I’m sorry to hear about your experience, but also appreciate the perspective, since it mirrors my own nicely. I honestly can’t answer the question; if we had more in common, perhaps I’d have found myself with stronger feelings. What I can say is that I don’t think I (consciously or otherwise) put up barriers simply BECAUSE it was my first post-divorce relationship- I’m open to finding someone compatible, and if (maybe when) I find that someone, I’m going to be fully invested in the relationship.…

You, sir or madam, are a genius. This is the only answer: start over and be thankful. Generosity and kindness are lacking.

Sorry man, I feel ya. It’s funny what we cling to when the bottom falls out, and what we miss when we decide to let go.

No, you’re right, but he meant when the other person doesn’t feel that way, there aren’t so many other options.

“Feelings Are Assholes” - divorceshmivorse, 01-Dec-2019 If that isn’t TM by you in 3 months,...well, isn’t THIS an empty threat? Do it. I want that on a shirt, and I want you to be a part of it.

Thank you for this, I feel like an asshole, but appreciate the kind words.

It’s all of it, and the blend depends on your role in it. Seek help if/when you need it; speaking up here is a great first step, but there are folks trained to help with issues like this. I’m just a guy who’s been through it and sees light at the end of the tunnel. That can help too, hopefully.

Sorry, friend- it’s definitely difficult, want to talk?

And you’re happy? I was looking toward having a fire outside, but it’s too windy tonight.

I think there are a lot of us like this, when often the stereotypes are that we’re a stoic and private bunch. Divorce sucks, no matter whose idea it is, and we can be a community for each other. Thanks, redryder, for stepping up!

Happy thanksgiving to you, too! Keep strong, friend.

I’m hoping you’ll reply to my direct messages...I’m no expert at tech nor relationships, but I may have a thing or two that can help you through the next few days, if you’ll allow it.

I’d like that a lot- I’m newish to reddit and don’t know how to DM, but I’m happy to give you my phone number if you’ll promise to call?

We do care- that’s why this sub exists. As bad as you feel life is right now, and I’m quite confident that IT FUCKING SUCKS, it’s not worth pulling the plug. Please don’t- talk to us, and understand that while you’re not the first to feel these things, you’re not alone.

Hi friend- I don’t know you, but I’ve been where you’ve been. Can I chat with you tonight?

I’m sorry, friend- there’s rarely logic in these things, but it’s good that you have what sounds to be a supportive team on both sides. I have a similar story after 15 years of marriage (oldest kid is now 14); fell out of love with me 5 or so years ago, and just didn’t know what to do. She’s now dating an ex-friend of mine, so that sucks donkey balls, but the best thing WE (royal we, I.e. divorced men) can do is be strong for our kids and live our best lives ever. Sounds like a stupid platitude,…

15 lbs!! Wow, that’s impressive! Must’ve been either a large crowd, Irish, or, perhaps both? Stay strong, brother.

Costco runs are now biannual, at best, and are mostly for jerky and scotch.

Divorce was initiated in December, finalized in June. All YTD is just me, same house, kids half the time, and still the same (EXACT SAME) irrigation needs: few plants, small patch of grass, but in TUCSON, so typically water intensive. Same pool too, which is connected to water line to stay full. Literally ONLY difference is she’s paying for her own water now (and half the kids’, like I said).

Sorry for your experience, but it sure sounds like you made the right decision. The fact that you can pinpoint the things that lead to this is a great sign that you won’t fall into another relationship just like that one!

This is a hallway off the courtyard- long and narrow, three stationary windows opposite. I always saw this as a gallery, but STBX thought that would look “messy”, so we stuck a console table in the middle to break it up visually. She liked the table, so took it as part of our settlement. I liked the table too, but I like the new hallway much better.

Were kids involved? That’s my primary driver, but maybe I’m using them as an excuse.

Follow on question to this, specifically for the guys with kids- what do you do for ex birthday, Mother’s Day, Christmas? My kids don’t have the means to provide for themselves, so I’ll be buying my ex these gifts. If it makes my kids happy, I’m all for it, but how does this calculate into any of the decree docs? Does it?!!

Being very cautious with finances until I can guarantee that I can keep my house so my kids have a stable base, but I’ve already set up a nice spread for them tomorrow. Cards for everyone, fun breakfast, and boxes of chocolates for after school. It’s cliched, but I find my serenity in making sure my kids don’t suffer. Best of luck to you, friend. We’ll get through this.

I went to my GP a few weeks after I got the news that my marriage was dead. Am usually a pretty up-beat person, and was scripted some citalopram. Not sure what the trade name is, but I realized I was situationally depressed, not clinically. So, after a few weeks of waiting for a miracle solution that didn’t come, I took myself off...learned one shouldn’t necessarily do this, but my dose was low and I haven’t a history with antidepressants. Instead I doubled down on my talk therapy, and made scor…

I struggled with this too, this year- first apart in 15, 20 if you include dating, and I’m 40, so ya, half my life. Well, I KNEW I wasn’t getting her anything, but it was really hard for me to take my three kids (all under 13) to go shopping for her. First, they have ridiculous concepts of what she wanted- “rubber spatulas and soap”, and when presented with options, went for the most gaudy things imaginable. Was starting to stress, and recognized that the kids are what matter. They wanted to buy…

Sorry man. Going through this now. My parents just left after a 90 minute diatribe about how this is going to affect my children. Never once did they acknowledge that it’s not my fault- she wants out, and I’ve done all I can.

Thanks all- in spite of all of the excellent advice I kept the invitation open; my kids said they wanted grandma and grandpa here. I did tell my mom that the one ground rule was she can’t talk about my ex. So far, so good.
