That's an interesting theory, but they did account for non-disclosure by actually testing them: In the study, 24,107 participants between the ages of 50 and 104 (average was 72) were assessed every year for as many as 18 years. Each time, they took neuropsychological tests of cognitive status and they were also evaluated by clinicians.

The problem with the show is that it is TREATED as if it’s a documentary. Even more, an insightful examination that shows all. I agree with this. Even centrist-dad-extraordinaire Alastair Campbell said a similar thing on his podcast. I also think the "death of the author" has the capacity to create new "truths" out of things, particularly popular media. I think the claim of propaganda is stretching things a bit, as I don't think the storytelling of the show was pushing anything other than the tr…

I guess what I'm saying is "major release causes explosion of media coverage" is easy to confuse with "shady organisation embedding anti-male propaganda to make it easier for governments to do more oppression". I didn't know Bates vs Post Office was a thing until it popped up in the political discourse and suddenly the government was lurching ahead with compensation for victims. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_Bates_vs_The_Post_Office Is that a conspiracy? No, it's just TV being influential.

Not true - there's a moment when the two cops come to see that all the kids in the school are neglected to a certain extent or other. As viewers, we've seen it right in front of us for like 40 minutes by that point. From the lazy new teacher to the kind-hearted-but-oblivious lower school guide, the fact that they're all watching videos, how nobody acknowledges that Adam being picked on constantly is just normal. The disruption to lessons with the fire alarm, the fight, the mockery. Imo the third…

a show I only heard about 3 days ago and how some people are suggesting or actually making policy based on a work of fiction The creator is a legend. Here's his wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Thorne His work makes headlines all the time. He had two top hits on Netflix this year already. It being discussed as a major part of 2025 pop culture is not a surprise.

The show doesn't paint anyone in any light. It's incredibly nuanced and a lot of the takes in this sub are weird overreactions. It's like nobody watched it and only read headlines. Sure, if the government takes action, the action will not be conducive to protecting boys from bad influencers, I won't disagree there. The series itself though, really thoughtful and powerful.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/aug/18/extreme-misogyny-to-be-treated-as-form-of-terrorism-under-government-plans The Argus didn't issue a correction, but the Guardian did: This article replaces an earlier version of 18 August 2024, which appeared under the headline “Extreme misogyny to be treated as terrorism under UK government plans”. Gender bias, whether explicit or implicit, conscious or unconscious, may contribute to LEOs failing to conduct thorough investigations of reported crimes; misclassifying cases as unfounded or wrongly clearing them by exceptional means; failing to submit sexual assault kits for testing; interrogating rather than interviewing victims and witnesses; treating domestic violence as a family matter rather than a crime; failing to enforce protection orders; failing to treat same-sex domestic violence or…

If you have some technical aptitude or can just pull a rope real hard, have a look around for some amateur theatre groups. You'll always find kind, highly-engaged men building and painting sets, flying backdrops, fixing microphones, moving props around and manning ticket desks for community theatre companies. Finally, the statistics about single women and homeownership "only apply to a certain type of woman with class privilege," she says. "There are others — like those living in immigrant families, or multiple families living under a household — who are not included, who may require more government assistance to reach the same milestones." As far as I can tell, this is the only bit of insight in the article.

Absolutely. This as of right now is the best advocacy we can hope for: some important and poignant comments made by a couple of men, with belittling and sexist rhetoric from a couple of women. In ten years, people will hear the comments made by these women and cringe. "can you multitask?"

He succeeded Group Captain Elizabeth Nicholl, who resigned in protest at what she deemed to be an 'unlawful order' to effectively pause the selection of white men in an effort to hit 'impossible' diversity targets, according to defence sources. I actually read the article and have a nuanced opinion. I like the meme - especially the Ben Afleck one (not linked in the article but mentioned). It's a good template and a fun way the movie is getting hyped. I like the marketing overall too. It seems fun and dumb. I think anyone looking for a role model needs a nuanced and thoughtful appreciation of their flaws. There was a better way to have this conversation without it becoming a slanging match. This sub isn't the place for that sort of nonsense. For those of you who (quite rightly) despise the Daily Mail and don't want to give them clicks, the Guardian did a really good episode on the story recently: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/audio/2023/mar/17/how-eleanor-williams-lies-tore-town-apart-finally-unravelled-podcast There are moments when it feels like they're tiptoeing around her absolute culpability and sociopathy, but the journalism is sound.

