For argument's sake, let's say that you are right. After removing all factors that are not discrimination from the raw gap, there remains a 9% gap that is driven entirely by discrimination. Why do we still see the raw 21- to 23-cents used in headlines, advertising campaigns, etc when it doesn't tell us anything about discrimination? You could fix the 9% "cooked" gap entirely, meaning you had cured all gender discrimination, but the "raw" gap would persist. So why is the "raw" gap being used as a…

Right, but the 21-cent gap mentioned in the first tweet is just the average earnings of full-time workers of each gender. It doesn't account for job position, hours worked, etc. Then in their second tweet, they say "When we account for all the various factors that go into pay...". Suddenly they would like to take those extra factors into account. So the issue isn't that women being paid the same at one company proves that there is no gap. The issue is that if they had used the same methodology i…

They don't have the issue of schools having their own often-biased quasi-judicial process for rape claims. Even a perfect system is going to have messy cases that end up going to trial.

"For arbitrary reasons" was meant to apply to "purposefully excludes male victims", not "choose to use". My intended meaning was that there is no practical reason why it might be helpful to divide up the victims by gender in order to tackle the problem. You are probably right in many cases, but the term is popular enough that I suspect many people don't give it much thought and simply toss it around as "the current politically correct term for domestic violence", which is a sad situation.
/r/MensRights07/12/13 08:28 PM

True, but "violence against women" is a euphemism at best and a propaganda term at worst. A female police officer being shot by a criminal is violence against women, but that is not what they mean. They mean domestic violence, but choose to use a term that purposefully excludes male victims for arbitrary reasons.

Pretty damning She chose some pretty strange lies to tell which could easily be proven false. I wonder if the crime would have gone undetected if she'd gone to the authorities immediately and simply said "I was out hiking with my husband, and he slipped and fell off a cliff".

Writing an angry letter demanding answers != FOIA request It looks like this should be treated as a valid request in the UK. See the section "Can a question be a valid request?" on this page. I agree that it could have been better phrased, but this case seems entirely analogous to their example about a bar licence. Edit: Also see the "What should we do when we receive a request?" section farther down on the same page, which makes the point that the angriness of the request is irrelevant.

Sorry that is wrong - requests apply to all Information held - and not just in document form. [...] I suspect pocketknifeMT is simply working from a broader definition of the word "document" than you are. They specifically mentioned email threads are a valid thing to ask for, for example.

I guess because people don't like it when it is pointed out that someone is fat. I'm sorry but being fat, in 99% of cases, is a choice. Unless you've got some sort of condition, it is a choice. You are right that it's a choice, but unless you want to link the fact that she's fat to the debate somehow, it's an irrelevant ad hominem. No doubt there are thin and fat people on both sides of the rape joke issue.

Interesting call. It's not fair to say she was completely unhelpful, and we don't know what the outcome would be if he'd followed up with the other resources she mentioned. It did seem strange how there were repeated expressions of concern for the son's well-being, but none for the caller himself.

Nobody is in favour of sex trafficking, as you say. I think problems arise because much of the push to end sex trafficking in the US is undertaken by sex-negative anti-prostitution and pornography groups who use ridiculous inflated statistics to paint a problem that is actually very rare in the first world as common, and the cooked numbers are then used as evidence of patriarchy. The result is messages with the same male-shaming tone as many anti-rape ads.

A "dongle" was originally a copy protection device. As an example, you'd buy very expensive software that would check if the dongle was plugged in and refuse to run if it wasn't. People could easily make copies of the software, but not the dongle. Over time people started using the word in a more general sense meaning "small doo-dad that plugs into a computer". In the comic, the woman (likely a stand-in for someone who criticized the Dilbert author's use of "dongle") is aware of the older, more-…

another factor to consider in all of this if that even though vasectomies are cheaper & less invasive, the number of men who opt for it is much lower than the number of women who opt for tubal ligation. It could be that this bit of legislation was meant to cover the most common and necessary medical procedures. Get more bang for your buck, I guess. I feel like you're trying a bit too hard to pathologise pregnancy here. But even if we accept that pregnancy is a kind of "sickness or disease" for argument's sake, shouldn't we be "vaccinating" as many men as would like to volunteer from passing on a debilitating, life-threatening condition to women?

