For the last month or so, I have been noticing a lot of ads and reminders online for some program that sends “single moms” back to school. They are all touted as being promoted by Obama, who “wants single mothers to go back to school.” I saw one that suggested at the very end that fathers can apply as well, but when we see the results of other programs created for the benefit of women, the net effect on men is generally negative. My bet is that these scholarships are available only for low-income, custodial single parents, of which some 90% or more are women.

Under Obama’s new program, thousands of dollars will be made available to single moms. It is being marketed as a no-strings-attached payout for women without husbands, which is sure to give lots of young and foolish women ideas about ditching their husbands, who may be less than enthusiastic about buying that new $200 pair of shoes their wives have been pining for. I can just hear their inner dialog: “Well, if he won’t buy them, then I’ll just get a divorce and Obama will buy them for me!” Here’s a quote that illustrates the candyland mentality behind this new program:

The recession has made the situation even worse for women. However President Obama knows this, which is the reason he has decided to set up programs which give money to women who want to go back into education. Any women that wants to go back to school can get up to $10,000 absolutely free. There are grants from the government and even scholarships from private companies. These companies can pay for your tuition fees and guarantee you a job once you have completed your degree. All you need to do is apply for this free money.

You can spend this money on anything you like. In fact every woman who has been thinking of going back to school should apply for as many scholarship and grant programs as they can find.

Is it really any wonder why there are more women than men graduating from college? It is because women get incentives and support, and men do not. If anyone needs retraining and education during this recession, it is men – non-custodial fathers in particular – who have been laid off and rendered unemployed in far greater numbers than single mothers. These men won’t just have a hard time buying schoolbooks or affording daycare — given the lack of social support for men they will have a hard time feeding themselves and staying out of jail if they fall behind on child support.

The most tragic consequence of these programs will simply be more broken families. As women are offered more and more incentives to raise children outside of marriage, more and more of them will leave their husbands on flimsy pretexts, or for no reason at all. Obama can shore up his support amongst women very easily by offering them handouts from time to time, but all he’s doing is completing the evisceration of the American family.
