My path towards self improvement began with getting rid of some nasty omega habits. Way, way too much porn, gaming and social media.
I went cold turkey, quit it all, and it gave me a new perspective on things. At first it was quite boring, but after a few days I began to enjoy the many quiet moments I had during the day. It was no longer boredom but moments of contemplation, creative thoughts and planning. I could look back at a day spent almost entirely on productive or worthwhile things. I got more done, I was more social, I was improving faster.
I'm only human and I can't live like that forever, so I'm more lax now, but many of these activities I never resumed. They gave me nothing, and it took me a cold turkey to realize it. I never use facebook, never watch or read the news, never game.
A few months ago, I took another 2 weeks of no omega activities because some bad habits had crept in again.
The recent talks here about gaming, hobbies and distractions have made me motivated to do this again. And I have given it a name.
The Omega Reset
For a week or two, you do NO omega activities. It is important to cut out all omega activities, all worthless distractions and procrastinations or you just substitute one for the other.
So no
- Porn
- Gaming
- Social Media
- Reddit
- News
- TV
- Surfing
- Fiction reading
Cut it all out. Spend all your time being productive, social or learning (not online) - or just contemplating and reflecting. Get a non-fiction book that is not an easy read, sometimes you need to sit still or be quiet. If you have a metric ton of work emails, don't spend your free time looking at your smartphone inbox, that defeats the point.
I have a few exceptions: I still watch TV with the wife, and I read in a novel in bed before I sleep.
Try it. If you think you can't do this for even a week, meditate on the power cheap distractions have over your life.