The difference might be within error margins, or might represent different groups of people entirely. Depends how the question was asked. I didn't take part in the survey that produced these results but the website does make the primary data available. The difference might be accounted for with respect to a perception of power dynamic, or the rather common perception that only women can be raped. In any case, it looks like a tiny distinction to me.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates21/03/23 12:35 AM

The results of a YouGov survey from last week show that as far as the vast majority of Britons are concerned, women can both rape men (77%) and other women (80%). Older people don't believe as strongly in non-penetrative rape. YouGov has close ties to the UK government through its ownership via ex-chancellor Nadhim Zahawi and is not without controversy but is generally somewhat trusted.

This is the take, tbh. It looks like the only thing of note is the police should have kept all the information about the case and failed to. She still deserved to be treated as innocent until proven guilty just like the rest of us. Flak may not have been a victim (and I don't think that's implied in the article) but her mother certainly is, given she lost her daughter and can't even get the truth.

You wouldn't suggest for a second that nefarious people and organs don't take advantage of right-wing viewpoints like nationalism to pander to the easily-led. If a topic becomes divisive, it'll be used to Stoke division. "wokeness" is one of those topics. A lot of people don't like the idea of being kind to the downtrodden.
/r/MensRights26/12/22 10:43 PM
-29

Sure. To be woke is to understand systemic injustices, specifically the forces that have impacted black people in the USA, and be sympathetic to them in daily life. The version expressed in this sub is generally "anything vaguely against how I think", the definition promoted by pigheaded nonsense-brokers like Elon Musk.

This double standard is why we have protected characteristics in the first place. "I give discounts to women" is the same as "I give discounts to whites" as far as the law goes. Businesses are prohibited from discriminating based on things people can't choose about themselves.
/r/MensRights25/10/22 10:56 AM

It is likely that many societies support such a principle. Governments sometimes protect certain characteristics, such that policy should be “blind” with respect to them. Another popular intuition is that it is fairer to be treated based on a choice rather than based on something one cannot change. More broadly, surprisingly few taxes are based on characteristics that are hard to change. This is strange to an economist, as characteristics seem like perfect bases for taxation: they are related to…

The goal was sound - it was to provide 1. the presumption of equal custody in parenting during divorce settlement and 2. to raise the bar slightly for those demanding alimony from a divorced spouse. It was to remove the courts' ability to award permanent alimony and stopped them considering adultery in determining the award. There were a lot of other tinier alterations that were neither good nor bad on average.

Are you suggesting abortions are forced on black women, or are you suggesting that black women are choosing to self-genocide? I can't decide which is sillier. In reality, black populations are poorer and raising kids in poverty is super tough. Black populations also have higher incidence of absentee fathers, and raising kids in a single-parent household is super tough. On average, this will result in more abortions.

Potential counterpoint: those with ruinous student debt aren't the rich kids who would just go to university on daddy's money. They're middle class kids whose families made sacrifices for them but weren't poor enough to qualify for grants. Imo this is a major boon for what pundits call "the squeezed middle class". I watched videos from BBC and ITV. Both covered the issue from the angle of "does Depp's win spell disaster for women and children?" Claims of setbacks for the #metoo movement. Third-wave feminism has become a mockery of "left-wing" ideals, it is as "left-wing" as North Korea is a "democratic republic", just in name. This is the most important point. One of the interesting tellings of the Horus/Sett story has that after their altercation Horus chops off one of Sett's testicles. They both emasculate each other. Also when Sett's minions destroy Osiris's body they hide the penis: more emasculation. Then there's the undercurrent of homophobia around Sett, what with him being a cuckold and believed to be barren or unable to perform (associated with the desert). Finally, what of Anubis, god of the underworld who gets usurped by his own dead dad an…

It's only in my mid 30s that I've felt even remotely comfortable confronting my mental ill-health. Sorry you've encountered so many barriers. I guess it's hard for me offer advice or add to the conversation when I haven't even thought getting help was an option until recently, but can at least offer basic human empathy and listen. In short, we love you; you're doing great. I hope you find the right therapist.

I watched it (finished shortly before midnight so that was a nice coincidence) and it was pretty good tbh. I think this is the important part of the article: According to the report, just under half of sexual abuse allegations were regarded by judges to be genuinely believed by the parent alleging abuse but were believed to be mistaken by the court. Professor Young said the system dealt adequately with what she called the small number of false allegations of sexual abuse. She said that very…

The concept and basic idea of being woke is a politically-liberal interpretation of the status quo. The fact that some people who claim to be woke are also some of the worst racists and sexists doesn't change that fundamental idea.

