Don’t do it! You two are amicable right now, but things change. Just settle the divorce affairs and move on. Don’t leave yourself entangled with your ex-wife’s finances. There are 100 ways this could go south for you and only a couple of ways you turn out ok. If you are ever wondering if something is fair, just reverse the situation. Would she be ok with you staying in the home and her moving out? I don’t think she would.

What happens if the mortgage lender doesn’t want to let you off the hook for the house payments? I don’t think they will.

Yeah dude don’t do it. So much could go wrong with not selling the house. She could damage the home, she could refuse to sell when the time is up, or she could move her new boyfriend in after a couple of months and now you are stuck paying for it. Just settle all of the affairs now. You don’t know where you will be in life 5 years from now.

Screw that. She took all of the money and the home furnishings and doesn’t want him to go after her 401k. What exactly is she giving up on this divorce? My advice to OP is keep the dog and fight for you half of the money.

Yup, sell the house on the pretense that your new house needs some work or whatever reason you can’t move in right away. Get an apartment and file for divorce. She can’t keep a house with you paying for the mortgage if you don’t own one.

Maybe sell the house and drag out buying the new one. Get a short term rental while you wait telling her there are some issues before buying the next home. Then file for divorce or legal separation. She can’t keep the house if it’s already sold.

She wanted the divorce when she thought she would get the lions share of everything. Now that it looks more even, she is all about reconciliation.

We all know that the cops weren’t really too worried about the bad guy that forced them to shoot him. They believe he will be back on the streets eventually doing the same shit or worse. “During the chase, Best pulled out a 9 mm handgun, the report said. As he ran into a lot filled with disabled cars, the officer chasing him, Yoon Heo, fired his gun twice, striking Best once.”

Your only hope is to move to a state that doesn’t have alimony. Can you find a job in a different state and talk the wife into you going alone for 6 months and try to establish residency in the new state? As soon as you are a resident of this new state, file for divorce. If she is tried of you she might not protest. Definitely research all of this yourself.

Just start recording all of your interactions. She might try to get a restraining order and you will be locked out of your home.

She was cheating on her 2nd husband, a CEO of a distillery. I’m sure her marriage is over as well.

Idk I read on Apple News yesterday that she is married as well to a CEO of a distillery. Don’t see how her marriage survives this.

What would she do if the roles were reversed? I would get as much alimony as you can if it was me. You are 52 years old. That means you likely have only 13 years to try and get yourself ready for retirement. No one wants to still work a 40 hour week when you are old and should be putting around in your garden enjoying your golden years. Be cognizant of the fact that the average life expectancy for men in the US is 74 years old so you have 23 years left on average. Make the most out of it.

It’s because she planned on becoming a stepford wife and stay at home while you supported the household. You got lucky and discovered this before you were married. Congrats 🎉

Your only way out of this is you at the very least move to a new state and file for divorce there after establishing residency. You can take a new job that will be “temporary” in a divorce favorable state.

Lots of good points already but I would consider changing the locks on the house after she has been gone for a month. No reason to let her come and go if she abandoned the house like she did to you.

Is there a chance that you are the other half to that story posted on r/divorce? The soon to be ex wife had ignored all summons and court letters thinking that if she didn’t play along, they wouldn’t be divorced. She didn’t want the divorce.

Maybe look at the divorce laws in each state and see which one would be more favorable to you. Especially considering alimony. If you new state is better try and establish residency and file for divorce first

Well it sounds like you are going to be ok. Who knows what the future holds. Just make sure you get enough money to start over. A new apartment will want a sizable deposit because you don’t have a rental history. Probably first and last months rent plus a security deposit for damages.

You are making the same mistake most men do when getting divorced. Men usually walk away with nothing just wanting to start over in life.(at least the first divorce) You want to be nice and split on good terms at the expense of helping yourself start over. You are entitled to half of everything you both built. Half of the increased value of the home, half of the savings account, half of everything acquired during the marriage. Stop trying to be her friend. She threw you away with the trash.

