I mostly agree with this. I don't quite agree with the definition though. Originally the word for patriarchy came from the ancient Greeks to mean the father ruling over the family. So in that anthropological sense yeah I agree with you. The word has changed many times since then especially now because of feminism its more of a euphemism more than anything else to blame men for all the worlds problems. Its such a loosely used concept that its not even worth taking seriously anymore at least in a …

A lot of what has been said above resonates with the way I think of it too. The way I personally summarize it is with the following. - Entitlement: your supposed to be doing X for me based on your sex. Your not doing that for me what is wrong with you. - Dismissive: I don't care about you or your problems, figure it out your yourself and leave me out of it. I would add disposability but I think that often amounts to another form of entitlement often times. You don't have inherit worth therefore …

From what I can tell "Man vs Bear" is basically a rhetorical version of a polygraph test. If you react negatively its because your guilty which makes you one of the dangerous ones. If your calm, chill and understanding then your one of the good ones which makes you safe. This creates a number of problems though - Its unfalsifiable, circular and over simplifies human psychology. If establishing guilt were this easy then judicial systems wouldn't need to go through extensive efforts to gather and …

Un-surprising, men are socially expected to initiate and persue sex. If men seek out alternatives it's probably seen as deviant behavior. Also woman in particular might see it as highly objectifying.

My thoughts exactly. If they get to dictate what masculinity is they can control how men act and think. "Positive" masculinity is the traits / behaviors which are beneficial to women and not necessarily things that are beneficial to men...

To add another variable to the discussion; medication may also be effecting outcomes in woman. Many woman are on anti-depressants and birth control. A common symptom of anti-depressants is emotional blunting which may be helping to ease the effect of negative emotions. Birth control can also negatively impact sex drive. To what extent woman's negative emotions are being regulated or blunted by medication is questionable.

I don't quite agree. A number of woman, feminists included can also weaponize men's vulnerability against them or get turned off. What people say and what they do are two different things. While many woman say that it doesn't mean they will actively live up to it when faced with it especially if it poses a challenge for them. Granted there are woman who find it attractive and handle it well, but also many who don't. Emotional vulnerability is independent of feminism anyways, its not something we…

That's very hard to do: - Feminists and MRA's aren't a monolith. Even those within these groups can still strongly disagree with each other. - Feminists and MRA's due to gendered experiences can have different ideas of what equality should look like and how it should work. - Feminists and MRA's tend to have different social, political, economic and historical anaylsis. - Feminists and MRA's are both human; as a result can have there own set of biases.

Based on my understanding the idea of rights wasn't much of a thing until the enlightenment period in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Before then rights were far and few between and what few rights existed was largely for the elites. Even then those few rights were something you were often born into. They weren't universal rights in virtue of being human that emphasized individual freedoms which we take for granted today even if its still problematic in practice. Everyone else had duties and o…

Doubt it, we are the disposable sex. The only way I see society making significant changes is if it has no other choice but to start paying attention.

I haven't read his book and I am not interested in doing so. I have seen a number of Scott Galloways interviews and my takeaway is that men need to be the best of both a modern and traditional male in a society that does not support or reciprocate it along with all the duties and obligations that come with it. Mean while woman can be whatever and do whatever they want. The guy is a walking text book of double standards, pseudo science and sexism. Cant stand him. Thanks for making the sacrifice t…

Thanks, I appreciate the clarification and feedback. I am uncertain if there is a specific academic feminist tradition or school of thought you are focusing on or academic feminism in general. Feminists in both academic and non-academic settings can differ considerably in their interpretations and proposed solutions amongst each other depending on the topic at hand. While feminism can identify genuine problems I often find myself more skeptical or disagreeing with them on such issues due to the …

This may sound somewhat redundant since others have made similar points which also reflect my own, but I want to try and express my own perspective and summarize this as succinctly as I can. The argument seems to support general theories from psychology and sociology for socialization, identity, and presentation more directly than it supports feminism. These kind of biases, errors and behavior are not uniquely feminist or non-feminists. They are human tendencies that can affect anyone. As a resu…

Men are allowed to express anger and other emotions that validate gyno-centrism and misandry if expressed in a beneficial way for woman. If a man gets angry at his partner because she broke his console then he will get demonized. If a man gets angry and kills another man that tried to break into his home and sexually assault his wife then he will probably be praised for it.

