In Issaquah Washington, a suburb of Seattle at the base of the Cascade foothills, a couple of men have been arrested in the severe beating of a man who is accused of raping the wife of one of the arrested men.

So far, the up-to-date police version of the story is that:

  • Woman leaves bar and heads to friend’s house
  • Accused rapist, who knows woman and people at house, goes back to house
  • Accused rapist allegedly has sex with woman
  • Woman calls friend and tells her about it
  • Someone tells husband and his friend
  • Husband and friend go back to the house where alleged rape occurred
  • Alleged rapist is sleeping on the couch
  • Husband and friend arm themselves with a brick and mallet
  • Man wakes up, husband and friend beat him unconscious
  • Police are called and rape accusation is made
  • Police arrive, find accused rapist bloody and unconscious, and arrest husband and friend
  • Police do not advise woman to seek medical treatment and rape test

Now, nobody knows exactly what happened, but the events look pretty fishy to me. Would a rapist simply go to sleep after a rape? Would he rape the wife of a man he knew to be within walking distance – and a man he in fact knew personally – and then go to sleep in a place where he knew the husband would return?

This is either a case of an incredibly stupid rapist or a woman who made up a story. Or, perhaps, the guy was set up, but I kind of doubt that given the improvised weapons.

In any event, the accused rapist is in a coma, and obviously can’t answer any questions.

Personally, I’ve got no pity for the guy even if the wife is lying about rape and just had consensual sex with him, but it isn’t even clear that he had sex with the woman at all. If he did, and it was consensual, well, that’s what you ought to expect for sleeping with your buddy’s wife. Screwing married women should properly be a dangerous thing to do, and has only become a safe option because women have demanded that their “right” to adultery is protected by law.

If it turns out she was lying, the woman should be the one charged with first degree assault — not her husband and his friend. I’ll be interested to see where this one goes. It certainly smells rotten.
