Some things do just seem weird to say, so for those I start with something like "this is probably going to sound cheesy, but...". He is not the romantic type, but this paves the way for me to compliment him in a gushy way. This is so cheesy to say, but I just really admire the way you make decisions so thoughtfully. I'm going to be a total cornball right now and tell you that I respect you. Like, you actually have integrity and keep your promises. It makes me feel really safe

Did you use to work? If so, why did you leave? I worked before we got married, but we immediately moved and my husband was happy to have me at home Do you think it is better for kids to have moms at home? Probably depends on the woman and the situation How do you fill your day when the kids aren’t home? My son is not even two, so he's always home What does this lifestyle choice do for your marriage? Well since I stay home with my son and my husband has a WFH job we are spending the summer overse…

I was out to dinner with a new (girl) friend and this man came over because he was friends with my friend. We all had dinner together. The man and I had a lot in common. We've been married 4 years now

I had a negative net worth before I got married and became a housewife (maybe 20k in student loans from my master's degree). My husband refers to it as my bride price 😂

I agree with that advice (although getting my one year old to do anything for 20 minutes straight would be an achievement). If you can take a nice walk right before your husband gets home, it might give you a moment to breathe and reflect on some positive things about your day. If you can carry that through to when you greet your husband it might set you up for a peaceful evening.

Just a few questions I was wondering as I read - If you look at him objectively (if you didn't have a history with him) would you think "wow - there's a great catch!"? Will you be proud to introduce him to your (future) professional colleagues? If he stays in his current job and does start professional school in 2 years, will marriage, house, and kids get pushed back until after he finishes?

If you want to stay with your church, it might be a good idea to approach a pastor or elder and lay out what's going on. You don't need to tell the whole church community. The leadership might be able to help (by connecting you with resources, helping pay for counseling, or even just listening).

Are you me? I feel so similar. I was a housewife before my son was born 8 months ago. I'm the one doing all the exhausting childcare, even weekends. I'm grumpy that my husband stays up late and sleeps in, while I get up at 6 and then crash into bed before 11. I'm grumpy that I can't go anywhere or do anything that would actually give me a break. I'm grumpy that we can't travel to family and family can't travel to us. This is a very tiring age of baby development and a trying time due to covid. E…

Hi! I have the same disdain for stinky lunch containers. It hasn't been an issue for me lately due to a combination of him remembering to dump it out, eating out more for lunch, and just using the dishwasher more consistently. Here is what helped me in situations where my husband said he would do something but didn't or where I've expressed a need /desire for something to be done and he agreed: speaking his language. Saying "I've asked you to abc" or "you said you'd xyz" somehow didn't click wit…

So glad you said this. Idk why so many people believe women didn't work. For most of history, most women were working in some capacity. Farming, sewing/weaving/spinning, typing, cleaning, selling, trading, serving, nursing, educating, cooking, writing, entertaining, "entertaining", etc.

I've got a four month old, and while my old friends haven't deserted me I still wanted to expand my circle. Maybe meeting new people will give you a fresh start socially. Here's where I've met new people - baby storytime at the library new mom groups (there are a few churches in my area that have these, and my city has a nonprofit running groups for first time parents) peanut app "tinder for mom friends" local mom Facebook groups host meetups flagging down women with strollers when I'm out on wa…

My siblings started going in together for gifts for our parents for that reason. We'd rather give them one really expensive thing they'd never buy for themselves instead of each giving them something reasonable that they'd probably end up buying anyway. And as for inventing items for a wish list, I do that too. My mom is the only person that asks what I want, so I started thinking, "What would be something nice to have that I don't care enough about to get for myself?" Last year I asked for real…

I made a nice wreath for our front door, put up our tiny Christmas tree, and put (electric) candles in all the windows. That's it as far as decorating. Oh! And candles. I front loaded the season with Christmas movies and now don't feel the need to watch any more. But I've got Christmas music going all day (yesterday choral music, today gentle piano). My husband and I are reading through an advent book every night. I baked a bunch of cookies for my husband to bring to work, which I do every year.…

