The Angel of Darkness by Caleb Carr. A sequel to The Alienist.
The story is about a woman that kills children and it deals with all the lies that were believed at the the turn of the 20th century about women being the “moral” sex and the idea of natural law (that women are natural mothers and less violent). It is not only a commentary about that time period, but a commentary about our own and the lies we tell about women that have been part of the fabric of our country since the beginning.
It is a subversive bit of fiction.