It's unfortunate, but sometimes the best way to shake people out of their comfortable self-interest, or get them to see an issue in a new light, is to have the misery spread to a more diverse population, or one with more cultural sympathy. For example, once AIDS was perceived as something middle-class straight people could catch, it was taken far more seriously.

I could take that opinion and say "Any increase in the amount of government-ratified marriage is bad", and thereby oppose gay marriage, but that seems fundamentally unfair to me. Instead I say "I would rather government-ratified marriage not exist, but to whatever extent it does, it should be non-discriminatory". secondly it's obvious (and…

This is likely the quicker route to that goal. Advocating for adding women on the basis of gender equality sidesteps the issue of the morality of the draft altogether. Then after the draft system begins to burden women also, and not just "disposable" men, the public will be more likely to view it with a critical eye.

The progressive steps talked about in the article are great, but I don't think we can credit institutional feminism for leading the charge in that direction.

Women used to face judgement for wearing traditionally-male clothes. Feminism worked to ensure that women had more choices in their lives, including choice in clothing. Feminism doesn't seem interested in breaking down men's gender role barriers, and there has been no powerful men's movement working for decades on such issues, so men are still judged.
/r/MensRights07/12/12 11:09 PM
57

Feminism should care about men's issues, according to how it defines itself. The whole reason the MRM is growing is because feminism has failed to do so in practice. Their third point, about women being demeaned, objectified, and belittled, is most interesting to me. They knew that to satisfy their audience they'd need to link their topic to some sort of negative impact on women. And terms like "objectify" are often code-words thrown around indiscriminately to demonize male sexuality.

So saying that "Canadians" burned the White House in 1812 (as opposed to the British) is disingenuous. You attribute the burning of the White House to "British colonists of the Canadian territories", but you say they must be referred to as "British". What is wrong exactly with calling these people who called Canada their home "Canadians", regardless of whether or not Canada was fully independent? Following that logic, American residents of Florida must always be called "Americans" and never "Flo…

No, the British parliament could no longer pass laws for Canada since 1931 (Statute of Westminster). You're thinking about the patriation of the constitution, which happened in 1982. Up until that point, if Canada wanted to change its own constitution, it needed the British parliament to sign off on the changes. What's interesting is that full Canadian authority over its own constitution would have happened along with the other changes back in 1931, but Canada requested that it not happen becaus…

Canada is still governed by the Queen of England. That's why she's on our money, and why she appoints the governor general. Actually, the theory is that the Queen of Canada is the head of state. Which happens to be the same person as the Queen of England, because since independence Canada and England have been applying the same rules of succession. She doesn't hold power in Canada simply by virtue of being the English monarch. The rules of succession are updated now and then, and all the commonw…

Stripping and porn are legal, but there's still a stigma. Many people wouldn't want to tell their parents that they are a stripper. There are cultural stereotypes that strippers turn tricks on the side, are drug addicted, etc.

because a woman is decent looking she can expect to make enough money if she is not retarded to get a nest egg The stigma against sex work is what enables this. If it was considered a completely legitimate job, there would be many more sex workers, and prices would fall as a natural consequence of increased competition.
/r/MensRights27/10/12 09:23 PM
8

There are sex-positive feminists who have no trouble with sex work... For the rest, I think it's just a power struggle. Women still play the role of sexual gatekeeper compared to men. It's less pronounced than in the past, but a non-trivial part of their "market value" as a mate is derived from sexual availability, or the promise thereof. Anything which promotes wider availability of sexual outlets to men (prostitution, porn, stripping) diminishes that power... as the supply rises to meet demand…
/r/MensRights27/10/12 07:26 PM

I don't disagree with your main point, but there are good reasons to frown on bestiality, completely aside from its impact on the sexual marketplace (which I doubt is very pronounced anyway).

We shouldn't use a term that can mean what we want to say. We should use the real term. Most common words have multiple meanings. For example, you used the word "term", which has at least 9 major meanings. But I know exactly what you meant, due to context. Just like when people say "equality" here.
/r/MensRights23/10/12 11:32 PM

It seems to me that "equality" in the context of gender is meant as "equality of opportunity". As you point out, interpreting it some other way can lead to absurdity, but isn't that fact just evidence that you're misunderstanding which meaning the speaker is using?

