If you look at what's out there, the pictures are really convincing. Not something you'd spot easily. Like I said, they just look like you've had a filter applied. But yeah, I'm going to give it a try, cuz why not? I was just hoping to hear from people who have direct experience with this. I guess this sub is kind of dead?

If you want to bypass this problem of ego, there's actually a simple solution. Go out with some friends and come up with the most embarrassing ways to approach a girl that you can think of. Spend the entire night striking out hard. Your ego won't feel as threatened since you're consciously making a decision to embarrass yourself and you're doing it on your own terms.

Is that really the consensus? Girls are usually bored at work. Playful flirting is a welcome distraction. Obviously they don't like creepy flirters, but that's true in all situations.

Sarcasm is great because you can use it in so many situations. Just say, "Okaaayyy," in a mock defeated voice.

Do you remember which Tony Robbins program talks about state? I'd love to hear his perspective on it.

I think the most important book for a lot of the people in the subreddit would be the first one mentioned in the FAQ, David Burns's "Feeling Good." It's marketed as a book about depression, but it's so much more than that. The book spells out a mature philosophy towards life that everyone could benefit from. If you have a low self-esteem, misdirected anger, sadness, or any of a whole slew of other problems, this book offers you tools to improve all of these things. I'd say it's second only to "H…

I haven't read this one. I have read Mastery by George Leonard, though. In it, he correlates his experience with Aikido to any skill someone would like to master. Great content for such a quick read.

And I would add that the audio books are much better to listen to than they are to read. He has an infectiously motivational personality.

Neil Strauss is short and bald. He's also considered the best PUA of all-time. I think if you were truly confident, you wouldn't be dwelling on your appearance.

Are you currently sober? I don't know your situation exactly, but that seems like it's unnecessary. Recovering alcoholics often go through a phase where they finally begin discussing their problems in AA meetings. This feels great and they decide to carry this feeling into their personal life by being more open there as well. More often than not, they go overboard and tell people way too much about themselves. I'm not an alcoholic, but I went through a similar process involving something else.

I used to have a doctor who was in his 60s or 70s. He would tell long stories while looking me dead in the eye and never looking away. The effect was hypnotic and it established an instant rapport. I can only imagine what effect it had on women. This guy was special, though. I've never met anyone else with this particular skill.

It may not always seem like it, but deep down everyone respects a guy who's willing to put his ass on the line to take a chance. Whether your interaction is successful or not, just focus on the power you've gained by being courageous.

You know there's another weird phenomenon. They say your mate is usually your equal opposite. Sometimes we appear different, but really we're just on opposite sides of the same spectrum. For example, one person with a low self-esteem could be an underachiever. His mate would likely be an overachiever, also as a result of poor self-esteem.

It's been true throughout my life. When I look back on friends from grade school and high school, I'm actually amazed at the similarities I hadn't picked up on. Look at your upbringing and try to picture your friends' upbringings. You'll might be surprised.

It works both ways. You're attracted to what you are, but if you find ways to surround yourself with people I different characteristics, those characteristics will rub of on you. This is why parents are so concerned with their kids hanging out with the wrong crowd.

I'm working on this as well and I've made a lot of strides in the past year. I'll add the suggestion of filling yourself with positivity. Listen to so e of the more motivational gurus like David deangelo and Tony Robbins. Also get involved in positive activities like volunteer work. If you can see the good in the world you can see it in yourself and the concept of inferior begins to weaken.

Well, I haven't begun the program yet. I'm focusing on some other things at the moment, but I will do it at some point. But just having read through it, there seems to be a clear benefit. The rest of the book helped with bringing my problems into awareness. This, coupled with meditation helps me really pinpoint what's going on in my brain and allows me to accept what's happening instead of fighting it.

This is a big problem for me as well. Not just with women, but with any past imperfections. The feeling I get is abnormal though. The amount of pain I'll feel from simple faux pas and such is completely uncalled for. In my case, it has a lot to do with my childhood. I stumbled upon a book called "Healing the Shame that Binds You," which broke down my issues pretty well and recommends going through a 12-step program to treat the problem. I'm not sure if this is relevant to your situation, but tak…

In the book Flow, the author explains in detail how challenge brings happiness. One of the examples he gave was of an old Native American tribe. They would spend the majority of their day working to harvest the land and build their community. The work was difficult but they loved their lives. When they would near a point where the community had reached it's potential, the elders would call for the tribe to migrate to a new settlement and begin again. They did this for the sole reason of creating…

I'm not familiar with the app, but he has a book called "Rules of the Game" which is 30 days of "missions" to help improve your social skills. I just began reading it a couple weeks ago. So far it's a great book for anyone interested in something like this. It gives you progressively more challenging missions along with related advice and information. I'm only on Day 6 (you're not allowed to skip ahead until you complete the missions,) though so I can't tell you how the whole book is.

Think long-term. Wouldn't you be more confident if you had no fear of rejection? Well, how do you get over your fear of rejection? By getting rejected, of course. This way your confidence lies in your hands and not in others.

What made it easier for me was this: Instead of asking for her number and worrying about sounding insecure, I tell her to take my number. There's really no harm from her point of view so she'll almost always do it. Then tell her to shoot you a text so you have hers.

Here's a technique I learned from a vocal coach: Catch yourself saying the filler word when you're on the phone. After the call, repeat the sentence or sentences ten times while emphasizing the filler word each time. This brings it into your consciousness, making it easier to correct.

What you're describing is a problem found in dysfunctional families. In a normal family things operate like a mobile, people move and take on different roles in order to adapt to their needs. In a dysfunctional family, things are static. Your growth threatens your family's false sense of stability. David Deangelo also pointed out an interesting metaphor about self-improvement. When two crabs are put into a bucket, both will struggle to get out. If one of the crabs seems to finally be making prog…

David Deangelo's favorite pick-up line is "Hey." It immediately gets someone's attention and comes off as direct and confident if said properly. Opinions differ on what to say after, but I like to try to pick something from the present moment. Just put pressure on yourself to say anything. Your improv skills will improve with time.

I felt the same way about "The Power of Now" when I started it. I just forced myself through it because I've gotten so many recommendations. About 3/4s of the way through I had a change of heart. I realized that the book makes a hell of a lot of sense and I was taking the information for granted. But even if you don't think you can get into it, "A New Earth" has much more practical information than "The Power of Now." It gives valid insight into how your ego operates and how to control it. It's …

It may be the fact that you met the girls online. One of the most surprising things you'll notice when you start learning game is that you get more shit from the less attractive girls. Hot girls are used to the dating process and approach it tactfully and with a better attitude. Less attractive girls may have self-esteem issues and be more defensive. They may also enjoy the power associated with rejecting someone. I'm generalizing of course. But David Deangelo is a big fan of online dating. He s…

Working out is a great boost to self-esteem, but it's less about becoming huge and more about dedicating time to yourself and being healthy. Don't do it to overcompensate for something. There is no single cure-all. Work on being a well-rounded person.
