Apparently feeling that this was a matter of serious national significance, Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota asked whether Elena Kagan preferred vampires or werewolves, in reference to the rivalry between Edward and Jacob (vampire and werewolf respectively) for the affections of Bella in the Twilight series. Kagan responded that she hasn’t seen the film, so she couldn’t make up her mind at this point.
I suppose one could say that discussions about sports teams are equally as inane, but it still seems surreal to see that discussions of teen fantasy books are brought into confirmation hearings for what is supposed to be one of the most dignified offices of the United States. Sometimes, I wonder whether these institutions will devolve into something resembling a daytime talk show. They certainly seem to be headed in that direction.