Send him a link to an interesting news story, blog post, or podcast episodes and tell him you'd love to discuss it next time you chat. Even if he doesn't get around to reading /listening to it, you can give him the main idea and ask his opinion. Ask for a book recommendation (something he likes, not just something he thinks you'll like) and then as you read it you'll be able to update him and discuss. "omg. I just read the chapter where x does y." Basically, find things you can continually conne…

You have time to take your time. That became my mantra after back to back second trimester stillbirths when I was freaking out that I was getting older and wanting living children. I'm now 32 and have a 3 month old. The top statement applies to you as well. You don't have to conceive again this very moment. You don't have to plan out when to conceive any future children, let alone 4 more. Get yourself into a healthy place emotionally and physically and get your daughter into a better routine. TH…

My husband also despises makeup and I respect his wishes to not wear it. I'm interested in everyone's advice since I haven't have any success talking to my husband about this. I generally just use bb cream and chapstick. occasionally concealer or light eyeliner. I do keep my eye brows shaped and curl my lashes often.

Really depends on your personality and social life. I liked having a roommate or two since I tend to be more of a loner and living with people encouraged me to participate in more activities (hanging out with roommates and their friends, hearing their weekend plans and remembering that I should make my own plans, etc). Without them, I would tend to stay in by myself. If you're super outgoing, maybe your home is your one refuge.

In my case, we started out in the same place but I moved (internationally) for a job. Online gaming actually played a large part in our long distance period. I was not into video games before and I'm not now, but during that time it was a way for us to do an activity together and chat about something other than "so what did you do today". This was important to him because he hates just talking on the phone anyway. Like you said, best not to keep bringing up the issue of WHEN he'll visit, but sin…

This just reminded me that I used to do this for my (now) husband. We met while living in Asia, so he missed American food. He especially liked French toast sticks at the time. I've done a variety of things by now, from breakfast burritos to stirfry. There are a lot of sites devoted to freezer cooking, so it just depends on taste. If you can, freeze in portions so he won't have to cook an entire casserole for himself

I understand the jealousy. By the time I got engaged (age 29) all my college friends were married and most had at least one child. In addition, my sisters (4 and 6 years younger than me) had both gotten engaged less than two months before me. Not fun to hear them take turns complaining to me. One with "I've been with my guy longer and I'm older and I'm so jealous she got engaged first". And the other "I just know she's going to try to make her wedding before mine and upstage me". Meanwhile I was…

What are his reasons for wanting to be in the city? Shorter commute, better job, more educational /cultural opportunities? Those are pretty valid. Have you looked into the urban homesteading scene in your potential city? Gardening, keeping chickens, etc may still be possibilities

Are you me? People love to paint the picture that men are always hungry for sex and women should get used to that, so I entered marriage really eager to please. If it were up to me we'd be doing it 5+ days a week. My husband just has low libido. He's up for once or occasionally twice a week.

Plenty of women (myself included) have not had any serious boyfriends by age 20. It doesn't matter. You're not collecting Pokémon. You say you're conservative and religious. Presumably you have girlfriends with similar values. Check out any events hosted by their church's 'college and career group' or campus ministry. Meet their older brothers.

I was out having dinner with a new friend from church. He happened to stop in for dinner as well, also knew my friend from church, and I suggested we all eat together. At 26 I came to a place where I was content with myself and confident I could have a meaningful life even without a husband and children of my own. (I still wanted them, but decided not to wait around putting off all my other aspirations.) I moved to Asia for a job, thinking I was locking myself into spinsterhood. Mmm gotcha. It's one thing to have to interact with an ex you see regularly through work or your social circle. To seek out an ex to get advice about your current relationship... Yikes. Personally if he was a standup guy aside from this one incident I'd consider giving a second chance because people do weird things when they're under stress. Benefit of the doubt. No third chances though.