I am not claiming that, just that Cshots is a version of Creepshots meant to stay a little bit farther inside the rules of Reddit, and which has little or nothing to do with actual lesbians. As you say, one set of submissions may not represent the entire group, but it can certainly validate an admin who's just looking for a excuse to shut something down.
/r/MensRights16/10/12 02:07 AM

Where's the SRS outrage? Right here. The Cshots mods are just bringing up lesbians to troll SRS.
/r/MensRights15/10/12 06:43 AM

If so, those rules were added later on or else not enforced (note the pic with "up skirt" right in the submission title). Even if the above was unintentional, Cshots has things set up such that every submission must get approved by the mods first, so nothing rule-breaking can slip through.
/r/MensRights15/10/12 04:02 AM

The sidebar and title of Cshots were different yesterday. The talk of lesbians is just the mods of Cshots trying to be clever and make a point. The reason Cshots exists and Creepshots doesn't, is because they tightened the rules (no minors, no upskirt).

He seems like a bit of a nut. He starts with some axiom that "the mother-child bond" is "the foundation of freedom in society". When the bond is strong, people will question authority, so the powers that be solve the problem by supporting feminism. Feminism breaks the bond, through convincing women not to be stay-at-home parents. There are simpler explanations for women entering the workforce in large numbers last century, which don't rely on some sort of conspiracy theory...

I think the guy was messing with her to see what would happen. I don't. Some people have very high sex drives, and it can put a lot of strain on a relationship when their partner doesn't keep up. If you're one of those people, you want to balance broaching the topic early (so you don't waste time with someone incompatible) with waiting a "respectful" amount of time before bringing up sex (so as not to scare potential partners away).

My problem with "Patriarchy" is that it's descriptive of an instance at a certain point in history, but doesn't cut to the core of the issue. Over time we'll see more gender balance among the powerful, but the oppression will remain. Being filled with men wasn't the cause of the Patriarchy being oppressive, and yet that seems to be the aspect most feminists are trying to remedy. Saying "the Patriarchy hurts men too" is just papering over one of the fundamental gaps in the theory.

Still, human trafficking is a problem and I'm sure there are frauds in all professions. It in no way invalidates the quite legitimate goal of ending human slavery in all it's forms. Impotency in older men is a natural function, too. Well, you could call death in older people is a "natural function" too. Normally we try to correct health deteriorations where realistically possible. Age makes impotence more common, but many men were sexually active into their 70s and 80s even before the advent of viagra.

You sarcastically assert that "Men must've been so wickedly oppressive back then" which implies you think men weren't oppressive at a time when only 4 states allowed women to vote and the 19th amendment wouldn't be passed for another 50 years. The inherited social order was oppressive, to both genders (but to different degrees). To just say "The men back then were bad people" is to oversimplify, I think.

There's apparently a traditional saying about this in the Bemba language of Africa: Umu kashana wa mabele ta langwa nshila means "You can not easily offer directions or guide a grown young maiden [...]". This saying implies that however good the advice is that you would try to give a young lady, it will be scoffed at by her. Schwyzer is a cock, but I don't care what his motives are here. It's an important message. Everyone agrees that the rape of women is a problem, even if they have differing ideas about what to do about it. With rapes of male victims, you're too often stuck trying to convince people that the underlying concept is even legitimate, especially in the case of non-statutory rape.

I'm sure "banned" does mean something specific on Wikipedia, but it also has a more general meaning applicable in everyday life. I feel that you either knew exactly what she was saying and were being evasive, or else the Wikipedia culture of "wikilawyering" has become so internalized in you that you have difficulty communicating with people who aren't level 20 Wikipedians with a +5 staff of bureaucracy.

I guess he's technically correct as far as Wikipedia terminology goes. He said the account was not deleted, and the "User:Magdelyn" that was deleted refers to your page, not your account. Seems silly for him to quibble over "banned" vs "indefinitely blocked" terminology, though. It's obvious from the context that what you cared about was the fact that your account was rendered unusable, not the specific means that was used to accomplish that.