Exactly, it might be worse than in the past too because current generations seem less patriotic and quite disgruntled by society. If I were an officer I would be more scarred of my own soldiers under my command than the enemy soldiers.

There arguments are self defeating. - If exempting woman from conscription is reasonable because of the unequal burdens and pressures woman face in the public sphere for child birth, care-giving lower wealth and earnings then exempting men from conscription is also reasonable because of the burdens men face such as higher workplace fatalities, shorter life expectancy, greater homelessness, violence victimization, breadwinner etc. - If men are still expected or even obligated to fulfill there tra…

This points to a common problem I often have with feminism. Feminism and Patriarchal analysis is often unfalsifiable, which is self defeating. To make knowledge claims requires the ability to distinguish between true or false claims. If no possible observation could show the claim is false, then no observation can demonstrate that it is true either. The claim is unable to identify errors and as a consequence is also unable to provide justification. This prevents the ability to reliably tell the …

Depends who you ask. Different people and groups can have different definitions. examples that I have seen include: - A society controlled by men for the benefit of men at the expense of woman. - A society controlled by men for the benefit of male oligarchs at the expense of everyone else. - A society controlled by men specifically excluding women from power. - A society controlled by men that oppresses woman. - A society controlled by men where rigid gender roles are enforced which harms everyo…

There aren't really any new criticisms in this article and it makes the same mistakes I am seeing being made in the vast majority of discussions over AI concerns. The main reason why this technology exists is because social interactions in society are already messed up. AI did not create these social issues in the first place. While this technology might be reinforcing or creating some new social issues its mainly filling a vacuum and providing alternatives to harm, toxic, unrealistic real world…

There are a few problems with research in matriarchal societies. - They are far and few between. That can easily result in sampling biases. - They tend to be smaller indigenous cultures as the poster pointed out which means we don't really know if matriarchies scale with large industrialized societies. - The conditions for matriarchal societies to exist could also be responsible for men being peaceful calling into question correlation vs causation. - Matriarchal societies are not a feminist utop…

Another mans evil is not my responsibility. Woman are not entitled to my protection or defense just because we share the same chromosomes. As long as I am not the perpetrator that's all I care. Men stand up to evil men more often than woman stand up to evil woman.

I agree with many of the points here. There are a few areas I would like to expand upon further. - The very concept of systemic oppression is usually defined by feminists in such a way that it focuses on woman's historical experiences of oppression but ignores or even denies men's historical experiences of oppression. Primarily in the form of hard labor and conscription which has stripped men of there humanity, bodily autonomy and freedoms. - While a subset of men are dangerous to woman they are…

Men being pushed or forced into hard labor and combat is how men are oppressed for the overall benefit of oligarchs, woman and children. Because feminists have monopolized the definition of oppression though no one will acknowledge men's historical version of it.

I lumped the 2 together because they both call out the issues men face but there solutions tend to be terrible and they are quite gyno-centric.

Maybe, his solutions are pretty gynocentric though so I am skeptical how pro men he really is. If it is just a tactic to pander to feminists to maintain a platform he is backing himself into a corner. He will face situations where he will have to choose between pandering to feminists or helping men. Raising awareness of men's issues by pandering to feminists is like curing cancer by administering rat poison.

