersectionality, blah, blah, blah,’ and then I’d wonder, ‘Oh, I wonder whose intersectionality that is,’ and then I’d see me …

Oh god, that’s so scary. Thank fuck you got away! I once had a guy show up in a completely different car (model, plates). He had some weird excuse for that. When I said I’m not getting in, he scoffed “oh, like I’m going to kidnap you or something?” Fucking asshole. Always check the plates!

I believe it! Framing consent like an immutable contract you sign off on and have to carry out is designed to make a woman feel guilty if she wants to stop - like she's taking back a gift she gave. Real, enthusiastic consent is more like an app running in the background before & during sex, receiving updates and sending out notifications accordingly. A loving partner will want to be in sync with you and know you're both genuinely enjoying every moment.

Ew, he’s trying to sound like a motivational speaker. Notice how in every sentence he makes it clear that agreement comes first and then the act - if you hate the act and want to stop, you’re backing out of an agreement.

Seriously, I went without friends once in a club and got my arm grabbed by a huge drunk man sitting with his equally huge and drunk friends. He wouldn’t let me go until or take no for an answer to his drink offer until I said I needed to go get a friend and we’d both come back. As if!

Yeah this isn’t even a red flag, it’s straight up the problem itself. A pet is someone you care for and treat kindly, not jab in the face. That poor dog :(

I wonder if he applies his standard to himself. How many lazy, insecure, messed-up, difficult, moody women has he saved?

Seriously, “discarding” makes it sound cold and cruel but he’s talking simply about not having a relationship, romantic or friendly. I haven’t seen anyone here advocating for cruelty, mind games, mockery, anything other that not getting involved with men deemed not worth time. He finds this toxic because he believes he’s entitled to it. “No saving him” mate save yourself, no self-respecting woman is in the business of saving men.

Even if that bullshit was true... it says a lot about a man if he has to pay a woman to tell him what he wants to hear. How warped do you have to be to portay that shit in a sympatethic light?

Don’t say anything. You don’t want this man holding a grudge against you, and chances of his gf trusting you/an anonymous source over her extremely clever & manipulative bf are slim to none. It sucks, but you need to keep yourself safe first. Look up “grey rock” technique, it could be helpful. The gist of it is, if you want to get sn to leave you alone without angering them, become as boring as possible so they lose interest.

I hate it when spiritual people tell me that “everything happens for a reason”. Like I’m supposed to see tragedies and injustice as necessary and think “maybe I don’t see how this is great because I’m not enlightened enough? Fuck that noise. Good on you for leaving that shit behind.

Plotting is good, yeah! I recently switched from "I'll never be able to..." to "well, maybe someday, it could happen if..." and it's made a noticeable difference in my general mood. The truth is ... if I “failed”, I would be pretty much where I was before. I’ve been there before and I can pick myself up again. True <3 I don't think I ever considered that, and it's a really uplifting thought.

I associate waiting until marriage with religious types, specifically with Catholicism which I’m most familiar with - and since such religions are at the core misogynistic, so are the men who follow them. Personally I wouldn’t date a religious man (any religion, or spirituality tbh) and I’d set the bar for sex at “complete trust”. Like, can you be sure he’ll stop not just when you say “wait, stop” but at the first sign of your discomfort? That he won’t take advantage of you and disappear? That h…

Congratulations! You’re amazing, and this post really brightened my day. Basically, PLEASE DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP FOR YOUR PAST ACTIONS. This is the hardest bit for me. I veered off-track myself and I’m still having a hard time sometimes not resenting myself for past mistakes and letting go of what-could-have-beens. You also made a great point about latching on to more “interesting” people and the need to differentiate between the superficial and the actual work on yourself. Something to remembe…

Nahh. “Checking out to a small degree” would be noticing a gorgeous person in the street and forgetting about them two seconds later, not buying nudes. “All men are as bad as me” is what the worthless cheaters tell you to dissuade you from looking for a decent man. They exist, even great ones do :) but it’s a Gaussian distribution, like pretty much everything in nature!

Same. Also lots of pickemes gloating about how they don't have ugly stretch marks or saggy breasts or whatever and bragging how rude they are to random mothers.

I read it as him comparing his childhood when boys and girls all hung out together and adulthood when things are different and there are more depressing social mores and assumptions in play.

Yeah, and it sucks that we may be missing out on some genuine friendships with men - but better safe than sorry. I'm warm and friendly with women and gay men, but only courteous and boringly polite with men I don't know. Too many of them interpreted smiling and joking as flirtation.

Another tip for salary negotiations: agree to go a bit lower but ask them to set the conditions you'd need to fulfil to get a raise (or a couple of incremental raises) to an even higher salary. Have these written into your contract, then work to fulfil them. (A friend negotiated like that and they clearly expected her to take like two years to fulfil the requirements; it took her six months.) Don't ever drink alcohol at work events, no matter how "fun" the company is. And stay away from too-"fun…

Probably a jelaous type who’ll accuse you of “acting like a slut” because a random man looked at you on the street and it’s your fault. Less likely, but could also be someone who got cheated on and is still bitter about it. Avoid either way.

It's not just you. I saw a Catholic program at my mum's recently where a priest was talking about providing "couples therapy" which involved telling women a story about a mother whose children were killed and who forgave their killer. Then he'd ask them "well if she could forgive the killer of her babies, can't you forgive your husband for cheating/mistreating you?" He bragged about his high success rate (i.e. women would give in, feel ashamed and stay married). I'm not going to tell you to turn…

I wanted to suggest r/truelesbians (I've seen it recommended before) but I just saw that it got axed in that recent banwave too. I'm sorry :(

Also, if you ever travel with him anywhere, have the means to get home by yourself just in case (your own car, enough money for a plane ticket, etc.)!

Fuck, that’s so scary. I’d have been terrified too, and I don’t have your history. (If you have the means and the will, consider getting a large dog. It’s so satisfying when I walk mine at night and see men crossing the street to avoid us. )

Yeah, good point. Sex ed for teens often seems to be either non-existant or promoting porn/BDSM as something normal and healthy and fun. Not to mention shit like Teen Vogue publishing a guide to anal sex. (Note how their drawing of female anatomy doesn't even bother marking where the clitoris is.)

I keep seeing people saying "it's about female sexual pleasure! it's empowering!" but there's a bunch of lyrics like spit in my mouth // I wanna gag, I wanna choke // I'm a freak bitch, handcuffs, leashes // You can't hurt my feelings, but I like pain. How does being spit on and in pain and choking make you powerful?

He is always very worried about not accidentally hurting my feelings and often asks if everything is ok. It’s a little annoying, but I still think it’s mostly a sign that he cares about me. I think he might be doing that so you keep saying "it's all good", to establish a track record of sorts. So if you ever bring up a problem he can say "but baby, you're always saying how happy you are".

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
