Penny Arcade's comic about rapeI agree that a lot of the back and forth has more to do with the reaction to the initial criticism than the rape reference itself. I actually thought the orignal comic with the rape reference was kind of funny for the reasons you mentioned in the first paragraph. They probably were irritated about all the criticism, and that's understandable, but when I read their response comic Breaking It Down, my only thought was "This comic isn't funny, they're just kind of being flippant assholes now" I thi… | /r/MensRights | 05/02/11 03:46 AM
Call to ActionOh, I see. We have men help on the phone lines - we just always have a female volunteer as a backup in case whoever calls isn't comfortable talking to a man, they almost never have to switch over to the backup, but we have one there just in case. It would be great to have male backups for all female phone line volunteers - but we just don't have enough male volunteers. There's a rape crisis center in another part of the state that's called the Women's Crisis Center - though they say they provide… | /r/MensRights | 05/02/11 01:56 AM
Call to ActionNo co-opting intended. Most of my time contributing to men's rights causes (at least as I perceive them) has been spent through the rape crisis center - dispelling myths that men can't be raped, that all men are rapists, etc, comforting male survivors (if they feel comfortable speaking to a female about their assault, of course), and making sure my community knows that we aren't just an organization for women. That probably isn't much by most standards, and I realize that. I am certainly open to… | /r/MensRights | 05/02/11 01:34 AM
Call to ActionNo condescension intended, i'm sorry if it reads that way. I was just speaking out of the need for male volunteers I know my organization experiences and thought it might be a good fit for some of the men's rights activists who frequent this subreddit and maybe hadn't considered it an option before. Perhaps I was out of step. | /r/MensRights | 04/02/11 06:12 PM
Call to ActionThat's awful. Is there nowhere there for men to go? I can only speak for the organization I work with and we serve both male and female clients and rely on the support of men and women in the community. | /r/MensRights | 04/02/11 07:07 AM
Does this make me a troll?Feminist can be kind of a misnomer. A true feminist should care about gender equality and would therefore want to read articles about gender issues facing men. After all, we're all in this thing together. Then again, trolling is often more about intent than content - are you trying to be antagonistic or raise awareness about gender issues? I think a little more of the latter and less of the former could help all of us quite a bit. | /r/MensRights | 04/02/11 02:15 AM