The idea that men just need to do better is leveraging traditional male gender roles to trap men in a never ending rat race. I haven't seen anyone define what the upper ceiling for men "doing better" is. If men did better how do we know the ceiling for that wont just keep increasing. Until someone defines and socially enforces what that ceiling is it can just be increased indefinitely until men either burn out or hit a wall. Also, if men do better and it exceeds woman are we going to tell woman …

Richard reeves and Scott Galloway are walking text books of double standards. When it come to woman they are modern and progressive granting all the freedoms and rights for woman to be whatever they want. I have noticed something similar. Intersectional feminists will still define oppression in a gendered manner precluding men's gendered forms of oppression. As a result I think there is an internal tension between the definitions and approach of intersectionality. I haven't seen intersectionality acknowledge not just the above list but also the hard labor and combat men were obligated into as oppression. Claiming something by definition only works in a narrow set of circumstances. The way it is used here is often a rhetorical device more than anything else. The most they could say is a feminist who is also a misandrist, I disagree with them, they are misguided or its your definition against my definition. As far as the sources go it could easily be reversed to explain woman's behavior and attitudes towards men and society just as well if not better. Yet I doubt they would tolerate that. For Exam…

It can be both society and the individual, its not necessarily one or the other. If increasingly large number of men are facing the kind of struggles your describing then it increasingly points to the presence of system issues. It goes back to the old adage you cant select which cards were given to you but its up to you how to play them. Something that isn't often talked about is local models. They are progressing like frontier models are. They don't quite offer the same level of quality but if you just want something to chat with most lower to mid range comps can easily run them now with the default settings. You don't need to be a tech person to run them locally anymore either which makes them very easy to setup and run. So if privacy is a concern there is that option. These young men are very probably going to opt out of dating altogether, especially if AI is giving them sufficient validation. If that threatens feminism or women in general then that's their issue. If men are increasingly turning to AI chat bots instead for companionship in large numbers that would indicate a deeper and more serious issue in society…

I would also add these which I find are very common: Over Generalizations Unfalsifiable Cherry Picking Apex Fallacy False Cause Double Standards As others have pointed out pointing it out to many feminists especially online ones isn't going to get you anywhere with them. There is very little I disagree with on this. It echoes many of my thoughts. The way I summarize one of the main failures of feminism is that it claims we are equals which I agree with. However, it places malice, fallibility and bias disproportionately if not entirely on men. In which case how are we equals ? Either we are equal and these are human problems not just male problems or these are male problems and we are not equal. Having it both ways is shrodingers feminism. In general feminism suf…

I am concerned that if woman are overwhelmingly put in support roles it will back fire on men. Because those support roles would otherwise be filled by men, which leaves more men to fill the most dangerous and hazardous military roles. Its why I specified I would have to see proof both men and woman would have to be put into equally dangerous roles as men. If it can be clearly demonstrated this wont be the case then Yes I am much more inclined to agree.

I think abolishing the draft all together is the best way to go. Forcing people to experience the worst of what humanity has to offer will only cause more issues. Its also assuming the draft is being used in a justified war. Also I don't trust the military to treat conscripted men and woman equally. I would have to see proof woman are being treated the same way in the same positions as men. Otherwise the military might put men in the most dangerous situations and use woman for safer support role…

I think a combination of nature and nurture is what best explains our behavior. Nature or nurture alone is not enough. Earlier you mentioned evo-psych tends to ignore individual exceptions and focus on the broad general trends instead. I interpreted this as the field over generalizing. You raise a number of valid concerns. For example I am child free, in which case how do I fit in with the evo-psych framework ? Because the theory surrounding men and woman's behavior based on the science of eggs, sperm and offspring wont apply to me. Infact those are liabilities for those such as myself. I would agree for the most part. When men are socially valued based on protection and provision it can lead to competition for resources and status that results in violence between each other. As a result it puts the spot light on men instead of the structure. When competition for resources and status is not required or diminishes men can rapidly start becoming quite peaceful. Depends if the war is justified and how the state treats its citizens. If its not justified or the state does not act in the best interests of its citizens then conscription is not justified and its justified for its citizens to escape or turn on the state. IFS has a conservative bias. Doesn't mean they are wrong but requires taking what they say with a grain of salt. Like all studies though it has to be combed through to see what methodology they used to arrive at these conclusions. Sociology and psychology suffer from a long list of methodological issues that can raise doubt, additional questions or result in very questionable outcomes and conclusions. Cant take what studies say at face value.

