Safe is a code word for an excuse to censor and avoid discussion / debate. Apparently someone writing about women's issues should be safe from being a victim of disagreement. People writing about women's issues are of course the only ones that have abusive comments on the internet.

LGBT is not for equality. It's about defending certain marginalized groups. If they would just stick to that, fine. If they are not interested in men's issues, fine, but they shouldn't pose as caring equally for everyone (or everyone to be equal)

Yes. I guess hearing it from Chomsky was sort of my way of saying censorship is not something the left supports in principle, or in practice any more than the other end of the spectrum.

And with conservatives. This has nothing to do with "progressives" in general. Men's rights is not a right wing/left wind issue. I am on the Far Left. Like Chomsky says, I may not agree with what you said, but I will defend your right to say it.

I think alot of MRAs would agree with you, esp on that last part (male self control). However, people are animals first of all, not rational actors. This is my personal view, not representative of MR. Women need to understand that men, and some men more than others, have super intense biological impulses, and these are not to rape btw, but to be turned on by women. Men do control this. Cat calls are just an expresion of this in what are the most agressive cases. And this is not rape or assualt. …

I wouldn't be representing this sub well with that response, because most will assert that men are rational agents, not primal creatures. But if you are not into discussion, that is your problem, not mine. Male desire is what it is. Men control it all the time. You won't get anywhere with a poor attitude, esp if you don't understand what you are dealing with. I'm just being honest with you. In this case learn to ignore it,appreciate it, or verbally stick up for yourself.

Tonight I was listening to Zeppelin's Black Dog thinking about this (look the lyrics up). There are times in meny men's lives when seeing a beautiful woman (esp provocatively dressed) hits you like murder (I didnt come up with that term to describe it either). It's a deep feeling- and I suppose it makes sense that the object of this expression feels that depth and feels threatened by it. But it's intent isn't harmful. It's like a primal howl. Depending on how desperate the guy is, the harder it …

Came here to post this link. Women close to me know how to handle themselves and not get themselves into dangerous situations. They also know men mean well with their compliments and they no how to tell a man a firm, polite, no thanks. This article is all about how men are creeps. That's some basic misandry there.

Mens Rights is not a Right Wing Ideology. I am a serious leftist who believes workers need a living wage (totally unrelated to Mens Rights) but also understands that Seattle and The Stranger have a strong radical feminist culture. The Stranger in particular has about half of it's content from radical empowerment feminists, but their politics is mostly spot on for this MRM.

I went to college in the late 90s. That was sort of the beginning of the transition to where a college education didn't mean what it used to. When my siblings started in the mid 80s it was just assumed that if you get a college degree in anything you would be fine in the job market. By the time I finished things were changing. So, at the time the investment didnt achieve what it was supposed to- gaining entry into the workforce with a decent salary. However, now the value of that investment is p…

If you want a job consider technical training, for example worker training classes at a community college. You will have your thinking and writing skills from college plus a technical education. Way better than theoretical grad school if you are just looking for work. Worked for me. For example, you can take some programming classes, start working in the tech industry, perhaps in a company that has a linguistic slant. Speaking from personal experience. All my friends with multiple masters and Ph…

As a philosopher, if you want a job skill study engineering or go to technical school. Education is valuable in itself. You just won't see philosophers shamelessly looking for external validation like this.

one day you may understand that reality is more complex than academic theories. i understand your academic "nuances" but go beyond them with pragmatism. someday you'll understand that the world doesn't conform to your ideals. you still dont understand the point of this thread. other people did. shit doesnt revolve around you bro.
/r/MensRights28/03/13 06:54 PM

Nope, if you do get it you are being willfully ignorant. I get your side. It's pretty simplistic. That's the problem. I don;t think you've moved beyond academic theoretical frameworks and it's very predictable. There are more nuances in reality than sitting in your chair theorizing. Just because you have a radical feminist viewpoint doesnt mean it is not mens rights, which I have demonstrated very simply that it is. Your willful ignorance and idealism again.

I am against "the monolithic nature of the concept of rape culture, due to the implication that ultimately all women are victimized by all men". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_culture#Criticisms Perfectly relevant and you just don;t get it. You just dont get it. I can't help that. Must be your VERY stubborn willfull obtuseness. Men are not all rapists. Campaigns like this blame all men. I was called a rapist for suggesting women should take some personal responsibility which is true. You can have the last word, because you are basically a psycho at this point, but I am on topic and in the right. I prevent rapes with my girls by making sure they dont do stupid shit with stupid people.

You are saying there is a rape culture in fraternities and women need to know that and to be told to stop deciding to pass out in them. Feminists are saying there is a rape culture in fraternities and that culture needs to go. Ok. Your "argument" is academic. If you want to play logic games, go ahead. mostly responsible? nope. didnt say that. i get the idea that one is not to "accept" "rape culture". that is the problem with theory on this. in practice i no way tolerate behavior like that. however, i also know it to be a fact of life that you cant change everyones mind or behavior. i dont condone assault of any form, nor normalize it, but i know there are plenty of people who in the right situation will assault, attack, rape, or murder. its what every one knows. and to be any more theoretical…

Not entirely. Being a man is not rape culture. However, I would be more impressed if they targeted their message to not all men, but the few who have an issue. And also, rape culture is not all there is to rape. Rape is not always a cultural problem.

Amateur? Like as opposed to professional feminists? I'm a grown man, an adult. I have learned how to avoid trouble. These academic radical feminists live in their heads. They do not accept practical advice unless it absolves them of any pragmatic responsibility. You are an asshole.