When we got married we joined all our accounts. I handle bills and he handles investments. We don't have a monthly budget because he doesn't feel it's necessary. We both spend responsibly and reasonably. For anything we want that's over $75 we run it by the other person. So far I've only been denied a robot vacuum. We are city mice and derive a lot of enjoyment from eating at all the diverse, fun restaurants around us. So that's always a treat, but never in a romantic surprise way (if that's wha…

Agreed. OP doesn't see how characteristics and choices can run on a spectrum. My husband is 6 years older. Does he count as my age, or much older? I wasn't looking for money, just a guy as stable in his career as I was in mine. Turns out my guy's field had much higher earning potential than mine and I can be a housewife. That doesn't mean I'll never go back to work. And if I do seek employment, I don't have to go back to climbing the ladder of my former field. We have so much choice.

Good! I was in similar shoes in my first year of marriage (just without the international move). I had spent pretty much my entire life with tight finances and my hobbies reflected that. I never baked anything I wasn't sure I could do perfectly. If I ever bought a book instead of borrowing it was secondhand and probably from the clearance rack. Talk to your husband about finances. He obviously wants to and is able to provide for you both. Is he concerned about keeping a tight budget? The guys around you sound young. Do they live on their own? Do they appreciate how much effort goes into making a home? Just because you want to be a housewife doesn't mean you have to start being one right now. You don't know how long you'll be looking for Mr Right. If you never got married, what would you want your life to be like? Start creating that life. Learn, explore, have a job you like. Be the woman the man you're looking for will be looking for.

Gotcha. Maybe my old karate school was outside the norm. They had a pre-k class that did basic stances and strikes mixed with games. Very discipline focused. I don't see any reason why you'd need to submit to your friends, so maybe we are thinking of different definitions or are from different cultures. But when people are telling you that you "know what you want and you're not afraid to make it known" that sounds like a loudmouth. There's a different between having opinions and always making sure everyone knows your opinions about every topic that comes up. Maybe you constantly push the group to do what you want to do. Can you expound on this? You are the one doing the shopping (and bill pay?) and you have your husband transfer money into your account every time you need to pay for household things? I don't consider that an allowance, just a functioning household. I've been a housewife for almost 2 years and I've definitely had cabin fever days. I think my cabin fever comes not from lack of things to do, but lack of human interaction. For me it helped to just get out of the house and seek little conversations with a neighbor, store clerk, mailman, cashier, etc. I go to the same coffee shop every Friday and befriended a barista. I view a proposal as a man's way to signal that he is willing and prepared for a lifetime of responsibility for that woman. He values the woman enough to invite her into the creation of one family unit. He is asking the woman to trust him with their future. That's life-changing. The woman has to decide whether she can submit to that man for their lifetime. Maybe I'd view things differently through different cultural lenses, but I tend to assume that a woman who proposes wants to be in control. …

I know your post was mostly about FIRE and commitment, but the things you said about your relationship were interesting. It sounds like you are not suggesting to your partner, "hey, let's have a party to celebrate our x years of commitment". It sounds like you want to PROPOSE - to officially ask him to commit to you (in some kind of ceremony with witnesses). I don't really think of that as being a woman's role, so I'm curious about your perspective.

The first time we hung out alone we had only known each other for about 2 weeks. We talked for 6 hours straight about our lives and our individual goals. I told him I wanted to be married and stay home to raise a family. He said he'd like a wife and a couple children and then went on about how a married couple is a team and both people have different but vital roles. It was another year and a half before he decided on me, but I knew from the start he was looking for a wife. That wasn't the first…

I was long distance Asia /US with my boyfriend (now husband) for 7 months, with only about a one month visit in the middle. By the time we went long distance we had already been dating over a year, had already met each other's families, and I already knew I wanted to marry him. So for us it worked because we already knew what the other person was like and we already had memories together. Prior to meeting my husband, I had started talking to someone long distance who I had only met in person dur…