As I understand Bell Hooks she seems to emphasize an intersectional (class, race, gender, sex, etc) approach. Problem is her analysis still seems to rely on the same definitions, concepts and terms that non intersectional feminists use. This is a very long winded way of saying we think men and woman's issues are a zero sum game. As a result we prioritize woman's issues over men. Atleast on toxic social media platforms feminists will usually give a much more explicit message of there misandry and sexism towards men. In academic circles they will use this kind of highly verbose language to convey it in more subtle forms instead of just saying it outright. Its very frustrating....

My answer to this question "who created the system?" is mother nature. This question seems to presuppose that men have hyper agency and do not have biological, environmental and social pressures of there own that limit and cause a wide range of issues for men. The way I see it social structures with males at the top of the hierarchy who brutalize those with lower social status than them is hardly specific to humans. Its just in humans we have oligarchs who take advantage of there status and perp…

I have seen similar responses to this as well. When woman abuse there children or commit infanticide at higher rates than men its because society makes woman the caregivers. Ironic how it doesn't work the other way around. You don't see them saying yes men are more violent and abusive to there partners and other men because we push men into active roles such as protectors, providers and leaders, etc. If men weren't put into these positions maybe we would see a lot less of that. I would add more to the list: Domestic violence is equal. Men also have invisible emotional labor and cognitive load (If we are going to use those terms). Men aren't emotionally vulnerable just because of gender roles or lack of therapy but because of how society (both men and woman) treat men who open up emotionally.

As I understand it Intersectional Feminism's approach is to analyze the intersections of race, class, gender etc to expose oppression, advantage and disadvantages in groups which was popularized by Bell Hooks. Based on what I could gather from the post here is my summary of what I think the author is trying to say. On the surface homicide statistics suggest large gender differences. However, this would conflict with broader IPV data showing near parity. Given significant gaps in reporting of male victims of homicide there is room for sizable rates of woman who are perpetrators of homicide. If this assumption is possible based on other IPV data then intimate partner homicide in the U.S. could be far cl…

Creating a #Metoo movement for men is going to be tough. I think that woman's activism such as the #Metoo movement has been successful in part because of the empathy gap. As a result I suspect to create a #Metoo movement for men will mean first solving the empathy gap otherwise the population will just ignore or demean it. I am not sure how to do that at these scales, given the current state of society and without further reinforcing men's traditional roles.

A lot this touches upon recent thoughts and comments I have had recently. Men and boys are in a tricky spot because in order to be valued and seen as social creatures men have to perform these traditionally masculine gender roles which can take heavy toll. If many men find themselves in a society which puts them in a no win situation where nothing they do will succeed or it doesn't seem worth it; then it might not require coordination. It could be a social trend that emerges as a result of those social conditions. If enough men do that it might form social groups as a result of that common group and a sense of comradery. Decriminalization: While legalization is better than criminalization it still creates problems that decriminalization can tackle. The other forms of criminalization I think just create more problems than they solve. Also when I look at the problems for sex work its hardly specific to it. Sex work acts more like a canary in the cold mine or a mirror for what is broadly going on in society which means even if sex work didn't exist the issues it has would just continue in broader society anyways.

Sure! Men are the ones who are often still expected to and demonstrate confidence, initiative, emotional investment etc by initiating and perusing. I know times are changing but that expectation is still widespread. Men's interest and initiative towards woman is common and as a result is taken for granted. I understand from your earlier posts that you’re explicitly rejecting men vs women, binary, or zero-sum thinking, which I appreciate. That’s not my intention either. My concern is that, as you’ve defined it, patriarchy appears to overlap with what has been described in matriarchal, matrilineal, or even more egalitarian societies, systems that still allocate power, responsibility, and vulnerability unevenly, which I have found often maintain traditional gender roles for both men and women. I was thinking more along the lines of like lets say conscript 1000 men and half do combat the other half do support. If you conscript both men and woman then 1000 men may get conscripted to do combat and 1000 woman get conscripted to do support. I would need to see evidence the military will actively split men and woman equally in dangerous roles.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates10/12/25 11:48 PM

A concern that I have with equal conscription is that it could actually backfire on men and put them at higher risk. If both men and woman are forced into military service the military might put the men in the most dangerous and hazardous positions while tasking woman with safer support roles. Are we going to have to also implement equal male and female personnel in all roles too ? I don't trust the military to assign equal risk to men and woman.

