Mindset can be fixed by taking action. I've never been a fan of "just try to avoid thinking about it" or "see a therapist or take pills for it" when it comes to issues of motivation and low self-esteem. I find that the biggest problem with self-proclaimed "losers" is that they just need to begin doing something. Unless you've got issues of the medical kind, this approach should help. Fair enough. I do have actual issues and I probably just got a little testy. I'm sort of a relentless perfectioni…

My purpose in pointing out that it's not just a list is that it goes beyond that. Your mindset makes a difference. You could knock down all the steps on your list but if you're mindset isn't right, it's not going to change anything. In fact, it could even make matters worse. It's one thing to not sugar-coat things. It's another to say you find other people depressing and call a whole subset of people losers. Language makes a difference. You could have accomplished the same direct and brief messa…

I mean I get the sentiment you're going for here. Take actions and you'll see your behavior start to change. It's not always that easy. You said it yourself, depression is a real thing. Low Self Esteem isn't necessarily something we can just get rid of even if we are logically aware of it. Real problems exist, it's not as simple as just following a list. And btw, your last paragraph comes across excessively rude. You could have accomplished the same message with better language. For me, I have n…

That's a good retort. I've personally never seen the social impact so I stopped using it. But I've also had a weird life, so that's probably mostly me. It's a problem because I enjoy social events sometimes. I don't get invited places because I really don't talk to many people. I don't talk to many people because I had a demanding job with 50%+ travel for the last 3 years. I don't really use social media either. Again, huge time sink. Haha, most people from high school wouldn't even recognize me…

I've got some comments about that comment: What if you don't use snapchat because it is an attention-stealing waste of time? You still didnt address the problem of not getting invited places What on earth does 'leveraging social media' mean in real actionable terms? This is very much a YMMV. I think you need to give some credit to SF and the Bay Area itself. It's an open friendly culture with people moving there all the time.

Not really, no. Although it's entirely possible that my opinion is skewed by a limited sample size.

So from reading this and you're linked r/tinder post? You're high and feeling the good vibes and dropping advice and gold everywhere because you can and you're happy and why not? This is the kind of ent I can get behind.

You're over thinking this. You're upset at your inaction, so start taking action. I'm the same exact way, but I recognize that I can't change anything by over-thinking it. If something does come up, you just need to be more aware to react differently. Give the girl more of a chance instead of brushing her off next week.

I told her that it helps me unwind. I said that I'm always thinking and my brains always running so fast that sometimes it's nice to be able to light up and let the world slow down for a few hours. I don't remember the exact words, they were a lot better, but it was something like that.

I'm not the best person to give advice as I have the same problem with honesty. I wouldn't say I was a huge liar, but I was very manipulative and secretive. Even though I'm really bad at being honest and open with people i want to connect with I know that there is a correlation between how honest you should be with someone and how well you know them. For Example: You don't need to tell a girl you just met everything about you, but If you've been seeing her for a while, you should be honest about…

I don't think you should hide it or wear it on your sleeve. If a girl see's you smoking or knows that you do smoke, be honest about it and don't try to hide it. At the same time don't tell everyone you meet, "Hey I'm jonicy and I'm a pothead" I'm seeing a girl right now who doesn't smoke and doesn't approve of it. One of the first times we hung out she asked me why I smoke and I explained why and she was completely fine with it after that. My point is: If a girl isn't willing to accept you and y…

I just realized that my crippling fear of showing emotion, affection and vulnerability comes from shame. Thanks for opening my eyes.

The thing I have never understood is how do you decide who you want to approach? I mean I see many women on my way to class but It would be impossible for me to just pick one random person to talk to.

I'm 20 and I used to have to have similar feelings to what you're expressing. Part of the problem for me was that I was taking my new college friends and expecting them to be exactly like my really close friends in High School were, and that was just the wrong way to approach things, as everyone is completely different. My friends in High School were Smart, Geeky and we all played DnD Together. My friends in College are more spontaneous and ridiculous ranging from Ridiculously Fun Stoners, uniqu…

I like your idea about pre-concieved notions of people, I was actually thinking about this last night. The qualities we actually want in people are much deeper than a simple checklist and you cant approach that logically. Its not a checklist or a set of criteria. Granted there are somethings about people that absolutely are obvious and either make or break the deal. But the bottom line is, attraction is a feeling, to be felt, in my mind its only destructive to think about it logically.

I've grown to become very jealous of people with girls in their classes. You take it for granted until you get into only taking classes in your Engineering major.

I'm an ME Major at a school with a lot of girls but it amounts to the same in classes. My classes average 4 girls per class.

The key is not putting too much thought into it. When I'm in these situations and i am, often, I just try and say the things that pop in my head. Most of the time these things work but If I had thought about them more I probably would have stopped myself from saying them because I thought they were stupid. I used to overthink my words all the time and It got me no-where. If you spend all your time thinking and trying to think what line will make you sound as witty as George Carlin you will do th…

As cyniko said you can get away with really basic stuff, people in college just want to meet people, especially freshmen. I work at the Technology Helpdesk at my school and just basic stuff like Girls' majors, dorms, etc. can get a conversation going. It's more about taking that basic info and being interesting with it then actually having a unique opener. Example: ME:"What Dorm are you living in?" GIRL: "Dorm Blah Blah" ME: "Is that the one that looks like a prison?" Off the wall stuff like tha…
