This whole thing has been a pain in my ass. I cut news and TV out of my life some years ago, including the political bullshit. It's slightly challenging once in a while when most folks somewhere want to talk about game of thrones or last night's ball game, but this is a whole nother level. It's damn near 100% of people want to get into it over this particular election. Pain in the ass.

I worry that any softening on your part will be hamstered by her and she'll view her power-play as successful. That's my thought, too. Shit test, comfort test... doesn't matter. Backing down on this and going soft at this point can only bring OP that much closer to whatever position he started from, not the captain's chair for sure. Maybe I'd make a singular, brief statement that I'd like her to come along for the ride, but she is an adult so she will have to make that decision one way or the ot…

Fuckin A, this came as such a surprise to me with my wife. She really has this tether to Mom, and it's... weird to me. I guess I just got lucky with my ex, who was estranged from her mother.

Try not to focus on the trip and let it derail you. If she wants to make the trip miserable, she will do it anyway so no point worrying about it. If she is being miserable when it's time to go, you will have to decide at that time if you want to proceed. I think there are good points to be made both in favor of continuing with the trip and making it a good time and cancelling it. Ultimately you will have to decide that, but not right now. If you haven't already, look here and elsewhere for the "…

Looks like 1-4 got answered pretty thoroughly, I have nothing to add to those that the guys haven't said here. My opinion, you should pay attention to the one answer that is unlike the others, from /u/theultimatecad. A couple things, you say? Are these couple things more important to you than the state of your marriage, which you say you can bear no longer? It sounds like you are trapped in a state of analysis paralysis and making excuses. Lift, learn to pass shit tests, and be mindful not to go…

I had to stop reading the comments by the time I got to this one (I don't know how to quote on this app): I saw a post 3 days ago of a guy who stuck a note to his fridge with a few things he can do to improve himself (quit smoking etc) for the benefit of "her". Presumably his wife or daughter. It really hit home for me. For two days now I've made an effort to keep my home tidy and the dishwasher empty. To walk more, for myself. To help take the weight off my wife's feet. I want to get into good …

I'm also a few years on the sober train, and if my wife pulled this shit, the only logical conclusion would be that she is looking to slut it up. She might say it's not and might even believe it, but it would be a firm no from me. I quit drinking and you're going to go tend bar while I play mister mom? Fuck that, fuck you, not gonna happen.

I was just thinking while perusing the comments that this correlates pretty well with job circumstances, you beat me to it. I remember being frustrated many times over the years when people would come in "off the street" and become my boss when I was a younger man. "What the fuck? This guy doesn't know how to do my job! He can just come in and say, 'Yeah dude I know how to be the boss,' and just be the fucking boss?" Yeah. Turns out that's a pretty good fucking way to become the boss.

I don't directly have a goal of never apologizing, but rather to only issue an apology for the most serious of mistakes. For me, a goal is to minimize the kinds of serious mistakes that warrant an apology. Kids tend to make a lot of serious mistakes at first, oftentimes warranting an apology IMO. Some of the stuff they think is OK would amount to theft, assault, insubordination and the like if the behaviors were to continue into later years. Of course this is all natural. It is up to us and thei…

Google "incognito mode" + pretty much any browser. There are a few apps for mobile, take that dude above up on his offer to recommend the best one. I disagree with the sentiment of leaving it open for her to see. People are allowed to have personal shit they want to keep to themselves. If you went to a therapist or a group for advice and support, you wouldn't bring her the transcript after. It's also okay to not repeat conversations from the mens locker room.

All of the above and something for you to absorb. Telling your wife you are going to the gym should equal you being on your way to the gym right now. Telling her you are going to go to the gym next month or whatever reeks of attempting to recruit her as some kind of cheerleader. Wives don't make good cheerleaders and cheerleaders don't make good wives.

