Seattle Cartoonist Kicks Dads in the Shorts Before Father’s Day

It’s become something of a tradition to bash men on Father’s Day. Police departments stage raids on “deadbeat dads,” hauling impoverished men off to jail to humiliate them and guarantee that they won’t have any contact with their children, our President gives us speeches about how we men are dropping the ball, and editorials are penned about the crisis of fatherhood that place all the blame on – you guessed it – fathers.

So I’m not surprised to see a cruel cartoon poking fun at unemployed men, but I do wonder if it will ever end. It can be pretty demoralizing to be exposed to this right before a day that’s supposed to celebrate the special, human relationship between fathers and their children.

The truth is that it is very hard on men to be unemployed, broke and struggling, and making them the butt of jokes before Father’s Day is in pretty bad taste.

But that’s par for the course here in the Anglosphere.
