Whenever I hear “they were abusing each other” alarm bells start to go off for me. Mutual abuse is actually fairly rare. Often one partner is acting out of reactive abuse. “Reactive abuse occurs when the victim reacts to the abuse they are experiencing. The victim may scream, toss out insults, or even lash out physically at the abuser. The abuser then retaliates by telling the victim that they are, in fact, the abuser.” Abusers count on this behavior as a way to shift blame for the abuse onto th…

This was really triggering. I was in a relationship like this for 15 years. I remember sometimes I would break down crying and would scream back, which would only get me accused of being the abuser. I felt so guilty and terrible about it that I would accept the blame and promise to do better. I didn’t know about reactive abuse at the time. No one has yelled at me in 8 yrs and it’s so peaceful & quiet now. Someone here (thanks stranger!) recommended the book “The Verbally Abusive Relationship” by…

This is a great post. I cried walking home after my very last date on OLD before I quit entirely after 7 years of non-stop use. It wasn’t even one of my most horrific dates, just a disrespectful one where he tried to get me to pay for both of us “and he’ll pay next time” - aka never. I refused & payed my portion of the tab to the waiter on my way out. I started having panic attacks & realized that I was having a PTSD response to 7 solid years of paper-cut disrespect, manipulation, lies, and coer…

“It’s always about you. When is it EVER going to be about ME and what I need?” “You are always too critical. YOU have a problem.” “It will get done, you just need to stop nagging me/wait longer/be patient/be less picky” “What about all of the things I do? You never appreciate anything I do.” Ah yes, this is taking me back to the Gaslighting Years.

Yep! I actually use this as a question to weed out LVM. “Have you ever had a crush on a man or found a man sexually attractive?” If they freak out about the question, or say anything homophobic, or refuse to answer, boy bye 👋🏻.

There are quite a few helpful books listed in the Handbook under "spotting red flags". I think "The Gift of Fear" and "The Like Switch" are my favorites. That last book is actually on HOW to manipulate others into liking you, but you could use it to spot someone trying those techniques on you. I'm barfing in my mouth as I write this, but you could also try to read "The Game" and watch some pick-up-artist videos on YouTube (try search terms like "How to get women to sleep with you"), so that you …

“The things that you say about YOUR boundaries and YOUR standards hurt my ego because I fall outside of them. Therefore you must change your standards to include me and my fragile scrote ego, otherwise you are [ugly/frigid/a feminazi/a spinster]”. Never mind that scrotes talk all the time about their standards for how women must look & behave. You don’t see us swiping right to tell them how to change so that we can soothe our egos.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