This brings up a number of direct and indirect issues I have had with the term myself. - The most common element I can find within the concept of "patriarchy" that seems the most consistent between feminists is that it's all men's fault. As if men don't have duties, obligations or pressures that push or force men too. - I am concerned that if “patriarchy” is used to claim men are always at fault then any attempt to question or disprove the claim is taken as further proof of guilt. It would be as…

- This thread’s two months old. On Reddit, that’s basically inactive. I’ve moved on. - Based on your earlier comments, I don’t see this being a good-faith discussion, so I’ll leave it there. - If you think men’s rights were always a given and never had to be fought for, you’re overlooking a major part of history. - You could have gotten answers or a pretty good idea what we think by now if you did your own research instead of repeatedly asking us to educate you.

If enough men opt out, it does have an impact. Japan’s collapsing fertility rate is a potential example of wide spread withdrawal scaling. Being “missed” doesn’t mean valued. A slave can be “missed” by his master if he leaves, but only because labor is gone. That’s not respect or basic human decency. As far as reproduction goes by the 3rd to 4th generation, most descendants won’t know your name, face, or life. So even if you are missed it probably wont be for long... Social systems and cultural …

Sums up pretty much my thoughts on this. I have thought the same thing myself that men who quietly opt out of society exposes the double standards and hypocrisy society has towards men. The only thing that I would add is that its not just happy and positive emotions towards woman and children but protection, provision, pursuit, wining, dinning and stoicism. If society wants men to perform these roles it has to provide adequate incentive and support.

I think there are a couple things going on. - Dr K has said so himself that he isn't an expert on feminist theory. He leaves that kind of analysis up to feminist scholars. - Being a therapist its his job to focus on the individual; specifically who he works with. This idea that men created the system attributes hyper autonomy to men as if men didn't have all kinds of pressures duties and obligations of there own. Seriously the vast majority of men through history have been peasants and commoners…

A common issue with these kind of discussions is that it tends to center woman's experiences. This leaves out how men can experience these kind of issues in there own distinct ways. Studies do this too as a result certain problems like sexual assault and rape of men can be significantly under represented. That also includes other concepts like discrimination, harassment, power and oppression.

"Positive masculinity" just sounds like another way of saying men need to be the best of both a traditional and modern man except without social support, guidance or even reciprocity. I agree with most of this. Depends which feminists it is some are pro sex work others are anti. I was trying to imply it in my post but you fleshed it out way more than I was planning on too. Feminists are quite divided on sex work so depends which feminism it is. Sex work is a reflection of how we think and treat each other in the rest of society which means issues in sex work are broader issue within society as a whole already. As a result tackling issues in sex work requires tackling them as wide spread social issues otherwise tackling issues just within sex work are band aid fixes at best. Short answer: When men opt out of there gender roles it exposes the double standards and entitlement society has towards men. Its interesting you mention sex workers (escorts). There is some truth to this. However, this isn't just about individuals anymore. Its an increasingly larger segment of the population now. That if men have the kind of options that woman do for birth control such as pills and implants then woman wont be able to trap men or men could try lying to have unprotected sex with woman. When I hear the "man vs bear " disagreement I think of another variation which is "woman vs sex bot" disagreement. If men are choosing the sex bot it shows just how bad modern woman are. If you have an issue with that then you are the problem. Doubt many woman woul…

Indeed this essentially amounts to white knighting. I don't exist for that. As long as I am not doing anything wrong that is all that matters to me. Indeed quite the double standard we are expected to police other men but woman wont police each other. In fact I see far more nepotism involved.

idk you might be more optimistic than I am. yes it will require that and and will take some time. I suspect it is the future generations of woman who will primarily be the ones to reject the current feminist narrative because it wont match there lived experiences. Even then I still have doubts because people are becoming increasingly atomized and the birth rate is tanking. As a result the echo chambers that dominate false narratives and the rate that newer updated feminists replace older outdate…

By that logic if we can call it that here are some counter retorts that show the absurdity of those kind of assertions. "If you feel unsafe, your the problem!" Or "If feeling attacked is admission of guilt then is feeling innocent admission of innocence ? in which case I am immune from feminist critiques because I feel innocent" I wonder would the phrase "If you feel attacked, your the problem!" constitute as toxic femininity ? This phrase if anything is just going to push people away those who …

Indeed because woman have hijacked the original definition and define and use it around there experiences and roles as a result it rarely if ever gets applied to men's experiences. When I apply it to men's experiences and roles I find it starts to paint a very different picture than what woman portray.

