I’ve noticed over time that The Spearhead has a lot of international readers, and they aren’t all from Anglophone countries. The leading non-Anglo countries in terms of viewers are Germany, Finland and Brazil. We’ve had thousands of site visitors from each of those countries in just the last month, and that prompted me to think about offering some content in languages other than English.
I’ve always enjoyed language in its many varieties, and have learned a couple foreign languages over the years, but I’m not a native speaker in anything other than English, although I came pretty close with French as a boy many years ago, when I lived in Nantes for some time. Unfortunately, here in Seattle I haven’t had much opportunity for practice, so my French is nothing like it used to be.
However, I came to appreciate the importance of languages other than English from an early age, so I like the idea of breaking the language barrier and exchanging ideas with people around the world.
So, with that in mind, I recently set about learning how to set up WordPress in different languages on networked sites, and we are putting the finishing touches on a Spanish language site, hosted by The Spearhead, right now. Spanish, being the second most spoken language of North America, seemed like the logical first step, but I’d be happy to expand to include more. Perhaps German would be a good second step, as we have quite a few German readers and there are so many people in Germany, but it depends on finding someone who is not only interested, but available as well. Whatever the case, I’ve deciphered the art of language customization on the network, and can easily host blogs for our non-Anglo supporters in their native languages.
Technology can really be a great tool, and it’s an advantage we have over our rivals. International feminism is institutionalized, largely built on top of the old Marxist campus network. This has its advantages (for the professors at least), but we have the potential to move far more quickly and disseminate information with an efficiency they could never hope to match. I hope this is a step toward sharing international news of interest to men, and warning men in different countries about laws and political moves designed to curtail their freedom and heap burdens on their shoulders.
One advantage we have here in the US is that we really do have freedom of the press, whereas some other countries do not. This means that if we host a blog for a guy from some European country that does not have the same guarantees, they will be perfectly free to publish politically incorrect material on the site. Furthermore, they can’t be easily tracked without access to my server, so if they want to maintain anonymity they are protected, because an attempt to curtail speech on The Spearhead would be a violation of the US Constitution, and the site operates on American soil. Of course, there are limits (e.g. fraud, kiddie porn and credible threats), but freedom of political speech is guaranteed.