/r/MensRights26/03/13 05:37 PM

No shit. I don't know why people willfully resist the idea that there are circumstances that it is not advisable to get passed out drunk at. It's the willful ignorance to this that bothers the hell out of me.

No. Passing out alone around a bunch of douche bag entitled frat guys is equivalent to being vulnerable in a high crime area.
/r/MensRights26/03/13 05:33 PM

Yes, that analogy is perfectly reasonable. The people that don't accept that analogy are not truly interested in pragmatic reason, only skirting responsibility.
/r/MensRights26/03/13 05:32 PM

When women say men are the only ones responsible in these circumstances and refuse to take any responsibility of their own, blaming all men for rape culture, that is a men's rights issue.
/r/MensRights26/03/13 05:27 PM

Totally agree. What I got from my discussions today is the point that these "don't rape" and "victim blaming" campaigns are PSA's for the point of prevention. So my point is before the fact, like I think what the discussion is really about. How to stop rape? Well, one tip is to be careful.
/r/MensRights26/03/13 03:52 AM

that was actually quite readable. i get sick of people labeling other people as jerks. it was sort of like hearing how you overcame a culture of blaming to one of problem solving. this is a liberating potential in politics and religion. anytime a group or movement becomes all knowing and thinks they have all the answers and just sits around attacking others, that shit is done. it feels great to get out of that loop.

I do think a good response to those points is important to know, though I personally need to think about it also. I suspect that those questions are missing the point. As for "white rights", I think that inaccurately frames the movement. That is also a problem I see with the title Men's Rights, vs something like Men's Issues. Berlin is largely regarded as an essayist rather than a person belonging in one discipline. His most famous work is probably "The Hedgehog and the Fox". Yes, and that is exactly why I used it in this context. There is alot of news about right wing epistemic closure, but this is an example of it on the left. I am not attacking the Left (I'm a lefty) but am just pointing it out. Other writers have said, and I agree, that epistemic closure is not usually symmetrical across the spectrum. That is part of why I want to point it out- it is something we abhor in our adversaries and it is not something we (the left) should be doing as well.

In my experience, because of the heavy scrutiny MR is under, the discourse has become way more civil and thoughtful. Both topics are full of sensitive people and trigger words (Bitch, Cunt, Misogynist, Victim) can set people off. But generally there are many thoughtful, well balanced comments in the sub. edit;spellin, derp

old news. there's all kinds of publishers and fake users trying to game reddit. and they are trying to counter that. maybe offer an alternative better system how they can monitor spammy posts and fake users and you have hit gold.

Good example then. At least I think I have a better idea of where you're coming from. I'm more inclined to think that no one should be excluded outright- rather on a case by case basis a person must show merit or demerit for inclusion or exclusion. During segregation I'm sure that same like of argument applied to excluding people of color from integrated service. Equal opportunity. Now if, politically, people want to take shots at the left or right for their attempts at ensuring equal opportunit…

Sounds like a strawman to me. Human rights apply to everyone. Gender discrimination is not applicable the same way disabilities are. Do you think women shouldn't serve in the military?

It sounds like you don't believe all people should be equal under the law.

Fundamental? No. I think you are misunderstanding the point. No question all people deserve the same legal rights. That's more specific that "treating people the same".

With you except for that last sentence. Christ I hate the left / right shit people bring into MR. I'm a liberal MRA. There are conservative MRAs. MR is not made up of one side of the spectrum. Fucking hell. Liberalism is, among other things, about promoting political equality. MR is also about achieving political equality. The differences between the sexes I respect are not political, they are personal and expressive- the irrational parts. This is in reply to the idea that feminism validates fem…

Great job John. Take the higher road. Looking forward to a real discussion and debate with some reasonable people, not these hyperbolic extremists.

At least raise awareness without being a dick. Make some flyers contact some Dean(s), write letters. Even if you don't solve an issue yourself, use the old feminist tactic- raise awareness. It can be a good lesson for a college student. Don't try to change things overnight, or take it too far, but do something rather than nothing.

The definitions and people who vote for them goes to show they aren't interesting in being reasonable, respectable, or fair. More and more I see very plainly that MRA reactionaries (not all feminists) are simply projecting their own insecurities and hatred onto a group that is acceptable to hate.

I'm a bleeding heart hippie stoner pinko. And an MRA. edit: actually just a hippie stoner pinko. i gave up the bleeding heart thing around 19.

The lines are different for students as for staff. I think kronox sounds as if he is staff ("fired"). I am staff at a Uni too and have to be careful about how much of a scene I am willing to make (I'm not as staff).

Yeah, I don't think the focus needs to be on women here, just on how often men are often treated like suspects by default, even by other men.

first paragraph i agree with. especially the treating men like inhuman monsters part. second paragraph goes too far, a little over the edge. we arent looking at the fall of human society. just some shitty issues.

I would like to see those statistics (I upvoted you). If they are in the same ballpark, then I think both sexes should be treated the same. But if it's like 10/1 m/f offenders, then maybe there is a case. But I seem to think, perhaps erroneously, that they are on the same order.

fucking lame man. id like to think people like that are the exception, not the rule. the lady may have had good intentions, but was a total ass. in any case i sympathise with this. as a single 34 yr old male, i avoid having anything to do w children, in part because im constantly aware some crazy person would view me as a pedo. no way would i get involved in some big brother program or whatever, in large part for this reason. why would a single man with a child be more of a flag than a single wo…

this is hilarious. quantum sexuality means that women exist in all simultaneous states of victimhood and non-victimhood, regardless of the state of actual affairs. same goes for men, except men exist in a simultaneous state of rapist and non-rapist. therefore at any given moment the woman is the victim and man the rapist. case closed.