It's less about the content of /r/jailbait, and more about politics. There are still lots of subs where you can find female "jailbait" pictures, and no doubt the admins are aware of some of them. I think the reality is that if you keep a low-enough profile, they will turn a blind eye to you.

I think most people here are just interested in equality. There are some exceptions. Personally I feel like feminism is a positive force in general, and has done great things. But from the perspective of it being a gender equality movement, it has failed men. In practice in everyday life, it is a female-advocacy movement. And I've lost faith that a single equality movement can help everyone. I think those who say "we should all be egalitarians" or "feminism fights for everyone" are naive. People…

I still, after all the times women have done it, cannot figure out the logic behind this. It's not really about breast cancer at all. That's just the excuse. It's about encouraging the idea that women are part of some special club by virtue of their gender. The attributes that we perceive each gender to have only exist in comparison to the other. So the other side of the cultural perception of male disposability or interchangability is female preciousness or uniqueness. The true goal of the Face…

What about men in the opposite situation, that is, a woman and a man achieve successful insemination, however, the woman chooses she does not wish to carry the fetus/child/egg/whatever to term, but the man would like her to? To be clear, what the hell does facially neutral criteria mean??? My interpretation is that it's trying to prevent discrimination of the protected groups through proxies, as was brought up in the recent car insurance thread. Something like discriminating based on where someone lives might look neutral on its face (facially neutral), but looking deeper it could be used to select against people who happen to live in areas with high concentrations of a given minority, for example.

I agree with his point that some conceptions of maleness are toxic and artificially limiting. One positive thing that feminism has done for women is to expand social ideas of what it means to be a woman, but that has unfortunate consequences when coupled when simplistically defining maleness as what women aren't. If you are here to be constructive then you are welcome as far as I'm concerned. But your "let's call out MensRights" post in 2XC does not give me much faith in that. The original "think before you link" submission was upvoted to the clouds, which I suspect is why Kloo felt he had to respond. Kloo's response is sitting at 53%, and the top rated comments are expressing their dissent. I respect Kloo for building the community, but if you want to argue that he's too paranoid and some of his behavio…

I agree that if someone is showing off their body on purpose, go ahead and look. And it's a shame that "Nice Guy" gets seen as a creep. But he pretty much goes off the rails after that. Men in 2011 know full well that displays of breasts aren't a promise of anything. And how he makes the jump from calling someone an attention whore to saying people shouldn't care if attention whores get raped is a mystery to me.

Putting aside the meaning of the article... You're here talking like this post represents the entire subreddit. This post was at 0 after 40 votes right around the time you posted your complaint to 2XC. The submitter has no other submissions or comments, so is hardly some sort of /r/MensRights community icon. And you're complaining about a perceived "downvote brigade" when you're the top-rated comment here at +15. So what really happened is, you saw a post here that you found offensive, and then …

Not sure how much of a revelation this is. Wikipedia cites a study from 1998 to say of women "over half had engaged in fantasies of rape or coercion". Even if this 2009 study shows an increase, it is not a giant increase. Note also Wikipedia's numbers for the prevalence of rape fantasies in men. Everyone fantasizes about some things they would not enjoy in reality. And even if you want to call false accusations "fantasies" of a sort, they are not in any way what these studies are measuring.
/r/MensRights30/03/11 03:50 AM

Several are cited here (see section III) in cases where the donation was made in an informal situation like this one. Some of them are even cases where the men were allowed paternal rights after the donation, which is at least consistent.

Yes. On a global scale, absolutely. In rich democracies, I'm not sure. It would be very difficult to quantify, and knowing the answer wouldn't change my opinions. Yes. Yes. I see a gap between feminism as an ideal and organized/political feminism in practice. Since I think many MR concerns are legitimate, I feel like organized feminism should either treat those concerns with respect and seriousness, or should be honest that the true goal is female advocacy (which would be fine with me and would …

Feel free. I've never seen it used before. The downside is that it probably won't work forever, because Cliffor deletes old comments, and whenever Google re-crawls those pages the evidence will be gone. The upside is that you can hit Google's cached copy to read what the comments were originally.

