I'd suggest the woman probably finds the kid's costume as a symbol of whatever he was dressed as... the idea of which she finds sexy... not the kid himself. E.g. if he was dressed as superman, she likes the idea of a strong, brave, kind, heroic man... not a puny boy. See my comment above - I'm pretty sure it's only pedophilia listed. I could check in the DSM book next time I'm at my university, but that requires effort :-) If I remember next time I'm in the library, I will, but I'm fairly certain I'm right.

Only pedophilia is a mental disorder according to the DSM-IV, and even then, mere attraction to children doesn't qualify for such a diagnosis (I had to write a paper on this for a Master's degree, so I've seen the entry directly). If I remember correctly, you not only have to be attracted to (prepubescent?) children, but it has to be for at least a certain period of time (6 months or more?) AND it has to cause you problems (not sure about this, but maybe depression, sociolegal problems, etc.)...…

16 is the age of consent. The law says a 16 year old can have sex, drive a 2-tonne weapon at high speeds down the highway, and even fly planes (from age 15). 16 year olds run entire fast food businesses, too. I wonder what this hysteria does to the bystander effect? If the girl fell in the pond, there'd be the disinclination to help which is proportional to the size of the group of on-lookers. If there are men in the group, does the disinclination for them increase at a larger rate? Could make for an interesting study.

I would want to help because it's the right thing to do. I can't look the other way. Society wants to be stupid about it and make it hard to help, but damn it, I'm a decent guy. If someone needs help, I help them. This kind of crap just makes it harder. I understand that government, the police, and society probably doesn't give a fuck about me, but at the end of the day, I have to live with myself and I wouldn't be able to have a clear conscience if I didn't.

Sadly, I confess that I didn't help once. I think a boy fell off his bike and was crying. I did do a loop around the block and check that he was ok when driving past a second time (he got up and was riding again)... but I didn't get out to help despite being extensively trained in first aid for that very reason. Irrational? It feels like it, but this news item doesn't make it seem so irrational anymore.

I think this "stranger danger" crap is dangerous. It ends up being about "bad men" and conjuring-up monsters in the minds of kids, without considering the fact that the majority of innocent, benevolent society gets labelled as potential monsters. Those birds don't give up until you get quite a distance away from their nests. Each subsequent swoop is closer until the bird claws/pecks you in the head, drawing blood (happened to me as a kid). Not good advice. Challenge her. If she grades you unfairly, use the official appeals process inside your university. Make sure you know your stuff inside and out, write excellent papers, and challenge her on stuff you know but do it in the spirit of academic debate. If she turns it into a nastiness match (not likely, I'd suggest) then you can point that out. Record your interactions (if legal in your area), write a transcript, write a paper on it and publish it in a journal or at least online.