Dude, you really need to a have a consultation with a lawyer. If you are worried you will owe her alimony after only 3 years and she earns about the same as you, the lawyer will help you understand your rights. You won’t be paying alimony and you deserve half of the savings. Of course she will seem reasonable while she is getting the better deal. You need some cash to start your life over. She isn’t your friend anymore. Friends don’t throw away their relationship. Wake up and realize that everyt…

How do they even enforce something like that? So you two aren’t married. I assume she is living in your house so what kept you from just putting the house up for sale and moving out/away from her.

All I am seeing is crappy advice so far. If it isn’t working out and you have been trying for over a year, then it’s time to walk away. You can’t make her love you. The person you loved is gone. You gave it a valiant try, with both of you doing therapy solo and marriage counseling. It wasn’t a wasted effort because at least you will know you did everything you could to make it work. It sucks to lose but you have the rest of your life to live and you will find someone who loves you.

Plus one on the lawyer because you need a forensic accountant to go over all of the assets. Don’t take her word for what you guy have to split.

Confusing how OP worded it but he is talking about dividing assets per a post of his on a different sub.

I think you need to insist on your future wife staying in the work force. This would help avoid alimony payments and she would have her on career/money. Less likely to try and take yours. She would essentially be working for free to cover daycare but it would be worth it in the end. As far as the house goes, you could definitely have your parents by a house and rent it to you with a yearly lease. You are probably better off talking her into just staying not married in my opinion. Why just though…

Open you Apple Watch app on your phone. Then scroll through your watch faces, and find your current watch face. Then edit it to include a shortcut to voice memos. Take it for a test run. You can even press the crown button while the recording is going and it will show your normal watch face instead of a big red button(potentially letting them know you are recording).

☝️this right here! The only exception I would make is that you do want a lawyer. My ex and I did the divorce ourselves, and the female judge was questioning how we divided our assets. Seemed like she was try to help my ex get more. It was over her assuming the credit card debt. So even if you don’t want to shell out too much money, at least spend $2-3k on a lawyer and get it done right. This will affect your finances for a long time if it goes south.

From what I understand, you ask the state bar for recommendations. They are the ones who would know a good lawyer from a bad one. This is only what I have heard when people ask about finding a lawyer. In OP’s case he would start here: https://www.utahbar.org/find-a-lawyer/

If she is leaving the family home and wants the kids lives to be normal, then let her leave. You said you are the breadwinner. If you retain the home and the kids live with you full time the hopefully your finances won’t change. Only thing missing will be her. I would fight to get it all written out in the divorce decree because she will come back trying to get her old life after she finds the grass isn’t greener on the other side. You have a leg up right now as she just wants to walk away. Make…

Well hell if those are the numbers then I like yours idea. File for divorce and get a legal separation. Then you can both continue to live together without the risk of losing future earning to her.

If you want sole possession of the house then you definitely need to get a divorce lawyer. As long as you kept the inheritance money separate from your other finances she will not be able to touch it. it will definitely cost you more than $500 to divorce unless she doesn’t fight it and walks away. Most likely $3-5k depending on how much she fights the divorce. Sounds like any love you two used to share for each other has vanished. Ripe the band aid off and find happiness living by yourself for a…

Then try and get alimony as well. It won’t break him. You said that you have been married for 6 years. That would probably be how long he would be ordered to pay alimony. If you are feeling generous, when your lawyers try and find a compromise make the alimony for a small amount like $500 a month.

Most guys here just want a fair divorce. They also should want it to be fair for their spouse. No one should lose more then 50%. I personally don’t agree with alimony in most cases. Like your marriage I wouldn’t say it would be fair. You could have gone to work and got a career going for yourself. Unless he forbade you for working, then it should be 50% division and say goodbye. The things that piss the guys off in this current divorce climate is the ex wife getting the home plus her car plus ch…

Then he can afford to share with his wife. It wouldn’t be right to leave you without anything.

What is fair is 50% of your shared assets. Not sure about alimony, that is something you two can figure out. If he gives you a hard time, and it goes in front of a judge, he will have to give you 50% plus alimony depending on what part of the world you live in. My advise would be to call some divorce lawyers and try to find one that will wait until it is over for payment. Or you can reach out to some type of women’s support group and they might help you with getting a decent lawyer.