Yup. And inbetween the cycles of politicians making promises or spokespeople talking about the broken promises of days gone by, it's some disaster. People love to start chatting about how bad that flood is in blah blah village or how whatever city 6000 miles away is on fire or something. "OMG you didn't know about that? Good call mentioning news and TV. I got rid of cable TV about 3 years ago. It is such a time suck and mind suck. Edit because of sloppy premature submission: I was really surprised at how people react when I tell them I don't have TV. People get all shocked and amazed. Sometimes they almost seem angry when they start going on about last night's prime time bullshit that they think I will know and I tell them I don't do that and prefer to learn some programming or get outside if the weather is nic…

There is not a lot of context here, but it sounds like she has become aware of changes you are making and a shift in the dynamic of the relationship. I think this is a good sign, but also that she might be winding up already for some huge shit testing. She says you have made it very clear, but it's unlikely that she is very clear about things at this early stage. Pay more attention to what she does than what she says. She is waiting for you to fuck up.

"Ignored it both times and walked off." That is the move. Sometimes you can A&A or amused mastery and it makes you feel great. "Yeah motherfucker, I win this round!" However, realizing a situation where that might not be how it goes down, you intelligently and with great restraint kept your mouth shut and remained stoic. There is more than one way to pass a shit test, and there's a lesson in this post, guys.

I am actually under the impression that quitting can be assisted by sharing. Not so much with the wife unfortunately, but otherwise. When I quit smoking, I took that temporary passion for quitting and built a website about quitting smoking and slapped some ads on it. I found the writing served as a great outlet, and that sucker still makes me a few bucks even years later. Keep writing man and just stick to your guns. It sucks for a good long while but like so many things, it's worth the effort.

My opinion, you answered your own question. If the goal is to improve ourselves, doing things the easy way doesn't further that goal. Facing the woman and saying what needs to be said is uncomfortable and more difficult than shooting off a text or an email, or having a buddy tell her, or sticking a note under her windshield wiper. The experience of dealing with this under the most challenging circumstances, face to face in real time, is tempering your frame to be stronger in future dealings with…

I like the subtle distinction here. "Remain stoic" feels more relatable and actionable than "maintain frame" stated by itself.

If she's arguing, her frame is referring to her view of reality, a perspective through her eyes where she sees a world where you are wrong, or should be listening to shit for whatever reason. Your frame ideally should be that whatever she is arguing about doesn't matter. Whatever it is, it's either bullshit from her that should not be entertained, or maybe you did make a mistake and you will need to resolve that in a manner of your own deciding. Either way, your frame is that arguing with her so…

I get good results out of, "If you have a place you want to eat, we can do that, otherwise we will go to place X." It doesn't leave room for that kind of negotiation. She can either name a place, in which case we will go there, or any other response = we are going to place X. Doesn't matter either way to me, but usually she goes with the path of least resistance, which is X.

I also keep my wife away from mechanics. Mostly I do the car stuff myself, but if a car goes in for professional work, it's better that the guy doing the work knows he is having a conversation with, and getting paid by, somebody who knows his way around the shop for the most part. Last time I sent a wife to a mechanic, it ended up costing me over $1000 for a ~$300 job.

I don't think the post you linked has anything to do with feelings of safety. That woman was simply pushing back because she was upset about the phone incident. In short, she was intentionally or unintentionally behaving like an asshole. So far as safety goes, if we are talking about a wife, yes we are responsible for their actual safety. Somebody has to be responsible for her safety. It ain't her. "Feelings of safety," I think is where things start to get slippery. To use the linked post as an …

The pause is a good habit to get into. A long time ago, I was watching a football game as a kid, and my uncle pointed out one of the players. "See how that guy stays on the ground for a long time after he gets hit, and gets up slowly and deliberately? He does that every time, so that when he does get hurt the other team won't be able to know right away." I never ended up getting into watching football, but I never forgot that lesson. Training people to expect a short verbal pause from you works …

So much truth. Most of us are old enough to remember when there was no such thing as texting. It was only a few years ago. It's almost expected by some people that you have to answer every text. You don't. Absolutely do not have to answer every text. She texts "miss u," "what do u want for dinner," "we should do xyz later..." you answer it. If and when you have time. However you want to text. The minute it starts to stray... the very first text that starts with "why didn't you..." or anything th…