I feel like we'll never know if trolls are politically motivated or just see us as an easy target for the lulz, just like we'll never know if Cliffor is a woman or a man who had his girlfriend hold a sign for him to try to validate /r/mensrights fears of feminist infiltration, but those things are all irrelevant anyway. Cliffor trolled lots of subreddits. I do wonder if banning would be better than nothing. He's been known as a troll to the regulars here for months, but still sucks people in. I get this all the time from both sexes, but only from ones in cars. In my experience, when men yell things from cars they're usually trying to scare or startle you. Women seem to yell things like "please fuck me" or "I want to have your babies" before driving away giggling. I think it's just a way for them to highlight their sexual power. The intended message seems to be "I'm so desirable and I'd make myself sexually available to you, if only I weren't driving away. Poor you."

Statutory rape is a feminist creation because 25+ year old women don't want to compete with women between 15 and 18 The most common age of consent in the US/Canada is 16. Tell kids that masturbation is normal, and that it’s beneficial to work out a schedule that doesn’t escalate. Tell them to experiment with different intervals of say, once or twice a week, or even less. Man. Back when I was 15, once or twice a week would have been completely laughable. I think you'd just make your kid feel like you were an out-of-touch oldster by proposing that.

Dictionaries describe how language is most commonly used. It's not a value judgement by Merriam Webster, but a depiction of the way things are. If you use the word "sexism" in a neutral context with no other details, most random people off the street are going to think "discrimination against women". The more MR issues get discussed, and the more MR is not just seen as a fringe movement, the closer you are to the definition changing.

There are plenty of feminists who would argue that patriarchy is not all men collectively but a system, that it hurts men and women, that its name is outdated, etc. And plenty who acknowledge that "privilege" can apply to females also. I think it's counterproductive to alienate the moderates.

Personally, it's important to me that my interactions with sex partners feel genuine. So a lot of the language used in PUA circles pushes me away. The book Bang they recommend is offering "techniques", "moves", and "opening lines". Instead of just going somewhere else, I'm apparently executing a "venue change" move. I agree with you about feminists "owning" the issue of rape, and that men being rape victims is a serious issue, but I must say I don't think this comic in particular is making light of the issue. The humour of the comic isn't derived from the rape, and you could swap out the rape line for some other equally unpleasant situation and the joke would play the same.

The Koss stat is measuring something real. The problem with it is that it is not measuring solely what most people think of as rape/attempted rape, and that it is normally presented to people in soundbite form with no other analysis. I'm one of those "let's tear down gender roles" people, but I don't think there's anything wrong with the structure of your relationship if that's what works for both of you. The point is not to end relationships like yours, but to allow everyone the choice to structure relationships however they like. I love this video. I think it's very pro MR and I don't see the presenter as trying to shame men. One of feminism's big successes has been in breaking down social barriers for women to give them more choice. Women can wear skirts or pants. A woman can be respected as a CEO or stay-at-home mom. She can ideally be chaste or promiscuous. She has the choice of being aggressive or a harmonizer. Thank you for this comment. I think there is a lot of truth here. One place where it's easy to see this difference is to look at how society perceives the legitimacy of sex toy use for women versus for men. As far as the word "pervert" as a shaming device goes, I remember reading a story a guy posted online, from when he was a teenager: His sister accidentally walked in on him masturbating once, and she called him a pervert. A year or so later he accidentally walked in on his sister masturbating…

I've had a girl start having sex with me while I'm saying "No, no, stop..." repeatedly. There were mitigating circumstances: We were in bed naked together fooling around. I was hoping to have sex with her at some point, but I didn't feel ready to go that far yet. I probably could have overpowered her physically if I'd had the will to do so. I must say I don't feel very bad about it. My point is not to cast myself as a victim, but if I told the same story with the genders reversed then people wou…

I don't see the OP bashing this woman apart from saying she should have to pay some sort of child support. Are you willing to let men opt out of child support as long as they are "desperately afraid and alone in the world"? Maybe she made the best damned decision she could for that kid. Or maybe she didn't. Maybe there is a father who would take care of it and doesn't even know it was given up, or exists at all. To me, the "safe haven" option looks like the equivalent of the "financial abortion"…

It says "based on a true story" right at the beginning. He's not trying to present the video as an actual recording of whatever original phone call it is based on.

