Pine trees and the like can grow in very poor soil and at altitude/in the cold. Mountains typically have shallow and poor topsoil and the cold/altitude thing literally comes with the territory. Likewise the rocky stream situation. That's how I was raised too. The women did the cooking 90% of the time and they took pride in it. Any man who tried to get involved in daily kitchen duties was shown out of the kitchen quick smart.
