So I couldn’t sleep one night and randomly decided to come up with a reading list of anti-male books to see how many were actually out there. In fairness, I found a few books that do the opposite, but there are very few and the most obvious one, Dick Masterson’s Men Are Better Than Women, is hard to take seriously. In his top ten list of why men are better than women, number 7 is men live less than women, number 6 is men write illegibly and number 3 is boys destroy things… I’m sure exposure to such hatred will ruin the self esteem of countless, impressionable young girls.

Now I guess there are a few book titles that may be considered sexist toward women, such as How Women Manipulate or That Bitch: Protect Yourself from Women with Malicious Intent. But even those are pushing it. Now I have no problem with poking fun at each other, or books with titles such as Women are Crazy, Men are Stupid and Why Men Don’t Listen and Women Can’t Read Maps. We shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously and I think it’s fine if men and women make a few sexist jokes from time to time. It takes the edge off. But the discrepancy and double standard here is simply ridiculous. Just look at the list one sleepless night and Amazon.com can put together:

Indeed, that’s not the whole of it. I could discuss the innocuously titled Intercourse by Andrea Dworkin, which at the least, implies that all sex is rape. Or in her brilliant, nonsensical way of putting it:

“There is never a real privacy of the body that can coexist with intercourse: with being entered. The vagina itself is muscled and the muscles have to be pushed apart. The thrusting is persistent invasion. She is opened up, split down the center. She is occupied–physically, internally, in her privacy.”

Uhhhh, OK. Moving on there’s Frances Swiney’s Woman and Natural Law which asserts that men were nothing more than a genetic mistake. Of course, there’s also the whole body of Catherine Mckinnon’s work. Or how about Susan Brownmiller’s Against Our Will which states that “[Rape] is nothing more or less than a conscious process of intimidation by which ALL men keep all women in a state of fear” (emphasis mine). I was under the impression that I thought rape was abhorrent. I was under the naïve assumption that most men detest the idea of their wives, girlfriends, mothers, daughters, sisters and friends being raped. I believed it would be nice to do away with the danger of false allegations. I thought it would be easier to approach women and build trust if rape simply didn’t exist. But nope, Susan has enlightened me. Rape, even though it’s a crime I would never consider committing, is a weapon I personally use to intimidate and control ALL women.

Given all this nonsense, the title to David Samson’s book may sum up the times better than anything I could write: Men Who Hate Themselves and the Women Who Agree With Them.
