Not for the usual reasons either.

I am out and about with a bunch of people.

One of the guys says he really wants a kid.  Really wants one, but doesn’t want to get married.

“Don’t knock some chick up, get a surrogate.” I say.

“Won’t that cost about $20,000?”

“Yeah, but the kid’s yours. Otherwise you’ll be paying a lot more in child support.”

A girl we’re with looks at me and pipes up, “Why not just date a single mom?”

I look at her, “The kid isn’t his.”

“Why’s that so important to guys?  A kid’s a kid.”

“No it isn’t.”  The other guy is nodding.

“There are guys that like kids that aren’t theirs.  Like X, he likes kids.  He loves them.” (X is a sad beta).

“X likes other people’s kids because he doesn’t think he’ll ever have his own.  He’s projecting his need for a child on to other people’s kids.”

“You are such a Neanderthal.”

“How so?”

Making a big deal out of genes.  We should love all kids.”

“Should doesn’t mean shit.  I may be a Neanderthal but then most men are and without their own kids, most men won’t give a fuck what happens to the world.”

She looks at me trying to determine if I’m joking.

I turn away.
