Ah, the time of graduation for people and gatherings to celebrate the release of students into the jungle of life where they will have their idealism eaten.
I’m at a graduation party and a youngish relative is talking about her recent run in with the police.
She makes the following statement while explaining something foolish that she did: “I just have to trust the officer.”
“Why?” I ask
“Because I’ve never met him, I have to believe he was telling me the truth.”
“Let me ask you something. If he was not wearing the blue uniform, and you had just met him, would you ‘just trust him’?”
She squirms. “No.”
“Then why do you trust him because he’s wearing a certain outfit?”
“I don’t know.”