We are also not gift givers. We just buy what we want and plan trips together. We also share a birthday and don't buy gifts for that either. I do feel pressured to buy gifts for his family though, since they get us something. It feels so stressful to find something they'd want, partly because I don't feel like I know them well, and partly because money isn't an issue for them

Talk to Husband. Make sure you understand what he expects. Are there any tasks he wants to keep doing? Who will be responsible for paying bills, walking dogs, car maintenance, etc? Housewife =/= homebound. Get out and interact with other humans during the day. A class, the gym, lunch with friends. Something fun and simulating, with the bonus that it will provide you something to talk about later. Cooking and cleaning aren't interesting discussion topics. Becoming a housewife should create a low-…

I'm not sure you're having an identity crisis exactly, but you seem to be realizing that personalities are complex. If you meet someone new and can accurately predict every aspect of their life, they've probably got a boring life. I wouldn't have guessed my favorite barista took this job after quitting her lucrative IT job. I didn't know my lawyer friend loves country music. Or that my sister in law gardens. I came here for the practical tips and advice about the submissive mentality I thought I had. That is, I already agreed with the theory, but I realized I wasn't living it out. I found rpw (and reddit) because I broke up with my boyfriend (more like "took a break") and I was searching online for some help. It's tough to make homeschooling a dealbreaker since (I assume) you don't have children and don't know whether you and your future children will all thrive in a homeschooling environment. From what I've heard, it can be done on nearly any budget and there are lots of resell /swap opportunities for curricula. Still, it's ok to talk about this as a goal. If you say "one day I hope to become a mother and stay home with my kids and try homeschooling" your date/boyfriend will either say "Interesting.…

By the time I got married (at 30) I had been working (part or full-time) for 15 years, had finished two undergraduate majors and a Master's in education. I had lived overseas and funded my own extensive travels. I assume you're in high school and that you don't earn any money. Starting a job now doesn't mean you are committing to it for life. I think the goal with nails (real or fake) is to look clean and neat. You don't want their length preventing you from daily life tasks (typing, cooking, kickboxing, etc). You also don't want that gross limbo with fakes where some are falling off or growing out. If you can handle the maintenance of fakes, fine.

He despises lipstick and dangley earrings, so I avoid them. I guess we have a simple (non) fashion look anyway, so it doesn't affect me much. Finances are a huge part of life. You need to be on the same page about it or it's going to cause you stress in your marriage. Having debt is not a huge issue in itself, but I think there are two things to be considered. What is the debt from? (Was he caught in a tough spot? Or was he making stupid purchases?) What is HIS plan for paying off the debt? A guy who is serious about his future will figure out a plan (with help from the internet, an advisor, Dave Ramsey, etc). He should be disciplined…

This doesn't seem super seductive, but it's one of my favorite tricks, used sparingly. It's especially useful when we're out somewhere boring and I'm ready to go haha. Doesn't matter if I'm facing him or standing next to him. I take his hand and discreetly brush it down my hip. Two seconds later we're out the door. What is this? My guy has carefully trained himself to detect panty lines, and when I pull his hand over my hip it instantly registers that I'm not wearing underwear.

You said everything I know is here and I feel like if I'm not 100% feeling great about our relationship then won't moving make it worse. What do you see wrong with your relationship? You mentioned *Not enough sex (I encourage you to check out the podcast called One Extraordinary Marriage.) *He doesn't take initiative often or in the ways you want him to and you switch into 'jerk mode' (Can you give an example?) Does he s…

What does he like about you? Or what are you bringing to the table? While this may not be the case, you're making your guy out to be rather malicious. There is a difference between needing space due to anger/frustration with someone and actively doing things to punish that person.