I haven't gotten rage from being emotional or emotionally vulnerable with woman. I have had it backfire on me in many other ways though. - Creates lots of extra drama for nothing on top of struggling with what I was originally struggling with. - They get upset and now the shift is on there emotions and I have to be there for them emotionally while I am still emotionally struggling with my own issues from before. - Having it used against me in future arguments. - Being shamed for what I was feeli…

I agree a large scale strike from men is unlikely. At the same time someone could argue that woman at a large scale aren't going to change there ways either. At the end of the day men and woman are struggling to find viable sexual and romantic partners. We can either work together to make things work for both going into the future or we can both fall. I am not sure how many men like to be masculine vs social pressures and conditioning. Its a nature nurture debate that gets really tricky really q…

One of the problems indirectly brought up in this post is that for many men to be sexually and romantically actively puts them in double binds. Men are still largely held up to traditional gender roles which actively puts men in performative roles to be seen and find opportunities. That goes for sexual and romantically opportunities as well. Which means to have romantic and sexual opportunities men are still expected to initiate, peruse, protect, provide and to be emotional anchors in the relati…

Yeah saying that lonely men deserve to be lonely over simplifies a lot. It can't be due to the loss of third spaces, social anxiety, general eroding of in personal skills, neuro-deivergence, burned out from school or work, trauma (which you used above), mental disorders, unrealistic social expectations, etc. Nope its specifically because you are a bad person which makes the problem worse because now people can be stigmatized for doing nothing wrong. Also I have seen guys who are jerks and have p…

So many good points in this. Sex and romantic relationships are not Mjölnir.... Both men and woman can have a broad range of reasons for doing what they do such as love, romance, boredom, high, drunk, insecure, validation, revenge or self punishment just to name a few. The idea that woman reward good men also implies that woman have the moral high ground and it is men that are the problem, which is very sketchy. Feeds into a WOW effect. Personally someone who views relationships this way is not …

Another problem with feminism is that it doesn't have a widely agreed upon definition of equality either. Different individuals, groups and sex's can have different definitions of what equality is supposed to look like based on there own lived experience, research and analysis. I think a good example of this is the pay gap. Woman are still earning less than there male counter parts largely if not entirely due to behavior and personal choices and not because businesses are out right paying woman …

This is the most succinct way I can think of to summarize my position of feminism. It claims to be about equality but ignores equal fallibility in there own perspectives, positions, worldviews, movements etc that perpetuate or create issues for men. While doable standards, hypocrisy, bias etc is a general human issue this is something we all need to acknowledge and tackle to move forward together. But Feminism for all its claims seems to expect that to go entirely or at least mostly one way. As …

The idea that men created the patriarchy and therefore are the ones that have to solve it includes some serous other problems related to this post. The implication is if men created patriarchy for the benefit of men at the expense of woman (selection bias) is that men are inherently evil. That men as a whole choose a social structure to take advantage of and traumatize woman after many woman gave birth to and raised them which is no small feat. If that is the case why on earth would you trust th…

In a way it is isolating. Because I shun or disregard male sterotypes and gender roles it can leave me in a state of limbo socially because many still expect men to live up to there gender roles. Society doesn't seem to know what to do with men who do that so I try and find those who have similar experiences as me usually within LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent groups.