You won't find any argument against that from me. I've been saying the same thing for a long time, often to vehement opposition! That said, the concept of woke is liberal, not necessarily right or left. You could argue the idea of affirmative action has socialistic overtones. Where the philosophy hits reality is where it intersects with the goals of the already powerful. Perhaps agenda is the wrong word for the above.

This is an odd take. Corbynism was no more populist than Boris mania. The current govt is the epitome of "try it and see what the polls say" populism. The narrative is pushed by the mainstream media (more-or-less owned outright by Conservative supporters and donors). I interpreted your original comment as suggesting you wanted to know if transgender folk exhibited hypergamy and how that related or compared to the cis-gendered population. Apologies if I misinterpreted.
/r/MensRights04/09/21 11:14 PM
1

No you didn't, I was just adding to the conversation. The entire paradigm around gender-relationship dynamics is different in the transgender community so the information is noisy or confused at best. After thinking about it for a few minutes, I can see the benefit in trying to see if AFAB trans-men and AMAB trans-women on average show traits consistent with their at-birth or their transitioned assignment.

I think you're imbuing the originator of the incel movement with your own hindsight's interpretation.
/r/MensRights04/09/21 08:52 PM

I'm not sure that's even relevant. There's a small subset of the population who identify differently from how they were assigned at birth which might give them a different perspective on this relationship dynamic, but that doesn't diminish the "on average" finding per se. There are always exceptions; sometimes a lot.

I think we're in total agreement in our attitudes and you've taken one bit of my comment to extrapolate an entire ideology that isn't there. Imho the "respect" that is decency reflects a person's knowledge and wisdom from their own experience. Even if they're not a good or wise person, you can respect them for any struggles they've had or lessons they've learned. Because of this opinion, I often find it hard to respect anyone with excessive privilege, because they're not an authority on the human experience at all. edit: hard to respect, not don't respect.

They're only talking about leisure consumption. The context, in my mind, would be that if men are already more likely to own a car for work travel, they're more likely to use it during holiday time. They may also consider "helping friends with stuff" to be a leisure activity. The data's quite shallow for how much work they put in. The meat choice is a good one to reduce though. free reign Interesting point about the left vs right, but I think you're wrong. Right-leaning politicians attack the left all the time. But more importantly, the people who control the narrative are right-wingers, which means in broad terms the left is allowed to free-wheel because it is never a real threat to those in real power. Not at all, because left and right-wing politics are extremely well defined and discussed, especially when it comes to tools of social control like fear, segregation, distrust. Idk, maybe it's a difference between American politics and the rest of the world.

Everything you've described is a right-wing doctrine: "us vs them", "it's class warfare", etc. Just because they call themselves Left, doesn't mean they are. The people you're talking about also advocate for social segregation with safe spaces for one privileged class. Right-wing ideology again.

You can help him control the narrative before it's too late. I know it must be hard for him to even think about, let alone come to terms with and deal with it, but he's at least got a friend who sees the truth of what happened. He can't be allowed to go to his gf and say he cheated. He must tell her the truth: that he was taken advantage of. F is a monster in a society designed to permit her actions by default. Yes, that's fair. And probably several times more excellent pieces by men disappear too, by sheer numerical probability. Nevertheless, I think people do want to hear music written by women. The sudden success of Hildur Guðnadóttir in Hollywood attests to the perceived value of the rare female composer extraordinaire. I would oppose the promotion and support for new music by women by positive discrimination, as that's sexist. But this is a themed CD. Imho it's completely fine. It's in the same ve…

This one isn't an issue of privilege, prejudice or persecution. It just so happens that it's way easier to find enjoyable music written by men because there are vastly more men writing music. It's a good thing these albums exist, otherwise these pieces would disappear into the noise. The 6 finalists for the radio 3 Carol competition this year are all men (by name).

Obviously this is all spin. Here's another spin: "Women more likely than men to buy gas-guzzling traditional cars" "Women ignore safety and environmental benefits of electric cars, perceiving them to be 'impractical toys' for men" In reality, every car-buyer is making their own decision in their own private way, based on their own requirements. The article makes the suggestion that maybe the 11% vs 5% regarding gender-based harassment could be down to the perception of some non-gendered insults being perceived as sexist: A woman who is called fat and ugly on Twitter is likely to see the insult as sexist; a man who has a similar comment slung at him will likely see it simply as a personal insult.
