We can argue moral appropriateness, but the court is concerned with legal definitions. They chose to litigate it as a strict liability offense because they did not want to take any factors into consideration besides what would help their case. I am not going to restrict the topic under the flawed concept that just because something is worth having means it is worth taxing for.