I think a lot of the backlash is because organized feminism has been very successful at branding itself as the voice of gender equality, to the point where it has a political mindshare monopoly on the very idea. And at the same time, the most visibly popular forms of feminism have failed men at best and demonized them at worst. The mindshare monopoly is one of the reasons that so many people automatically marginalize MR as extremism. To those people, criticizing feminism is akin to criticizing g…

If you're unattached when you have your gang-bang, and you're living in an age where sex is decoupled from conception, I don't see what bearing promiscuity has on fidelity. I absolutely don't think it's a woman-only thing, but the topic is false rape claims, which is not really something adult men in general have in their toolbox.

I don't think the point is "women suck because they don't sign up", but instead "powerful feminist organizations, which lobby the government and claim to be on a mission of equality, conveniently fall silent on issues where true equality would not benefit women".

Does the gap really reappear over time as the current population ages? If wage discrimination has been slowly lessening over time, then older women are still carrying the baggage from starting their careers during a period of higher discrimination. In 5 years, it might be that the gap only shows up for women over 35, etc.

I'm not going to defend the term "rape culture", but why is it necessary that those activities lower a woman's market value, or that they be socially unacceptable for women in the first place?

I have to say I mostly agree with the Hess article. Hess is just examining one of the motivations behind false rape claims. She's not saying anywhere, as far as I can see, that "defending femininity" is a valid excuse for making a false claim. Just that in practice it is a motivating factor. There have been tons of articles on /r/MensRights highlighting women who have falsely accused others of rape in order to avoid some sort of embarrassment, so I don't see how her views necessarily oppose ours…

There is no such possible thing as unisex sizing. I completely agree with you there. There is such a thing as a unisex cut. Given those two facts, why do you insist that the adjective "unisex" applies to the size and not the cut?
/r/MensRights13/12/10 02:10 AM

Huh?? The term "unisex" must not be referring to the sizing, if it uses the same sizing as men's clothing. So my point was that when you see "unisex", it means "unisex cut (with men's sizing)". As far as I can tell your complaint is based on you interpreting "unisex" to mean "unisex sizing". But that is not what it means.
/r/MensRights13/12/10 01:37 AM

But "unisex" isn't referring to the sizing, but the cut, right? Men and women can both wear a boxy rectangular-cut tee shirt, but only women can wear a curve-hugging "baby doll" tee shirt. (Would you call this a "privilege"?) Your issues are likely all rooted in economics. They probably get more female customers by using the term "unisex", and people with extra-small body sizes will find they have fewer clothing options regardless of their gender.

The strange part is that she would likely get more money out of you in the long run if she wasn't sabotaging your career. Apparently hurting you is more of a priority to her than the support payments.

MensRights has a pretty poor reputation on the rest of Reddit, from what I've seen. It's portrayed as a sanctuary for angry, spurned woman-haters, and I think that has something to do with the phenomenon of asking permission.

I think feminism and MR aren't really at odds, and are complementary. I've seen crazy and harmful ideas called feminism, but there's an incredible amount of diversity of thought which is all branded as feminism. You can't agree with everything labelled feminism and still have a consistent world-view. You need to pick a flavour, or develop your own. I think all the complaining about "feminists" here reflects poorly on MR, and I mentally substitute something like "feminist extremists" when I read …

No. One can be both against pay discrimination and also skeptical of the wage gap numbers thrown around in the media. There is no need to pigeonhole people and assign them to the "good guys team" and "bad guys team".

Likely due to this part: Women just want equal pay for equal work. Is that so much to ask for? I don't see anyone here arguing that women should not get equal pay for equal work. The grandparent is trying to re-frame the debate so that anyone questioning the numbers is against equality. The rest of the comment is pretty underwhelming also. Limiting the sampling to simply "white collar jobs" is still an incredibly coarse-grained lens to be using to examine the issue.

That sounds like a terrible experience, but what does it say about rape laws in particular, or what would you change about rape laws to prevent it? It seems to me that the arguments he used to silence you would be applicable to any number of different possible crimes he could have committed against you.
