An article sent by one of my gentle readers, Tarl, got me thinking about social obligations.

The article itself is a “nice” guy asking why girls chase the bad boys and the ensuing shaming language that follows that he is just as bad and manipulative as the bad boys, just not as fun.

But the most important thing is the woman proclaiming that they “don’t owe him anything.”

This attitude is pervasive in society.

And I will admit right now that I have embraced it.  If no one and society owes me nothing, than there is no covenant between us.  No social contract at all.

First all human behavior, every single bit of it that involves another human being has manipulation in it.

To state that nice guys are manipulative is like stating the sky is blue.  So fucking what?

If you are interacting you are manipulating, even on such a small level as friendliness, we are promoting or attempting to promote friendship.

Indeed a society cannot survive with out social obligations.

At the very fundamental level people work to survive, but they do more than work for several reasons, the obvious one is status (which requires other members of the society to recognize it) but a fundamental reason people work hard at their jobs (or a fundamental one for why they don’t) is that people feel a sense of social obligation.

They may want to get promoted, they might want to get more money, they might do it because they like their boss (which is a form of social obligation) and, something that seems to be fading quickly, they take pride in their work.  They want simply to do a good job, even if people don’t realize they have done a good job.

You take away social obligation and all that is left is money and status fighting.  No amount of money is every enough, so a person begins to think they aren’t paid enough.

And once that realization sets in, they start working less hard and the quality of their work suffers.  I have notice the craftsmanship of things I am purchasing has gone down.

So in fact all those bitches that think they don’t owe those nice guys anything, are wrong.

You cannot expect men to white knight, when you “owe” them nothing.  I knew a woman that whenever she would have trouble with something, she would find some men and ask them for help.  And then she would stand their looking soulful waiting for them to crack if they didn’t assist her readily and eventually they would.

I look forward to when men see that and are as unmoved by that manipulation as they are by watching the wind push the leaves out of a tree.

They owe her nothing.