Holy crap, mine does the list thing too. I just realized from reading your post that it times with the last several days before shark week. I made a section in my todo app and named it Mrs-Rygar's-Complaints. I didn't, I'm not going to, and I think it's fair to say the majority opinion will be that it's more likely to hurt your goals than forward them. This sentiment in NMMNG about sharing with your wife confused the hell out of me when I read it, as it flies in the face of a fundimental part of RP: Don't talk about what you're going to do. Do it. They are trained that way. Every TV show and commercial with a pregnant woman in it depicts it as perfectly normal for the woman to wake up her sleeping guy at 2 in the morning to go get her ice cream. A certain amount of extra beta comfort is definitely warranted, particularly during the latter half of the pregnancy or when things are medically or otherwise legitimately difficult. That is not the same as her breaking the man's balls constantly with incessant honey-dos.

It is often said that ignorance is bliss, and it seems to prove true. "Evangelizing," as you say (I understand what you mean), a red pill viewpoint is perceived as a threat to many. If one considers the analogy that each of us looks at the world through our own "lens," it makes a convenient way to understand why this is true. Many have been wearing glasses so strong that they cannot see without them. Over recent years the lenses have been getting thicker and thicker, the natural ability to see t…

This is a good post. My wife has been doing a good job holding up her end of the deal as a mother, and I have no reason to begrudge her her special day. Remember, women need this from time to time. At the same time, she isn't my mother so I don't get all stupid about it and put her on a pedestal. I don't think that single exchange is worth leaving the house over. It's your house, you should stay under almost any circumstance. My opinion, regardless of what used to be true, is to leave the texting be permanently and move on like it didn't happen. Great point, absolutely be visible to these people. I taught my sons that there's no need for violence, until there is. Well as a freshman in high school it finally happened that some kid started pushing my son, who told him he needs to keep his hands to himself. The other kid says something like "what are you going to do when I don't," and and tried to kick his leg out while delivering another shove. So my son knocked some sense into this kid, not on school property even. I end up in the princi…

Absolutely true. I play a bit of music myself, using what most musicians would consider a pretty crappy instrument I got for under $200 bucks a few years ago. It keeps working so I keep playing it. I would be a liar if I said I hadn't considered throwing some money at an expensive instrument, but I haven't pulled the trigger because I really don't need it. Holy shit this is so true. I spent a decade even telling my sons shit like, "If the lady of the house ain't happy, ain't nobody happy." It makes me cringe thinking about it. Of course the problem is that they actually have to treat the lady of the house quite differently than the teenagers at school, so I'm trying to keep mindful of that while introducing RP ideas to them in place of all the wrong stuff I have been telling them for most of their lives. But damn, this woman acts like she's happie…

Evernote is good for this kind of organization also. Syncs across all machines and phones (well not linux really, but nothing else seems to cover windows, android and linux very well either), and it also lends itself to having whatever kind of separation you want to use. Procrastination is a big issue of mine also. It feels like something I should have outgrown at some point, but just carried through adulthood like baggage. Pushing actions over inaction has made shit better with the wife, kids, at work and on extracirricular projects. While I have been doing well for the last 6 or 7 weeks, it is still something I have to pay attention to all the time and it will take some time for it to become a default trait.

I go with programming and rock climbing. Programming feeds the side of me that needs to close the door and be left the hell alone from time to time, while allowing me to hack together saleable things. Rock climbing for physical exertion and getting out with nature obviously, but it's also co-ed. Plenty of opportunity to keep abundance mentally alive when chatting it up with fit women who you are watching flex in some impressive positions.

It definitely screws up the dynamic. I ended up doing the househusband thing when my first wife got a phenomenal job opportunity. It directly and rapidly led to dead bedroom and her cheating, so I left and took the kids with me. Yes it would have gone differently if I weren't so ignorant and BP at the time, but that would have been because I wouldn't put myself in that situation. Tl;dr: househusband equals two thumbs down

The advice of the other guys here so far as actual action steps are more thorough than anything I could say, but I have one additional opinion: Don't get into this with her over text. I think the whole thing is a good idea. A well-worded sticky will definitely help some guys make better first posts. I think also that we should be mindful that the very nature of this forum is that new guys are going to have a lot of beta tendencies, and those most likely to answer are going to be rather more alpha.