It claims to be about equality but ignores equal fallibility in there own perspectives, positions, worldviews, movements etc that perpetuate or create issues for men. While doable standards, hypocrisy, bias etc is a general human issue this is something we all need to acknowledge and tackle to move forward together. Agreed! When I talk about gender roles I say its a systemic issue; one of the reasons being is that both men and woman reinforce the standards on men. Something that I find at-least mainstream feminism doesn't acknowledge very well. Instead it seems to put all or most of the blame on men. Although some such as Bell Hooks seem to acknowledge both genders reinforce the standards which means to liberate men from there roles requires a collective effort. I have other issues with Bell Hooks but this …

Luckily I wasn't raised to be emotionally wall myself off so in that sense it might be easier for me. However, I still have had pressure from society I have had to pick apart and work on. Also it requires finding those I can be emotionally vulnerable with because both men and woman can react to it poorly or use it against you in any number of ways, which I have had to learn the hard way. So while I wouldn't say I am emotionally unavailable I am emotionally cautious. Also, even though I wasn't ra…

Not engaging with online vitriol is a great first step. There are a number of things on an indiviaul level that I do. - Keeping in touch with friends and being a resource they can turn to get help for problem solving, being a sound board and emotional support without negatively judging them, stigmatizing or weaponizing it against them. They also do this for me so its mutual. - Being able to talk about almost anything respectfully. There are limits to that of course. If you are doing something re…

I agree with this "I have never liked the traditional idea of masculinity and what it means to be a man because it holds men up to standards they should aim to achieve, often based around sacrifice and service to other people." Not only that but its a really narrow restrictive definition of what a human is. Traditional masculinity to me represents repressing men's humanity to full fill survival goals. Except, we no longer live in those times and yet society still expects men to full fill many of…

This reminds me of the Femicide protests earlier this year in Australia. Even though AU is one of the safest industrialized countries in the world and has had a decline of homicides for decades. But when there is an uptick even though its part of an overall decline there are protests of femicide. When I go to the AU government website for homicide statistics men make up 2/3 of murders. Yet we never hear anything about how androcide is actually the norm, femicide is the exception. According to th…

I have been thinking about how this phrase can actually be used against feminist's lately. That's what can happen though when you use a phrase that lacks specificity and precision. It can easily be hijacked. What your pointing out though can be seen in domestic violence advocacy. When groups have tried opening domestic violence shelters for men feminist groups will protest.

As soon as I saw the title it suddenly occurred to me this phrase often is used to make the average decent guy sound like the exception rather than the rule... Its not my responsibility to white knight in an attempt to compensate for the bad guys, which allows me to be socially accepted. Being a decent person in my personal life based on how I treat others should be enough. If I had to hear this kind of playlist on repeat all the time at work it would probably drive me nuts too.

This is a great post! it has helped me identity and clarify some weak spots on my thinking related to this. There were some issues I had with the idea that men who display traditionally feminine characteristics were hated because of misogyny. For example woman who see men being traditionally feminine can have quite an issue with that; does that mean these woman are misogynistic ? Do these woman hate themselves ? There was still something else that I couldn't put my finger on though. Using LGBTQ …

Not only are men's privileges based on other privileges but they are also based on men taking on many long standing duties, obligations and developing all kinds of skills. Its not like these privileges are just offered or come easily. In fact many of them can take a heavy toll on men mental and physically which raises the question to what extent are they really privileges.

Yes, because at least in its mainstream form, feminism often sends the message that men must not only solve their own problems but also take responsibility for everyone else’s, even when systemic issues affecting men and boys are ignored or reinforced by women and girls. This expectation aligns with the ideal man being someone who is self-sufficient and a white knight which is baked into male gender roles. From an early age, men are conditioned not to be a burden and to always be ready to rescue…

This is a great sumarization that captures many of the thoughts that I have been having lately. The only tweak that I personally would make would be to expand upon the list to include shorter life expectancy, homelessness and homicide. There maybe more I cant remember of the top of my head. Although those items may fall under this "Many systems—family courts, education, mental health services, and criminal justice—has and still disadvantage men." anyways. In any case thanks for posting this!

Not good... I just want the freedom to be myself regardless if it could be considered masculine, feminine or neutral. Unfortunately, society still expects men to live up to all kinds of masculine gender norms that I have zero interest in which can be frustrating and leave me out of place in society.