Agreed. Education doesn't necessarily tell you anything. Instead, I look for someone who can analyze complex ideas, pays attention to world news, and enjoys intellectual conversations. And i would say taking pride in his work is more important than just having a stable career. He's gotta be hardworking. I couldn't stand one of those guys who did the bare minimum and complained about his job all the time

Sounds like a fun childhood! Has your boyfriend ever seen you in a skirt/dress or with makeup or hair down? Has he mentioned a desire to see you with a different look? Does he like the way you treat him? I tried a really girly look with makeup and fancy hair and skirts when I was new to rpw and trying to improve my relationship... Gradually i figured out my bf prefers a very simple hair down, no makeup look and doesn't think skirts are better than pants. High heels though! Appearance things were…

Ease into it. Test out what works for you. As in, don't go break the bank on tonnes of clothes and makeup right off the bat. Don't throw away all your hair elastics. Don't go overboard or your SO may not recognize you. One of the basics to being feminine is how you carry yourself. No slouching, no shuffling. Here are 2 videos to start you off. A lot of young expats work as teachers, so you might find friends in the neighborhoods around international (and/or Christian) schools. Plus, they'd probably appreciate a friend from outside their work circle. You might just be able to search facebook for Americans in Xcity or Xcity Expats to find people and events. Homesickness will probably happen at some point. I got all my family and a couple close friends to install the messaging app popular in my country so i could easily text and send pho…

Thanks! The Cornish hens recipe looks so easy. I have always shied away from them because they seem so fancy. Will definitely try now :)

Boyfriend was here for the past month, and it was the first time I've gotten/had to consistently cook for him. We met living in Thailand, where eating out is generally cheaper/easier than cooking. He insists he's not a picky eater, but he hates cheese and anything 'creamy' like sour cream, cream of X soup. cream cheese, yogurt, etc. A lot of my favorite recipes involve one of those (mmm casseroles). Anyway, I planned well in advance and made a freezerful of meals, sides, and desserts. Everything…

This sounds tough. How long will you be long distance? (are you Thai? )

You say he has friends there and a community. Does this mean he has lived there before? How well does he speak the language? Is this a 'forever move' or just a short contract for work? What I'm getting at is, how invested do you need to be in this place? EDIT: Refreshed my page and saw you already addressed these. I think language school could be a solid option for you. Some schools teach culture and history too, which could give you interesting conversation material. What makes a SAHM less attr…

Agreed. I'm currently 2/3 through Surrendered Wife, and I am NOT loving it. She seems really big into nevers. Never correct him. Never offer advice. If he drops the ball on something, never pick it up. Never allow yourself to even know how your finances are. 'Money? Don't worry. Just hand him a list of your expenses for the month and have him give you cash. And don't be surprised when he starts showering you with gifts' Maybe this was geared toward rich, power-hungry women who are at the end of …

Absolutely understand. I've heard from many people -men and women alike- that it's dangerous for a woman to take too much time away from work because of various reasons and then they follow up with advice of how to remain marketable after x years outside the industry. Maybe I'll need to know all that. Hopefully not. I never made it widely known that I'd drop everything for the chance to have a family because I don't want my current career to be negatively impacted by something that isn't current…

I was 26 the first time I met women who were married, childless (Korean) homemakers. "Why would you NOT work? What do they do with all their time?" I thought. And then I realized they have time to exercise, meet with friends, clean, shop, and cook good food every day. Evenings and weekends get to be enjoyable time with hubs. It totally shifted my thinking. So thanks, Sunmi and Other Lady whose name is escaping me, for putting me on the path to a transformation.

Are people badmouthing him (he's not supportive, he's a selfish jerk type of thing)? Or mostly just surprised?

This was me! I moved to Asia at 26 and initially had a hard time finding good female friends. Keep looking! My friends came from my time volunteering and taking language classes. Classes are doubly good because even if you don't make great friends, you'll be learning language/cooking/art/whatever. And the good thing about expat life (where I was, anyway, ) was that every few months new people would move in.

Doesn't really bother me. I think of it in comparison to a marriage of convenience or an arrangement. With your best friend, you have inside jokes, shared interests, support, the intimacy of secrets, etc. So more like, "This is my husband. And we're best friends" as opposed to a transaction like, "This is my husband. I agreed to produce him an heir if he brought me to this country" or be his arm candy if he'd give me a certain standard of living. Or whatever.
